Police occupy Harbour City to hinder Tsim Sha Tsui "sing with you"
Mother stops son from leaving home to prevent being arrested

On May 10, "Sing with You" event was initiated in multiple districts. Large group of riot police were deployed, stopping and searching citizens in that morning.

Mrs. Cheng, who was eating ice cream next to the police's corden line and refused to be filmed, said that she took advantage of Mother's Day to go out with her husband and celebrate, but found the police standing by everywhere in the mall, preventing her and other citizens from shopping.

Her eyes got red when saying that she was dissatisfied with the police's use of the gathering ban as an excuse to target and arrest teenagers. She admitted that she felt heartache as a mother and told his teenage son to stay at home to avoid being arrested.

Legislative Councilor Roy Kwong: Never get numbed by Injustice

On Mother's Day, police arrested at least 230 people in Hong Kong. Among them was Roy Kwong Chun-yu, a pro-democracy legislator, who was violently pushed onto the ground with the riot police's knee pressing against his head.

Police later claimed that Kwong had thrown a water bottle in the direction of an officer and was arrested for "public misconduct". Kwong was admitted to the hospital.

Kwong reiterated that he was monitoring police operations on the frontline and buffered the conflict between the police and the public. In a video filmed by Undergrad from HKU Student Union, Kwong in white was holding a loud speaker with his two hands, making it quite impossible to throw a water bottle.

Although Kwong was released unconditionally on May 11, the lawmaker reminded Hongkongers not to get numbed by injustice: "we have our rights to the street".

Police disperse courtroom spectators on "gathering ban" grounds
Unable to send son off, mother in tears

(4 May) This afternoon, Tuen Mun Magistrates' Court held a hearing on a case related to the Anti-Extradition Movement. Many attended to show support. While awaiting the send-off, at least 6 police vehicles arrived on scene. Dozens of police officers got out and dispersed the supporters on the grounds of "gathering ban".

Today was Ms Leung's first time going to a hearing. She recalled that at around 3:30 pm when she and other supporters were waiting for the send-off by the court building's exit, the police vehicles had already arrived. Towards 4:30 pm, more police vehicles arrived and dozens of police officers alighted. They dispersed the people present, indicating that they had "a common purpose" and exclaimed, "You have only one chance. Are you going to leave?" A cordon was immediately set up by the door of the prisoner transport vehicle. Searches were conducted on youngsters. She stated that police officers were stationed on at least three sides of the court building and that they dispersed those present. Plainclothes officers also argued with them.

Ms Leung added that a detainee's mother - who was there to send her son off - was "pushed off the cordoned area and cried her heart out". Ms Leung reproached, "It is ridiculous. Even if they forbid us, they should still permit family members. Seeing his mother [in that state] was heartbreaking!" Tears fell as she spoke. Ms Leung was also driven away by the police left unable to support the detainees as intended. "I wonder if (the prisoner transport vehicle) has left yet."

Tsang Kam-wing, Sam Cheung Ho-sum and other Tuen Mun district councillors also showed up to monitor the situation. Cheung condemned the police' excuse of the gathering ban to disperse citizens and use warning flags at all. On the obstruction of the send-off, he exclaimed, "It's almost Mother's Day and they won't even let mothers see their sons!"

Carrie Lam panicked over her mother day’s gift, thinking that might be a bomb parcel. She seems to have no idea how many mothers have lost their children forever.

Not only a mother of 7-year old, but also a frontliner

(10 May) Because of work in the past, I knew "D", who is the mother of a 7-year old.

"D" was a "peaceful" protester in the beginning. Until the beginning of July last year, she and her son was going back home from dinner, police tactical unit (PTU) rushed toward them. Her son said he wanted to stay and help the front line protesters. He said, "I am not scared, mum."

"D" couldn't help but cry at that moment and thought, "even a kid knows right from wrong; what should an adult wait for?"

Then came the 21 July and "D" felt she couldn't take it anymore. She became a frontline” protester. What happened on the 31 of Aug and 1 Oct was still vivid in her mind. "For the first time, I didn't know what I could do. I only know everyone can contribute something. I have been almost all different positions, such as frontline, supporter, parents, scout, FA, etc. As long as you are willing to take one more step."

She went out alone every time. I asked how her son responded. She said her son didn't let her go once for the siege of PolyU. "When I was in PolyU, I was afraid that I couldn't go home. He texted me via WhatsApp to ask me about the condition when I went out every time. He even kept some food for me to eat later." Her kid still felt worried even he knew why her mother went out. He always watched live when his mother was out.

As a mother, how could she not fear to be arrested or hurt? What to do if leaving the kid alone? "I have planned just in case something happens. I have a friend to help and look after my kid." I couldn't imagine how a mother could sacrifice and be determined. I felt heart-breaking to hear her story and respect the mother and the son deeply.

"I come out and protect the future for my son. If you have kids and you can't see their future, don't let yourself be regret one day that you haven't done anything. "she said firmly.

Our sister is not only a frontliner but also a mother. Even with a heavy burden, it doesn't mean to flinch. Because she can't lose her beloved son, she protests him regardless of personal safety

Wish all mother teammates be safe in this "Mother's Day". They come out to be the front line because they don't want the next generation to live under a dictatorship. Women and mothers are not soft and weak anymore in this movement. Because of love, they are determined to fight.

Postscript 5.10: The most terrifying Mother’s Day

(11 May)The evening of Mother's Day was supposed to be filled with a warm and festive atmosphere, but last night the streets of Mong Kok were filled with anxiety. Before nightfall, the Hong Kong police had deployed large numbers of officers in Mong Kok. After dark, the riot police deliberately pushed journalists to the ground and pepper sprayed them. Some journalists were even beaten up, resulting in injuries. The most shocking scene was when an Emergency Unit (EU) car was driven at high speed from Nathan Road turning into Shantung Street, trying to crash through the roadblocks on Shantung Street towards journalists, citizens and volunteer first aiders on the road and pavement at the time, but the police paid no attention to the safety of those present.

Several PTU coasters followed the EU car and rushed forward at high speed on Shantung Street. At that moment, I was crossing the road while live streaming, and I had to jump back onto the pavement immediately. I was also extremely worried that others would be run over by the police cars. Fortunately, everyone got away in time.

The police were performing their duties. Were the journalists not doing their jobs as well? Why do you have to vent your anger on journalists working on the scene all the time? It's the media's job to speak the truth, and there should be mutual respect. But today's Hong Kong police can ignore the lives of those on the scene, what makes them think that they could teach others “respect”?

On #MothersDay, Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Activists, remanded or exiled, Pay Homage to Their Mothers

Usually on Mother’s Day, many families would go out and celebrate. However, some are less fortunate this year in Hong Kong.

On May 9, 2021, exiled former #Demosisto leader #NathanLaw posted a photo with his mother on Facebook. He said this festival reminds him of the many pro-democracy protestors who became separated from their families. “Only until justice is done can family warmth return.”

Nathan Law recalled, “no matter how busy I am, on Mother's Day, I can always let go of my work and sit before a dinner table with my family.”

He admitted he saw festivals as an excuse to step away from work, but this year he thought of all the protestors who were forced into leaving their own families due to political oppression.

“For everyone who is remanded, imprisoned, or exiled, there is always a mother at home waiting for their return, waiting for days, for months, for years.”

He hoped there can be a new meaning for Mother’s Day. “Please remember those behind bars and oceans apart.”

The facebook page of democrat #TakchiTam, who is remanded on National Security charges, also posted a video that was recorded earlier of him singing the song “Mother, I did no wrong.”

In the video, he said the festival also reminded him of all the young men and women exiled or imprisoned due to the movement. However, he believed when people are united in their pursuit of justice and truth, a new family will be forged.

[Editor's note: “Mother, I have done no wrong” is a song written in remembrance of the 1989 June Fourth Massacre in Beijing. The title is a reference to a famous banner raised by the pro-democracy students who went on hunger strike in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

The lyrics sing:

“We want no one to define right or wrong.

We want no one to convict others at will."]
