Detained HK Activist #OwenChow: Good Works Are Always Born in the Worst of Times
On June 22, 2021, Owen Chow, a 24-year-old pro-democracy activist, was finally granted bail after being detained for months.
Chow was among the 47 pro-democracy figures who were arrested by the police for participating in the Primary Election of the pro-democracy camp in 2020. They were charged with subverting the state under the National Security Law.
Among the 47 people detained, Chow is only the 12th person who has been granted bail; however, he was barred by the High Court from making any speeches or take part in any action that could be seen as "endangering national security". He cannot participate in any elections or contact foreign officials.
In addition, Chow has to surrender all his travel documents and not to leave Hong Kong. He has to report to the police every evening and observe an overnight curfew.
Leaving the detention center for the moment, Chow said to the journalists, "Good works are always born in the worst of times."

HK Authorities Force Taiwan's representatives in Hong Kong to sign “One China Commitment”
The Mainland Affairs Council (#MAC) of Taiwan pointed out that Hong Kong Government requested the Taiwanese staff of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office to sign the “One China Commitment”.
The Taiwanese staff refused, so their visas could not be renewed. 7 staff members had to leave Hong Kong and returned to Taiwan on Jun 20, 2021.
The President of MAC in Taiwan Chiu Tai-san criticized that the “One China Commitment” was a political barrier set up by Hong Kong Government, and it violates the Taiwan-HK agreement made in 2011 “with the aim to belittle the National status of my country, and forced the staff members to bow their heads to the Beijing authorities”.
Taiwan insists on rejecting it. Chiu also stated that #CCP is undoubtedly the “shadow fighter” behind all these operations, by attempting to take advantage of the Taiwan office in Hong Kong as a tool for political conspiracy against Taiwan. Once again, it proves Hong Kong’s “One Country Two Systems” becomes only an empty title.
As a consequent, countries that have signed contracts and negotiated with Hong Kong government "shall put a question mark on the autonomy and integrity of this authority”.

China fails to meet promises on missing Xinjiang children
Over the past two years, the Chinese authorities have repeatedly promised to help trace any children reported to be missing in Xinjiang, to prove that they haven't been forcibly separated from their parents. Those promises have not been met, reports John Sudworth.
The first time China made a public promise to help find Kalbinur Tursan's children was in 2019.
"If you have people who have lost their children, you give me the names," China's then-ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaoming, told the BBC in a live television interview in July that year.

A worsening diplomatic and trade dispute has choked off exports of Australian wine to China, including the 350,000 liters of premium Shiraz and other varietals that Kilikanoon Wines Pty. Ltd. had been shipping to the country each year. China, angered by Australia’s call last year for an international investigation into the origins of the pandemic, has imposed tariffs and restrictions on wine and other commodities such as barley, coal and even lobster.

When newspaper becomes luxury
As I hold a copy of the paper, I think of the young people who just joined this family, their conviction of the truth, their conviction of the responsibility borne upon their shoulders. Yet in an instant, they were relieved of their duties. Not reasoned regarding their performance, but being told that “you are still young, there are certain troubles you shouldn’t get involved in”. When one's way to protect oneself is to run away, the valuable lesson in life would be to boldly accept one’s own weaknesses. If you manage to stay positive, then I’m happy for you; but at least for today, allow me to have a brief moment of despair.
May we meet again
I know full well that life must go on, so I made two wishes.
I could hardly expect people in a decade from now to understand the feelings of waiting for the publication of a newspaper overnight until daybreak, though I do hope that they would know that such a thing happened. I could also hardly expect karma after a decade to be repaid, but if the words “until we meet again” are written in this last newspaper, I hope that I could at least live until then to witness that day. Some people tell me not to romanticize the whole thing - I guess you could call me an old romantic.
Elements of youth
To take away a newspaper, and to declare some truth to be more "true" than others; some opinions to be more "neutral" than others; some lies to be more trustworthy than the truth. These have all become a part of the youth of this generation - a dash of depression in the dark corner of a soul and a piercing desire for justice in the back of the eyeballs. One can choose to tolerate pain, to choose joy over sorrow, or to risk over certain danger, but once all has come to an end, what follows is the struggle between memories and forgetting.

Human Rights Organisation's Report Shows Hong Kong Ranked 4th Last
The Human Rights Measurement Initiative (#HRMI), an international organisation based in #NewZealand, published the 2022 Human Rights Report on June 21, assessing the civil and political rights in 30 districts.
The overall score of Hong Kong's "Empowerment" (which relates to general freedoms for citizens) slightly increased from 2021. Yet, it is still fourth last, while mainland China remains at the bottom of the ranking.
Meanwhile, the Special Representative of the Human Rights Department under China's Foreign Affairs Ministry, Yang Xiaoguang, attended the United Nations Human Rights Council on Wednesday (Jun 21), strongly criticising the UK, Australia and other countries and "anti-China organisations" for slandering China and repeating lies on the issues in #HongKong, #Xinjiang and #Tibet. He even claimed the development of human rights in Xinjiang and Tibet is "in the best period in history".
