Pompeo demands China to Unconditionally Release of 12 pro-democracy HK activists: They deserve a hero’s welcome abroad
US Secretary of State #MikePompeo called for the immediate release of 10 Hong Kong activists who were sentenced to between seven months and three years in jail by a Chinese court.
The ten Hongkongers were arrested by the Chinese authorities arrested at sea as they reportedly fled the city and tried to reach Taiwan by speedboat in August 2020.
On December 30, 3020, the Chinese court in Shenzhen sentenced eight of the Hongkongers to seven months in jail, one to two years and one to three years. Two underage Hongkongers were handed over to Hong Kong police, since they have been detained in China in August 2020.
Pompeo said, "The ‘Hong Kong 12’ who tried to flee this tyranny deserved a hero’s welcome abroad, not capture, a secret trial and prison sentences."
The United States strongly condemns the Shenzhen court’s actions and calls for the 10 members of the group who were sentenced to jail terms to be immediately and unconditionally released.”
“The CCP’s persecution of the Hong Kong 12 – two of whom were juveniles at the time of their arrest – exposes once again Beijing’s brutality, blatant disregard for the international treaties it has signed, and its disdain for the rights of the Hong Kong people,” Pompeo added.
Pompeo further expressed in the statement, " A regime that prevents its own people from leaving can lay no claim to greatness or global leadership. It is simply a fragile dictatorship, afraid of its own people."

Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy activist #JimmyLai has been sent back to jail after the territory’s top court rescinded his bail on new year's eve. The decision came just days after People’s Daily, the Chinese Communist party mouthpiece, lambasted the decision to grant bail and raised the spectre of his case being transferred to China.
Benedict Rogers, founder of Hong Kong Watch, a UK-based campaign group, condemned the court’s decision. “Judicial independence trampled on, the rule of law further undermined, and yet another outrageous assault on #HongKongers,” he wrote on Twitter.
Another member of Hong Kong Watch, Luke de Pulford also criticised, "In a totalitarian state, if justice isn't the justice you expected, just try again."
Senior fellow at the University of Nottingham Asia Research Institute Andreas Fulda condemned the Hong Kong Government's approach as "rule by law" rather than the rule of law and called for immediate release of Jimmy Lai.
Member of the Finnish Green Part, Eero Kivistö, rallied a demonstration at the the Chinese Embassy in Finland urging for release of Jimmy Lai and the 12 youth being arrested for attempting to flee the city.
Member of the International Commission on Religious Freedom, part of the Federal Government of the United States, Johnnie Moore pointed out that Jimmy Lai’s case showed further distortion of Hong Kong’s judiciary system.

Local Musicians Encourage Hongkongers to Hang On
The Hong Kong Commercial Radio held the annual Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation on the first day of 2021 in the Kowloon Bay International Trade and Exhibition Centre.
Under the menace of the coronavirus pandemic, no audience was admitted to the venue, and the ceremony was broadcast live online.
The local band Rubber Band took home the Silver Group Award, and “My Favourite Group” Award for the second consecutive year.
One of the band's member Nai Mang expressed gratitude to HongKongers, and the goal of bringing hope through their music. “In the past year with COVID-19, we seemed to have lost a lot, and injustice is still happening under the pandemic. I believe that as creative workerd, we have the responsibility to give you hope, and tell you that now is yet the time for despair. HongKongers, hang on!”
The band vocal Luk Ho, during their performance of the song “Endless”, said that the piece was not just a song of encouragement, but also of company. “This song is a record of what everyone has been through during 2019-20. Even though tough times feel endless, we will always be with you.”
In another acceptance speech, he quoted lyrics from the song "All we have is now" which he co-wrote with another local singer Charmaine Fong: "Take a deep breath and keep going”, to encourage fellow HongKongers. “We must take a deep breath now. No matter how things will change in 2021, 2022... We will keep going.”

In Hong Kong, on New Year's eve (December 31, 2021), many citizens went up to the #LionRock to count down to the year 2022. Among them, some brought neon light signs that read “GLORY HK” and “FREE HK”.
While some citizens on the site were occupied taking pictures, others lighted up their handphones to form a human chain. Just like the pro-democracy “Hong Kong Way” demonstration in 2019, a line of human chain was soon created, displaying the outline of Lion Rock with the light from the mobile phones.
Together Hongkongers counted down and cheered “May glory to Hong Kong” to welcome 2022.

On the hilltop, some elderly walked by and uttered words of encouragement to the youngsters, “hang on,” “don’t give up”, while others passed on drinks to them.
Down the hill, some citizens raised laser pointers and pointed towards the hill top to echo and show their support.
[Editors' notes: Inspired by the Baltic human chain in 1989, the “Hong Kong Way” was organized by pro-democracy HongKongers in August 2019 during the #AntiELAB Movement.
The human chain expresses Hongkongers' yearning for freedom and basic human rights. Tens of thousands of Hongkongers lined up on pavements, overpasses, waterfronts and parks, snaking a line of nearly 30 miles (50km) long through Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.

In the annual Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation organized by Commercial Radio Hong Kong on January 1, 2022, several singers expressed words of encouragement to Hongkongers in their thank you speech, addressing the difficult times faced by the locals.
Vincy Chan whose song was named to one of the Top Ten in 2021, said on stage, "As long as we can cross over, there is a future. Uphold our beliefs, never give up -- we must hang on."
Stephanie Cheng, whose song titled "Drink more water" was named Top 4 in the 2021 music chart, expressed that the past year was a difficult one. She then said, "[we need to] be strong in order to overcome... It doesn't mean there is nothing one can do when in a fragile state. Take good care of ourself, then we will find hope. Hope everyone will not give up."
In response to the immigration wave out of Hong Kong, RubberBand, a local band, received the grand award for a song about farewell called "Ciao". While the drummer Ah Wai said the song is deidicated to all Hongkongers whenever they are, his fellow band member Lai Man added, "the truth will prevail." Ah Wai also expressed hope for reunion one day, despite having said goodbye. At last, vocal "no. 6" Mau Hou Cheong said, "We must live on, no matter you are staying in Hong Kong or you choose to leave. This song is dedicated to all Hongkongers. Thank you, Hongkongers. We are always Hongkongers."
At last, MC $OHO and KidNey, a two-men rapper group which was awarded the Silver Prize in the newcomer (band) catergory, said they need to thank the management of their agency.
