The vice-chairman of the Yau Tsim Mong District Council, Yu Tak-po met with the press near the compulsory lockdown area in Yau Ma Tei on Jan 26, 2021.

He expressed that the district council, like the residents, only learnt of the government's sudden enforcement of the lockdown on the news.

He shared the residents' shock in finding their homes to be suddenly included in the "restrict area" when many of them were still at work or went out for grocery shopping.

Yu pointed out the confusion and the chaos caused by Chief Executive Carrie Lam's decision for a "guerilla-style" in carrying out mandatory lockdown that morning.

On Jan 6, 2021, the Hong Kong police arrested 55 pro-democracy figures in Hong Kong, accusing them of "subverting state power" for running a primary election in the pro-democracy camp.

As part of the bail condition, they were supposed to report to the police in April; however, on Feb 26, 2021, they received calls from the Hong Kong police, demanding them to show up at the police station 2 days later on Sunday, Feb 28, which is over 1 month ahead of the scheduled date.

The police refused to disclose whether arrests would be made.

Many activists had prepared for the worst and extended gratitude to their family, friends and supporters for their love and care all along.

Chinese state media calls Australia a ‘gangster’ as trade war flares

China has accused Australia of being part of an “axis of white supremacy” because of our intelligence alliance with Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Global times, state-run media mouthpiece, said Five Eyes was taking coordinated action against China. And description about Five Eyes in the Global times was “Five Eyes alliance members are all English-speaking. The formation of four states, except the UK, is the result of British colonisation.”

They continued to censure that the Five Eyes countries had been bought together by the US to become the “center of the West” and the bloc had become an organization targeting China and Russia.

#University in Hong Kong Cancels #WorldPressPhoto Exhibition with Protest Photos

The Hong Kong Baptist University (#HKBU) cancelled an exhibition of World Press Photo winners right before its opening, citing "safety and security" fears as the reason.

The exhibition was set to display prize-winning photos of the 2019 Anti-ELAB protests.

The university, however, did not further explain what their safety "fears" were.

World Press Photo is an annual international competition. In the past, its exhibition has difficulties in taking place inside China.

In October 2020, a similar echibition in Macau, was shut down without explanation by authorities.

U.S. to Impose Sweeping Rule Aimed at China Technology Threats

The Biden administration plans to allow a sweeping Trump-era rule aimed at combating Chinese technology threats.

The rule, initially proposed in November, enables the Commerce Department to ban technology-related business transactions that it determines pose a national security threat, part of an effort to secure U.S. supply chains. Companies in technology, telecommunications, finance and other industries say the rule could stifle innovation and hurt competitiveness, and had expected it to be delayed as the administration undertakes a broad review of U.S. policy on Chinese technology.

“Trustworthy information and communications technology and services are essential to our national and economic security and remain a top priority for the Biden/Harris administration,” a Commerce Department representative said

#FactWire: #Sinovac limits Hong Kong’s protection against infection from #Omicron, analysis suggests

//Analysis conducted by FactWire suggests that only 16.5 per cent of Hong Kong’s population is currently protected against infection from the Omicron variant of Covid-19, when factors such as the percentage of vaccinated residents, the type of vaccine received, and waning antibody levels are taken into consideration.

This is due to the limited effectiveness of the Chinese-made CoronaVac vaccine, commonly known as Sinovac – one of the two options available in Hong Kong – against infection from the Omicron variant. Almost half of those receiving their first or third jabs in February opted for Sinovac, which may prevent severe illness but not infection.

...three doses of Sinovac may only be 36 per cent effective, falling drastically to 19 per cent after three months, and standing at a mere 8 per cent after six months.

Had BioNTech been the only vaccine offered in Hong Kong since the beginning of its vaccination programme, a protection rate of 56.93 per cent would have been achieved by the end of April, and would have reached 77.4 per cent at the end of October.//
