20-Year-Old Student Charged With Assaulting Police Has Steel Plates Installed Permanently in His Shoulder

In the police-civilian conflict on 3 Aug 2019, a 20-year-old student was charged with assaulting a sergeant and an officer outside Wong Tai Sin MTR station. He pled not guilty. The case was heard on 20 Aug 2020 in Kwun Tong Magistrates’ Court.

The officer who claimed he was hurt said that he grabbed the defendant’s left arm, yet the defendant still rushed forward, causing the three of them to fall. He suggested that he did not know the defendant was sent to the emergency room afterwards for broken bones and was hospitalised for 12 days. He stressed that he did not use excessive force.

Thd sergeant involved suggested that he was not sure if the defendant intended to attack them.

The defendant’s attorney played a video, showing that the defendant was standing, and a black figure tapped his left shoulder, causing him to fall. It was confirmed that it was the hand of police officer Mak Wing-cheung. The attorney pointed out that the defendant fell after the officer tapped his shoulder, which contradicted Mak’s testimony. The attorney also stated that the defendant was found to have broken bones in his left shoulder, and steel plates have to be installed permanently.

Beijing is not happy with deal cancellations between Australian and Chinese companies

The $600 million takeover of Australian drinks company Lion by Chinese company Mengniu Dairy has been blocked by Australian Treasurer Josh Frydenberg on national security grounds.

Mengniu Dairy has 25 per cent owned by the Chinese government.

Australia's Foreign Investment Review Board cleared the deal in February 2020 but Frydenberg stepped in to prevent it, as the political tensions and trade war between the two nations escalated.

Chinese state-run news, Global Times, wrote: 'Banning a Chinese company from buying an Australian dairy brand doesn't make much economic sense. It would show that bilateral relations will continue on a downward spiral, with the Australian side willing to risk its global reputation in order to maintain a tough line against China in all aspects.'

Chinese government's technological military attack on Canadian company

In 2004 Nortel cyber-security advisor Brian Shields investigated a serious breach in the telecom giant’s network. This would only turn out to be an attack from China. More than just experiencing a breach in the network, files and important documents were also downloaded. A data theft was going on.

While the Canadian company was experiencing what seemed to be a massive crisis, Huawei suddenly replaced Nortel as the world’s dominant internet technology provider.

The Chinese government is not just stealing information through the usage of technology, but also 'providing' technology to Huawei, in order to gain information.

Textbook used in Victorian schools repeats Chinese government propaganda

Among the concerns regarding the textbook is the inclusion of the “nine-dash line” map which shows China claiming most of the South China Sea – a position contested by Australia and numerous othrr countries in the region and challenged by an international tribunal. It is labelled in the book as the “map of China”.

The publishers said that its inclusion was a production error.

On top of this misleading information, the textbook also included portions that repeated Chinese Communist party propaganda.

Exclusive-Hong Kong's former chief judge says upholding rule of law not political

Hong Kong’s former chief judge urged solicitors to continue speaking up for the rule of law, saying it was their public duty and not political, as lawyers chose a council to govern their profession overshadowed by a national security law imposed by China.

Former chief justice Geoffrey Ma made his remarks to several hundred members of the Law Society on Tuesday and later provided Reuters with a transcript of the speech in response to questions.

Hong Kong judges symbolise one of the core promises of the city’s return from British to Chinese rule in 1997 along with continued freedoms: the right to a fair trial and equality under the law, all administered by an independent judiciary.

HK National Security Police Accuses Veteran Pro-democracy NGO as "Agent of Foreign Power"

On August 25, 2021 in Hong Kong, the National Security Police appeared at the barrister's office of #ChowHangTung, the vice-president of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China. The police cited Article 43 of the National Security Law and demanded Chow to hand over "information about the Alliance" including meeting records since 2014.

The Alliance is a pro-demoncracy charity group established in Hong Kong, as a response to the 1989 June 4th Tiananman Massacre by the Chinese Communist Party that year. The Alliance has been organizing the June 4 candlelight vigil at Hong Kong's Victoria Park since 1990.

According to Chow, the police in the letter claimed that the Alliance is "an agent of foreign power". The police specifically asked for information regarding the Alliance's potential exchanges with "political parties outside the PRC or Taiwan"; Mark Simon, the former aide of Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai; and humanitarian lawyers' group.

Chow said, "The whole matter is clearly an abuse of the national security law to suppress civil society."

Chow also said other core members of the Alliance have received similar demand from the police.

China schools: 'Xi Jinping Thought' introduced into curriculum

China will introduce the political ideology of the Chinese President in its national curriculum.

"Xi Jinping thought" will help "teenagers establish Marxist beliefs", said the Ministry of Education (MOE) in new guidelines.

The ideology will be integrated from primary school up to university.

This is the latest effort by Mr Xi to consolidate the ruling Chinese Communist Party's role in different areas of society.

No hope for pro-democracy films to be shown in Hong Kong: disappointing filmmaker claims

The Hong Kong government promulgated in June 2021 an amendment to the inspector's guideline of Film censorship regulations.

On the same day, the Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration (#OFNAA) declined approval for a short film, titled “Far From Home” which took anti-ELAB movement as background. The short film was intended to join the 15th Fresh Wave International Short Firm contest.

The film’s director Mok Kwan-ling told stand News on August 25, 2021 that in OFNAA’s response to her on August 17, the office requested as many as 14 counts of amendments. She described such request as excessive to the extent of going in contrary to the original intention of the film.

Without viable alternative,Mok decided to withdraw her film, saying that “it is not hopeful for it to be screened in Hong Kong”.

Germany Proposed to Sop the Trade with Cosco Shipping International

The German government proposes to refuse Cosco Shipping International (00517) being listed as the largest company at the Hamburg cargo terminal. It can avoid excessive reliance on China and let the mainland face obstruction on overseas acquisition.

German media said that most German politicians have doubts about COSCO taking a stake in the Hamburg Terminal. They are not willing to pass the fundamental infrastructure to the Chinese people.

The Germany Financial Minister, Robert Habeck, worries that Cosco Shipping's stake will increase Germany's reliance on China. Therefore, he intends to disagree with this trade.

Hamburg is currently the third-largest European terminal and the 19th-largest port in the world.
