Xiaomi is collecting browser data even in incognito mode.

(01 May) Summary: Researchers discovered that the Mi Browser Pro and Mint Browser apps that come preinstalled in Xiaomi handsets gleaned data about what folders users open and to which screens they swipe, and other data from the handsets.

The data was then sent to remote servers in Singapore and Russia, though the web domains that hosted the servers were registered in Beijing. Xiaomi denied any wrongdoing to Forbes, arguing all data transferred is encrypted and anonymized. Still, Cirlig was able to easily decrypt the data into readable chunks of information that could be tied back to an individual. Just two months ago, another Chinese company, Cheetah Mobile, was caught sniffing data on web use, wi-fi access point names, and other activity like how a user swipes.

Japan’s ruling party to ban Tiktok and other Chinese apps

(28 Jul) The Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) reports that a group of lawmakers from Japan's ruling party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), are proposing restrictions on Chinese apps like the video-sharing platform TikTok due to data security concerns.

The report stated that the LDP's group on regulatory policy, led by tax panel chief Akira Amari, would hold a meeting today to discuss restrictions on Chinese apps. There have also been reports of information leaks from banking systems that use Chinese-developed artificial intelligence to scrutinize funds etc. The group will urge the government to adopt its recommendations to ensure Japan's security from such threats.

#Japan Should Not Ignore #TikTok Data Security Risks
Liberal Democratic Party Proposal on Restricting the Use as early as September

Followed by the ban on the use of TikTok in India and the request from the U.S. on the parent company of TikTok for selling the local business of ByteDance, the Ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s Tax Panel Chief of Japan Akira Amari, said that Japan should not ignore the data security risks from the use of TikTok.

During the interview on Fuji Television Network on Aug 16, Amari pointed that other countries such as the United Kingdom, India and the U.S. are aware of the data security risks of TikTok, which the Japanese government should not ignore. “Japan cannot just stand beside and watch because many countries have pointed out the risks,” he said.

Amari added, Japanese companies should assume that partnerships with Chinese firms would lead to data leakage. If Japan compromised on data security, other countries, who supported freedom, democracy and the rule of law, might rule out Japan, which posed a crisis to Japan. “Japan is the country with the least sense of crisis,” said Amari.

A #US Federal Communications commissioner pushes #Apple and #Google to remove #TikTok from their app stores

In a letter to the companies released on Tuesday, Jine 29, 2022, #BrendanCarr, a Republican commissioner, said he believed that “TikTok’s pattern of conduct and misrepresentations regarding the unfettered access that persons in Beijing have to sensitive U.S. user data” violated Apple’s and Google’s standards and that TikTok should be taken out of the app stores...

The Biden administration has considered other measures to keep American data away from China but has not publicly pushed TikTok to cut ties with its Chinese owner.

TikTok has maintained that it is taking steps to keep employees in China from gaining access to its data. Shortly before a recent news report revealed it was struggling to do so, it said it was routing all data from its U.S. users through servers controlled by Oracle.//
