Hongkongers in Exile Open Pro-Protest Restaurant "Aeglis" Open in Taiwan

During the ongoing pro-democracy movement, a number of Hong Kong protesters are in exile in Taiwan. Initiated by lawyer Wong Kwok-tung, Hongkongers living in exile in Taiwan opened a restaurant "Aeglis". The shop is located in the alley of Daan District, Taipei.

Many people visited the restaurant on its first day of business. Those with a reservation still had to queue up for almost an hour. The manager, Chou, was busy greeting and thanking the guests for their support.

The restaurant was originally scheduled to open on a later date, but after the news got spread, many inquiries poured in from Taiwan and Hong Kong and so the restaurant decided to advance its opening.

The protest slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times" is sculpted on the walls of the restaurant. Inside, the screen displays the music video of protest anthem "May Glory Be to Hong Kong". Customers sang along to cheer for their fellow protesters who fight and bleed in Hong Kong.

The phenomenal popularity of the restaurant is a rare sight in the service industry during the coronavirus crisis. There were many guests coming to the door one after another. Some people did not have a meal, but they did not forget to write some cheering cards and hang them on the "Lennon Wall" in the restaurant.

Someone wrote, "It ’s an honor to be the first group of guests, may Aeglis be without trouble." Protest slogans such as "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times," "Five Demands, Not one less" were found on the ordering receipts.

According to Apple Daily reporters from Taiwan, the food is also good. At 3 pm on the day of visit, several menu items had already been sold out.

Close-up: From "Five Demands" to "Hong Kong Independence". A new phase of resistance under the National Security Law

(25 May)Ever since the Wuhan pneumonia stormed the world, Hong Kong's Anti-ELAB movement was put on hold until Beijing recently took the reins to formulate "Hong Kong's National Security Law". Tens of thousands of people returned to the streets against the backdrop of teargas smoke everywhere. Having experienced nearly a year of resistance, the protesters of today appeared slightly different from before. As the National Security Law draws near, their slogans no longer stop at "Five demands". Some of them are demanding true "Hong Kong independence".

A slogan's evolution from "Five demands" to "Hong Kong independence"

With cameras in hand, Stand News journalist entered the crowds today. They realised that the [Cantonese] 8-character slogan, "Five demands, not one less" has evolved into "Hong Kong independence, the only way out". Under Hong Kong's National Security Law, the demands of Hongkongers appeared to change. Shouting "Hong Kong independence" was no longer limited to youngers. Older generations joined in.

In the past 6 months, 50-year old Guenjie (pseudonym) had participated in the movement as a Peaceful* protester. She witnessed anti-riot police beating up youngsters with batons in Mong Kok. At the time, not only she was unable to prevent it, but she also got pepper-sprayed. She admitted that when the movement began, she never wanted Hong Kong independence. The slogan she shouted was merely "Carrie Lam step down". She remarked, "Destroying the Chinese Communist Party [CCP] was unnecessary. It's just [our] faulty government. If Carrie Lam stepped down, it would've been fine. But that is not the case now. There is no other way except for independence." She still insists on taking to the streets today because her heart breaks for the youngsters. Having lived in Northern Ireland for two decades, she said of the rapidly worsening brutality, "No matter how chaotic it was (back there), they were never beaten like this." Witnessing the advance of the National Security Law, she said remorsefully, "Hongkongers originally didn't care about politics. If there is blame, then put it on our generation. While the Sino-British [Declaration] negotiations were happening, Hongkongers were occupied with making money."

Editor's Note:
* "Peaceful" in this context refers to peaceful, rational, non-violent

4 June Kwun Tong Review-
Taiwanese overseas students hope to stand with Hongkongers.
Hongkongers: our obligations to fight for our city.

(05 Jun) Last night was 31st anniversary of “64 incident”(Tiananmen Square Massacre). It was the first unapproved memorial ceremony held by Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China. Citizens gathered in different districts to mourn. We had an interview with two university students and their friends who were attending the memorial ceremony in Kwun Tong Promenade. “Ar Peer” wearing in black is a Taiwanese student in HKU. Her schoolmate, Kelly, was her first time attending the “64” memorial ceremony.

“Ar Peer” is year one university student. She said she knew the incident of Tiananmen Sqaure Massacre from her teachers in Taiwan and she has watched a special report about this on TV. In her high school, her schoolmates didn’t keen on politics. That’s why she hasn’t attended any memorial ceremonies related to Tiananmen Sqaure Massacre. She started to provide attention to politics and urged to participate in more political activities when she came to Hong Kong for studies. She thinks Hongkonger take Tiananmen Square Massacre’s memorial more serious than Taiwanese. After the anti-ELAB movement, freedom in Hong Kong is narrowing down gradually. She lamented the suppression of the memorial ceremonies this year. During her studies at Hong Kong university, she met different Hong Kong students and could feel how Hongkongers care about their society. Under the influence of actions of Hongkongers, she hopes to stay with Hongkongers.

Her friend, Kelly, said she was worried that she wouldn’t to have a chance to join the Tiananmen Square Massacre memorial ceremonies anymore because of the restriction from the National Security Law. She was hoping to attend when she still has some freedom. She started to participate in the social movement last year. Even though, in the future, the suppression may increase. She thinks she still has the obligation to continue to fight. “If it is not you, then it will be the others. Just about timing. And your willingness to participate.”

An unforgettable Hong Kong protest photo for Koreans

(13 Jun)This week marks the anniversary of the Hong Kong protests since last June. There are moments that are particularly unforgettable to Koreans who are concerned about the developments in Hong Kong.

Recently, I saw a Korean online media re-posting a photo that was taken during last year's protests, and the journalist captioned the photo as “A girl’s doll and Hong Kong’s future”. Instead of crowds gathering or a rousing protest scene in the photo background, the photo only shows a small stuffed toy, abandoned on the ground.

The photo was taken during a protest last August, when a girl was arrested on the street, the string the small doll was hanging loosened and fell to the ground. The doll’s name is Cooky, a bunny designed by Jungkook from the Korean boy band BTS.

This heartbreaking scene, accompanied by the band's doll, of which the motto is 'Speak Yourself', touched a chord in the hearts of Koreans as they also worried that the photo would be a metaphor for Hong Kong’s future.

Hong Kong human rights activists are seeking YOUR shelter

Since the protests started last year, close to 9,000 pro-democracy protesters have been arrested and some of them have been charged with rioting which carries a maximum of 10-year prison sentence. “Rioting” means a noisy, violent and uncontrolled public meeting. There is no denying that there is violence in the pro-democracy movement of Hong Kong, in fact violence is used by both the police and protesters. Having said that, protesters resort to violence as defence against indiscriminate and arbitrary arrest that would be followed by trampling on human dignity, torture, or sexual assault; reports also claim that there are dissidents and their family members and friends missing, abducted, or even killed.

Is it fair to label pro-democracy activities as "riots" when protesters use bricks, sticks, and their bodies to protect others and their belief whereas riot policemen use rubber bullets, water cannons, tear gas or even live rounds? Furthermore, those injured protesters, some of them were either shot by guns or tortured by riot policemen, have been charged as rioters. Is there still “justice” in our society?

In fact, there is only social injustice in Hong Kong nowadays. Therefore, according to official figures, at least 62 Hong Kong SAR passport holders have applied for temporary protection visas onshore since November last year. Also, dozens have fled to Canada, while hundreds to Taiwan which has just drawn up a plan to provide humanitarian support to Hong Kongers. Those countries chosen by protesters are classified as pro-democracy “shelters”. In contrast, Hong Kongers do not believe in the Basic Law and CCP anymore. Honestly, they do not think that they could get fair trials in Hong Kong courts as the judiciary has been totally ruined by the political problems. The rule of law has disappeared in Hong Kong since #CCP interrupted the internal affairs of Hong Kong, the day when the “high degree of autonomy” was deteriorated.

Hong Kong is now in an abysmal condition due to police violence and the implementation of the national security law. Thanks for various countries that support Hong Kongers in different platforms and advocating the faith of the movement. Yet, there is no time for protesters who have been suffering to wait for the bright shines on Hong Kong. Those targeted protesters might be in danger as they are targeted by the local government or Beijing. No one knows what their consequences would be. So, I am here to ask pro-democracy countries to provide humanitarian assistance to Hong Kongers. I am sure most protesters are unwilling to leave Hong Kong as they care deeply about the place where they were born and raised. Sadly, they have no choice under the tyranny.

Your decision is about their life and death. Act now to help save lives.

//To be , or not to be? That is the question- Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer / The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune/ Or to take arms against a sea of troubles”/ And by opposing, end them? (Hamlet, William Shakespeare)

#BrickArches Designed by Hong Kong Protestors Win People's Choice in #BeasleyDesignoftheYear

Made from ordinary bricks and designed by Hong Kong protestors, the Brick Arches were nominated in the "transport" category in the Beasley Design of the Year.

Small but powerful structures, the Brick Arches were used by Hong Kong protestors from the pro-democracy movement as roadblocks to slow down police vehicles. Much more difficult to clear than ordinary roadblocks, these locally called ‘mini-Stonehenges’ or ‘brick battlegrounds’ became widespread in the pro-democracy protests in November 2019.

Hong Kong Court Sends Three More Pro-democracy Protesters to Over 5 years in Jail for "Rioting", Causing Public Grievances

On September 25, 2021, the district court convicted three pro-democracy protesters of "rioting" during the police siege of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (#PolyU) in November 2019. The three young people were arrested during clashes in nearby Jordan as citizens attempted to break the police siege. They are sentenced to jail terms ranging from 5 years to 5 years and 8 months.

The defendants were calm when hearing the sentence. When the court adjourned, pro-democracy supporters waved to them and said, "hang on!". Some shout to the court, "there are no rioters, only tyranny!" and "Shame!"

Meanwhile, the mother of the principle defendant wept, shouting "unfair", "killing the innocent" and "my son is not guilty!" She continued to cry and almost collapsed in the corridor.

The families of other defendants tried to console her, pointing out that her son would be saddened seeing his mother in such a state: "We have to go through this together. We understand. It is not like we do not feel anything".

Many people in the courtroom broke into tears, mourning their fellow pro-democracy Hongkongers.
