Hong Kong Bar Association Chairman: The Government Owes Honkongers a Proper Explanation

//The chairman of the Bar Association, Philip Dykes, said on April 19 that Hong Kong people are entitled to a proper explanation as to why that is the case. He said he personally thinks the situation remains as "clear as mud".

Hong Kong Bar Association Chairman: Beijing is Intervening Hong Kong Affairs

The chairman of the Bar Association, Philip Dykes, said on April 19, 2020, "[The Hong Kong government] switching the positions two, three times over a period of a few hours, indicates a lack of clarity... it's not enough to say, 'oh, we're not bound by Article 22, that's it'."

Dykes expresses that the Hong Kong people are entitled to a proper explanation as to why that is the case. He said he personally thinks the situation remains as "clear as mud".

He pointed out that even in the criminal court, if someone was accused of stealing, evidence must be listed in the court. He believes that the government ’s move is like the practice of an authoritarian government.

The Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office and the Liaison Office of the People’s Republic of China recently issued a high-profile statement criticizing Legislative Councillor and barrister Dennis Kwok for delaying the election of the chairman and even misconduct of public officials.

Dykes pointed out that Beijing's statement is a serious accusation. In fact, what the council members says in the legislature and the committee is protected by law, and it is not enough to constitute a misconduct of public officials.

Besides, even if there is a real foul, external agencies should not speak up. He believes that the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office and the Liaison Office of the Chinese Communist Party of China are clearly intervening in the internal affairs of Hong Kong. "This is an intervention in the operation of the Legislative Council. The Legislative Council should say: No, thank you. We can handle our internal affairs ... One of the three powers of direct intervention in Hong Kong. "

After the Police arrested more than 15 democratic politicians on April 18 in a high-profile manner, Dykes believes that for the sake of Hong Kong ’s international reputation, the government has a responsibility to clearly explain such a large arrest.

Prince Charles' Fear Has Come True in 2020: Martin Lee Arrested

"Thus we left Hong Kong to her fate and the hope that Martin Lee, the leader of the Democrats, would not be arrested," wrote Prince Charles in his diary entry after the 1997 Hong Kong Handover.

81-year-old Martin Lee was among the 15 prominent pro-democracy figures arrested on April 18, 2020.

After he was released on bail on April 18, Lee said, “After months of witnessing youths being arrested and prosecuted while I stayed out of it, I actually felt guilty… I feel proud to walk the road of democracy with these outstanding youths in Hong Kong.”

Police Commissioner Chris Tang on the same day hit out, by referring but without directly naming Lee, that he should be "ashamed" of himself for "being a bad influence" on young people in Hong Kong. The police chief added that the police are "unbiased and fearless" when making arrests.

Night on the Fated Train: We have no weapon, how could we strike back?

Watch video:

Ah Chun attended the rally on Hong Kong Island last year on July 21. After the rally, he went to take the MTR to Yuen Long and from there take a connecting bus home.

When arriving the Yuen Long station at around 10:45pm, he overheard unusual happening at the station concourse.

A group of passengers went down to the station concourse where they saw 3 people in white shirt smacking others. Ah Chun and other passengers howled for the white-clad to stop.

However, more and more white-clads stormed into the train station, holding rattans and wood sticks as weapons. Ah Chun was taking photos with his phone so he was targeted and smacked on his arm. He also witnessed how the white-clad attacked Ho Guai-lan, a female reporter of Stand News. “She was outside the turnstile gate. I can’t save her. She was standing too close to the fighting scene...”

“We have no weapon, how could we strike back? The best we could do was to use backpack as cover.” Sadly, Ah Chun didn’t wear a backpack that evening, so he used his hands and arms to protect himself. Two civilians came to protect Ah Chun using their backpacks, but they were hit on their head and nose, causing severe bleeding.

Some civilians then grabbed fire hose and shot water at the white-clad, “we learnt this from the Police, shoot water to disperse them.”

Later on, Ah Chun saw two police officers walk by Yuen Long Station. At the moment, most passengers were behind the turnstile gate, standing off with the white-clads. The Police walked by a restaurant which was only 10 – 20 meters away.

These officers could certainly see the scene, not mentioning that civilians were desperately shouting for their assistance. Such cries fell on deaf ears, as the officers walked away as if not noticing anything. They did not engage the situation, not even slowing down their steps and departed the station via exit G.

“They just walked straight by, not doing anything. Why are they armed for?”

Legislator Lam Cheuk-ting and his assistant arrived Yuen Long slightly later than Ah Chun and became the target of white-clad gangsters. They went up to the station platform with other passengers and boarded a train that just arrived, not knowing that the train would remain at the station with its doors open for the duration of the attack.

The white-clad gangsters chasing after the group of passengers also arrived at the platform, leaving the civilians unable to escape. Ah Chun then witnessed another horrific scene of the 721 incident.

Ah Chun’s video showed that the white-clads used rattans and wood sticks, wrapped in the Chinese National Flag, to attack civilians curled up in train cabin. They have nothing to protect themselves but umbrellas. The cabin was filled with screams and chaos.

Hongkongers in Exile Open Pro-Protest Restaurant "Aeglis" Open in Taiwan

During the ongoing pro-democracy movement, a number of Hong Kong protesters are in exile in Taiwan. Initiated by lawyer Wong Kwok-tung, Hongkongers living in exile in Taiwan opened a restaurant "Aeglis". The shop is located in the alley of Daan District, Taipei.

Many people visited the restaurant on its first day of business. Those with a reservation still had to queue up for almost an hour. The manager, Chou, was busy greeting and thanking the guests for their support.

The restaurant was originally scheduled to open on a later date, but after the news got spread, many inquiries poured in from Taiwan and Hong Kong and so the restaurant decided to advance its opening.

The protest slogan "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times" is sculpted on the walls of the restaurant. Inside, the screen displays the music video of protest anthem "May Glory Be to Hong Kong". Customers sang along to cheer for their fellow protesters who fight and bleed in Hong Kong.

The phenomenal popularity of the restaurant is a rare sight in the service industry during the coronavirus crisis. There were many guests coming to the door one after another. Some people did not have a meal, but they did not forget to write some cheering cards and hang them on the "Lennon Wall" in the restaurant.

Someone wrote, "It ’s an honor to be the first group of guests, may Aeglis be without trouble." Protest slogans such as "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times," "Five Demands, Not one less" were found on the ordering receipts.

According to Apple Daily reporters from Taiwan, the food is also good. At 3 pm on the day of visit, several menu items had already been sold out.

Hong Kong Free Press: Hong Kong govt’s spends multi-million dollar in US lobbying operation

//HKFP has reviewed years worth of disclosure filings submitted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (#HKTDC) and its lobbying firms as part of requirements under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (#FARA), and found that the Hong Kong government lobbied US politicians specifically on the Act in at least six in-person meetings, after massive protests broke out in Hong Kong in 2014, and again in 2019.

The HKTDC paid close to HK$84 million (US$10.8 million) to US lobbying firms from 2014 to 2020, according to data provided by the Centre for Responsive Politics. It also received a total of HK$374 million (US$48.2 million) from its head office to cover expenses that require FARA disclosure during this time.

The HKTDC was just one of the myriad of entities among the China lobby that tried to influence US policies by making a case for mutual economic interests to American legislators, Hong Kong Democracy Council activist Samuel Chu said.

“Instead of them going directly [to say] that ‘we wanted to push back on the human rights and democracy part of the law,’ they send the trade and business people to say that the bill is bad,” said Chu.//

Hong Kong democrat and DJ #TamTakChi jailed for 40 months over 11 charges, including ‘uttering seditious words’

//Hong Kong pro-democracy activist “Fast Beat” Tam Tak-chi has been sentenced to 40 months in jail and given a HK$5,000 fine after being convicted of 11 charges, including seven counts under the colonial-era sedition law.

The DJ and former vice-chair of People Power has been held in custody since he was arrested in September 2020. He appeared in front of handpicked national security judge Stanley Chan at the District Court on Wednesday.

The 50-year-old activist faced 14 charges, including “uttering seditious words,” disorderly conduct in a public place, conspiracy to utter seditious words, holding or convening an unauthorised assembly, incitement to knowingly take part in an unauthorised assembly, and refusing to obey an order given by an authorised officer...

After the court session ended, Tam shouted: “Mum, take care of yourself, you will have to live longer to wait for me.”

Tam’s ex-DJ partner, former lawmaker Raymond Chan, was among those sitting in the public gallery. People stood up and waved at Tam as he stepped into the dock, and the activist waved back.

Tam is among the 47 pro-democracy figures awaiting trial under the #NationalSecurityLaw over their roles in a primary election for the 2020 Legislative Council election, which was later postponed.//

2 handed suspended 2-month sentences for inciting others to cast invalid votes in Hong Kong’s ‘patriots only’ election

//Two people who were convicted of inciting others to cast invalid votes in Hong Kong’s “patriots only” legislative election last December have been given suspended sentences of two months’ in prison.

...The pair were accused of sharing a Facebook post by self-exiled pro-democracy lawmaker Ted Hui calling on Hongkongers to cast blank or invalid votes in the Legislative Council (#LegCo) election. As part of Beijing’s sweeping electoral overhaul, the authorities amended electoral laws last year, making it illegal to incite others to cast invalid votes and obstruct others from voting.//

Over a dozen companies refuse to transport #PillarofShame, citing concerns over Chinese government's reprisal

The Pillar of Shame - the Tiananmen memorial at the University of Hong Kong (#HKU) which stood for more than 20 years - has been dismantled and packed away in cargo containers by the University management in the middle of the night in December 2021.

Since then, the creator of the Pillar, Danish artist #JensGalschiøt, had been attempting to ship the Pillar back to Denmark.

In a statement, Galschiøt said that his team, including lawyers, 2 shipping companies, and even the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs were involved in the effort, but they had yet to find a company to move the cargo container from storage to the container wharf.

12 shipping companies turned them down, all citing concerns over the Chinese government taking vengeance on them.

Galschiøt reiterated that he is still hopeful for success, but it remains unclear as to when the Pillar can be shipped out of Hong Kong.
