#Interview With District Councillor Cheung Ka Yi on Police Deployment in Plaza Hollywood Shopping Mall

2045 | Diamond Hill

Reporter: Hello, District Councillor Cheung Ka Yi, what brings you to this shopping mall today?

Cheung: I saw online that netizens have called for a "Sing with You" event 7pm tonight here in the Plaza Hollywood shopping mall, so a couple other Councillors from the Wong Tai Sin District and I came to observe the situation and the police's deployment here tonight.

Reporter: What have you observed so far?

Cheung: Local residents have told us that there was a heavy police presence surrounding the shopping mall since this afternoon, like 10 police trucks in one street block. Police in full riot gear were already patrolling the footbridges and the areas around the mall. People started gathering in the mall around 7pm, and at around 7:30pm the police suddenly rushed into the mall -- this mall has 3 floors and they came in through the 2nd floor, announcing that nobody is allowed to gather because of "social distancing guidelines", and demanded everyone to leave. They kept patrolling inside the mall. The situation started off very peacefully, but then a verbal argument began, and a constituent from my district was stopped-and-searched by the police.

Reporter: I see that shoppers are still shopping and dining in the mall. Have the police announced what their next steps would be?

Cheung: We asked the mall's management just now, and there were no plans to shut down, as you can see all shops were open for business, until the police rushed in and shopkeepers started closing their stores. Many of the people are in the mall to shop or to celebrate Mothers' Day with a nice dinner with their families, but they have caused all shops to close and lose business for the rest of the night. I have asked the mall's management, and they said there are no plans to forcibly shut down the whole mall, but in reality it has brought great inconvenience to the residents who are here just to shop and dine. The police claimed that they came in because someone called the police expressing concerns that people in the mall are not being socially distant.

Reporter: Have the mall's security guards or management been able to confirm that somebody actually called the police?

Cheung: I am still trying to understand the situation, but they haven't responded to me yet. We are following up with them to see if this actually happened, but as you know, once the police are inside, there's no way to ask them to leave.

Police Reportedly Resting In Chi Lin Nunnery

2200 | Diamond Hill
After the riot police entered the mall, the number of patrons appeared to be significantly fewer. Some of them, however, have returned to the atrium area and have resumed with the chanting of protest slogans.

A few officers were standing at the MTR exit to the mall and inside of the mall itself, but not at the mall's entrances, with the exception of two police vehicles across the street.

The remainning couple of hundreds of riot police officers from earlier this evening were reportedly resting in the Chi Lin Nunnery across the street.

#Hongkongers Deliver Flowers to #Mothers of Jailed Pro-democracy Protestors

"#Wallfare", a support group for political prisoners launched by former legislator #BottleShiu, delivered flowers to 140 mothers of imprisoned protestors in Hong Kong.

The group said since last Friday, 22 volunteers have sent to the mothers flowers and presents, including fruit tea, stress-reliving essential oils and supermarket coupons.

Social workers were also stationed should any of them need emotional support or just a chat.

“We wish all mothers a happy mother’s day, except 'that one' Hongkongers hate the most.”

On #MothersDay, Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Activists, remanded or exiled, Pay Homage to Their Mothers

Usually on Mother’s Day, many families would go out and celebrate. However, some are less fortunate this year in Hong Kong.

On May 9, 2021, exiled former #Demosisto leader #NathanLaw posted a photo with his mother on Facebook. He said this festival reminds him of the many pro-democracy protestors who became separated from their families. “Only until justice is done can family warmth return.”

Nathan Law recalled, “no matter how busy I am, on Mother's Day, I can always let go of my work and sit before a dinner table with my family.”

He admitted he saw festivals as an excuse to step away from work, but this year he thought of all the protestors who were forced into leaving their own families due to political oppression.

“For everyone who is remanded, imprisoned, or exiled, there is always a mother at home waiting for their return, waiting for days, for months, for years.”

He hoped there can be a new meaning for Mother’s Day. “Please remember those behind bars and oceans apart.”

The facebook page of democrat #TakchiTam, who is remanded on National Security charges, also posted a video that was recorded earlier of him singing the song “Mother, I did no wrong.”

In the video, he said the festival also reminded him of all the young men and women exiled or imprisoned due to the movement. However, he believed when people are united in their pursuit of justice and truth, a new family will be forged.

[Editor's note: “Mother, I have done no wrong” is a song written in remembrance of the 1989 June Fourth Massacre in Beijing. The title is a reference to a famous banner raised by the pro-democracy students who went on hunger strike in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

The lyrics sing:

“We want no one to define right or wrong.

We want no one to convict others at will."]

More Hong Kong Teachers Resign, as #WhiteTerror Sweeps Campuses

A wave of resignation is sweeping the Education sector in Hong Kong.

Apple Daily got in touch with one of these resigning teachers in the city. Ms Chan, a veteran secondary school teacher for over 10 years, said there was an atmosphere of terror in schools.

“We have been more cautious in our talk. We even stopped using social media all together. I genuinely believed there was freedom of speech. But in fact, there really are cases of warning due to online comments we've made.”

She revealed she won’t use current affairs as examples. “After all I don’t know what students think. I can be teaching about length, when I talked of the differences between miles and kilometres. But if I said 10 miles and 10 km are different*, would someone think I am mocking the police?”

*Editor's Note: On September 23, 2019, a police officer in Hong Kong ordered journalists to stand “10 miles” away, when he actually meant 10 metres.

Pooh-Pooh, not Winnie: Chinese Media Avoid #Xi Satire

In Shanghai #Disneyland, a little boy attacked a worker in #WinniethePooh costume. However, the parents of the boy has been impertinent and refused to apologise to the worker.

The video went viral on the #ChineseInternet, but it seems “Winnie the Pooh” is a bigger problem to China's media than violence or parenting, as they use “Pooh-pooh bear” instead in reporting the news.

[Editor's note: the cartoon figure Winnie the Pooh has been used as a satirical representation to the #CCP General Secretary #XiJinping and was thereby banned in China for a period of time.]
