An Anti-Epidemic Story Told By Media in China: 20-day-old Babies Ask For the Whereabouts of Their Mother

As the Wuhan Pneumonia outbreak continues, media in China have been publishing many articles based on 'heart-warming' 'real life' events to cheer up people in China.

In a recent news story released by ā€œHua Shang Baoā€ (čÆ商報), it praised a frontline nurse for leaving her family to combat against the Wuhan Pneumonia in Xijing Hospital, just 20 days after she gave birth to her twins. According to the article, her twins boys asked their father ā€œWhereā€™s mum?ā€ after she left home for work.

The article triggered discussion online, as people have been commenting and questioning how come the 20-day-old babies would be able to talk. The newspaper later apologised and promised that they would be careful next time.

The 36-year-old Chow is a lawyer by profession. The group has been the organizer of June 4th candlelight vigil in Hong Kong since 1990, to commemorate the victims of the 1989 #TiananmenMassacre in Beijing and comdemn the #ChineseCommunistParty for the brutal crackdown.

June 4, 2021 marks 32 years since the #ChineseCommunistParty government ordered the military to crack down on the pro-democracy civilians, mainly students, on Beijing's #TiananmenSquare in 1989.

The annual #CandlelightVigil held since 1990 in Hong Kong's Victoria Park has been banned for the second year by the Hong Kong Police.

At around 14:45 on June 4, 2021, the Hong Kong police cited the #PublicSecurityOrdinance and blocked six football fields, one basketball court, the central lawn and the running trail in Victoria Park.

The video captured how the police cordonned off the park's foodball field as early as at 14:00. More than 20 police vehicles and over 100 officers were also sighted near the park.

On the same day, the police has arrested two civilians, including the vice-chairperson of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, Chow Hang-tung, for allegedly promoting the commemorative event in social media.

7,000-strong #Police Deployment to Suppress Annual #TiananmenMassacre #Vigil in Hong Kong

32 years ago on June 4, 1989, in Beijing, the #ChineseCommunistParty government ordered a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy civilians on the Tiananmen Square. The military used tanks and fired live rounds, brutally killing and injuring countless civilians in the PRC's capital.

2021 marks 32 years after the Massacre which is still denied by the #CCP.

After cordonning off Victoria Park, the city's largest park in the urban area and the venue for the annual Tiananmen Massacre #CandlelightVigil at around 14:00, the Hong Kong police at 17:28 blocked all three cross-harbour tunnels by setting up road block and intercepting vehicles, resulting in huge traffic chaos.

Uncannily, today the streets of Hong Kong see at least two police armoured tanks and one water cannon vehicle, to suppress the commemorative event that the police has already banned.

Hong Kong Pro-democracy Trade Unions Commemorate CCP-'Suicided' #LiWangYang for Fighting Against Totalitarian Power

Video: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/29988

On June 6, 2021, the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (#HKCTU), a pro-democracy labour rights group, held a memorial for Chinese dissident Li Wangyang (1950-2012) who passed away on the day 9 years ago in 2012.

After being jailed by the Chinese authorities for 21 years, Li who had become blind and nearly deaf by then was found dead in a hospital room. The #ChineseCommunistParty (#CCP) government initially claimed that Li had "committed suicide".

Li's sudden death -- which took place just a few days after he in an interview called for the vindication of the 1989 June 4th #TiananmenMassacre -- had stirred up outcry in Hong Kong and abroad. The real cause of his death remained in the shadow.

The HKCTU organized a commemorative event to pay tribute to Li's perseverance in fighting against the regime.

#ChowHangTung, vice chairperson of the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China who was arrested by the Hong Kong police on the morning of June 4, 2021, joined the memorial on bail.

Chow said, "The regime does not win even by imprisoning us. As long as we manage to reinforce the movement during the process, we are not losing."

China State Media Enlists Overseas #KOL and University Students to Promote the Chinese Communist Party

//Chinaā€™s state TV station has been targeting British university campuses and offering students the chance to win thousands of pounds by becoming pro-Beijing social media influencers, The Times can reveal.

#CGTN had its broadcasting licence revokedand was taken off the air in Britain in February after an investigation by Ofcom, the media regulator, found that it was editorially controlled by the #ChineseCommunistParty.

The network has since launched a ā€œ#MediaChallengersā€ campaign to recruit internet influencers and vloggers globally, some of whom will promote China and counter western narratives that damage its image.

Successful applicants can win up to $10,000 and secure part-time or full-time jobs at CGTN, according to promotional documents.

At least six students at the University of Leeds and one at the University of Manchester have signed up to the campaign, The Times has found...

Hannah Bailey, an expert on Chinese digital disinformation at the Oxford Internet Institute, said: ā€œIf we have western social media influencers reading out Chinaā€™s official line on particular issues, then domestic audiences might believe the Chinese Communist Party is admired by international audiences.ā€ She said the CGTN campaign was ā€œpart of a broader trend that weā€™ve seen of China trying to increase its influence among university campusesā€.//

Civilian Reportedly Stabbed Himself After Injuring a Police

The annual July 1 march is a pro-democracy demonstration that took place every year in Hong Kong since the 1997 handover. This year's rally was, however, banned by the police.

The day in 2021 marks the 24th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover and the 100th year since the establishment of the #ChineseCommunistParty.

The day in Hong Kong starts with the police's heavy deployment across the territory: Victoria Park was cordoned off; civilians were stopped and searched; shoppers were interrupted as police entered shopping mall; and at least 11 pro-democracy students were arrested for "distributing seditious material".

At around 22:00 in Causeway Bay, a man reportedly wounded a policeman and himself with a knife. The man passed away at around 23:20. The policeman was conscious when sent to the hospital.

Police encircled the shoppers' district to intercept civilians and journalists until midnight.

#ChrisPatten on How #CCP Changed #HongKong: "Theyā€™ve broken their word, as Iā€™m afraid they do regularly"

The last UK governor of Hong Kong, #lChris Patten, blames the #ChineseCommunistParty for the city's malaise.

Patten, 78, who holds the title Baron Patten of Barnes and serves as chancellor of the #UniversityofOxford, spoke the Amelia Loi of RFA Cantonese about the changes in Hong Kong as the July 1 25th anniversary of the #handover approaches.

In the interview, Patten was asked to assess the changes in Hong Kong in the 25 years since the handove. Patten said, "Hong Kong was an exceptionally successful community ā€“ā€“the eighth largest trading community in the world and we never had the sort of demonstrations which have affected Hong Kong in the last few years. I had very much hoped it would continue as long as possible and the Chinese had promised that it would continue for 50 years. Theyā€™ve broken their word, as Iā€™m afraid they do regularly. They break their word. They break international treaties whenever it suits them. And I think thatā€™s happening again this time."

Patten also said, "the fact that the independence movement has grown in Hong Kong is an indication of how badly China has behaved and how little people actually trust China today. Itā€™s an extraordinary thing that so few people are actually proud of Hong Kong being part of China now. Thereā€™s a great sense of Hong Kong citizenship, and thereā€™s a great sense that people are Hong Kongers but only a small number think of themselves as Chinese."

HK Authorities Propose Real Name Registration and #HealthCode System like China's

Hong Kong's Secretary for Heath #LoChungMau said on July 11, 2022 that the government had plans to introduce a three-colour ā€˜health codeā€™ system in the city, bringing the app in line with China's system.

It would be an additional function to #LeaveHomeSafe, the government's COVID contact-tracing app. Lo mentioned that reference was sought from the health code systems used China. He also claimed that it was important to implement real name registration.

[Editor's note: Since the LeaveHomeSafe app has been made compulsory by the authorities in Hong Kong, many citizens expressed concerns over its privacy issues. The health code system in China has been long regarded as a #MassSurveillance campaign of the #ChineseCommunistParty government.]

Hong Kong's ā€œNational Education Calendarā€ suggests discussing #ChineseCommunistParty development and watching three "patriotic anti-Japanese" films a year

In a letter to all primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, the Education Bureau (#EDB) "strongly recommended" schools to "fully and systematically" implement learning activities for #NationalSecurityEducation.

The bureau attached a calendar of "important dates" on the national education curriculum, as well as suggested learning activities for each. These recommendations include watching patriotic or anti-Japanese war movies on three memorial dates related to the anti-Japanese war; holding memorial ceremonies on "mourning day for Nanjing Massacre Victims"; celebrating the "102nd Anniversary of the founding of the #CCP" with discussions on the Party's development, etc.

The EDB had also made it mandatory for all primary and secondary schools to fly the Chinese flag on all school days, as well as to hold a weekly flag-raising ceremony, complete with singing the Chinese national anthem. Secretary of Education Christine Choi says that, as the youth is the future pillars of society, schools must instill in students the concept of the nation, as well as national identity and pride, in order to develop them into a new generation of "knowledgeable, responsible youths who love the country and love Hong Kong".

[Editor's notes: Many China-produced television dramas and films about fighting the Japanese during World War 2 are characterized by their nationalistic nature. They are also known for "over-the-top violence and implausible plot events." For more information, check out this report by Hong Kong Free Press:

Hong Kong Schools Schedule National Security Education Activities, Mainland Exchange Tours

Following the Education Bureau's (#EDB) push to increase emphasis on "Citizenship and National Security Education", many Hong Kong schools have scheduled numerous activities around patriotic topics.

Hong Kong's ā€œNational Education Calendarā€ suggests discussing #ChineseCommunistParty development and watching three "patriotic anti-Japanese" films a year

According to the "Primary School Profiles 2022" published by the EDB in September, these activities include exchange trips with schools in mainland China and quiz competitions. Out of the 500-plus primary schools in Hong Kong, 59 will be organizing flag-raising teams this year.

HKFEW Wong Cho Bau School, run by the pro-Beijing Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers (#HKFEW), plans to establish exchange tours with sister schools in mainland China. The school aims to "deepen the students' knowledge of the history and culture of the motherland" through poetry reading, studying Chinese music and water painting.

Alliance Primary School in Kowloon Tong, ranked among the top primary schools in the city, will host a "Life in the Mainland Experience Tour" in primary year 5, "to let students gain a deeper understanding of student life in poorer areas, and to learn to give and be thankful". ELCHK Hung Hom Lutheran Primary School will have "scholarship tours", sending students abroad on exchanges with sister schools in places such as Canada and Beijing, so they could learn more about the world and the motherland. Several schools belonging to the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals will also participate in the EDB's mainland exchange program.

Many schools have followed the EDB's suggested calendars and planned events on "important dates". ELCHK Faith Love Lutheran School explains: "Through activities such as Nanjing Massacre memorial day, constitution day, flag-raising ceremonies, and Speeches under the National Flag, students will learn National Security Education, and develop their concept of their country and respect for rule of law."

[editor's note: "Speeches under the National Flag" is a routine part of flag-raising ceremonies in China's schools, featuring speeches by teachers and outstanding students, as well as individuals deemed "model workers" by the Communist Party. The practice is prescribed under China's National Flag Law, so that students from kindergarten onward could "develop a sense of duty to love the country."]

In addition to events on "important dates", many schools are integrating national security education into their regular curriculum. Diocesan Girls' Junior School and SKH Chi Fu Chi Nam Primary School are among the schools who stated this intention.
