After her first stint as a foreign judge on Hong Kong’s highest court, Beverley McLachlin was adamant the city’s judiciary remained independent, despite mounting pressure from Beijing.
That was late 2019. A lot has happened in the enclave since the former Supreme Court of Canada chief justice finished her first assignment there.
China imposed a draconian new national security law, ushering in a more repressive era that has seen authorities effectively shut down a pro-democracy newspaper, arrest opposition politicians and even seize children’s books they considered seditious.

Gong Lijiao, a Chinese shot-put player, gained a gold medal in shot-put in the Tokyo Olympics. However, the US player Raven Saunders, who gained the silver medal, received more attention from international media.
Saunders raised her arms high with a cross on the podium, voicing out for all people who are fighting for injusticr in the world. The Olympic Committee does not allow athletes to promote political messages on the podium. Raven Saunders was the first athlete to violate the rules in this Olympics. It is unknown what punishment she would face.
Saunders, aged 25, is black, a member of the LGBTQ community and suffers from depression. She said that the intersection on the cross of her arms represented the gathering place of all suppressed people. She also stated that the action was for "all people who are fighting around the world but without a platform to voice out".

Aishan was arrested based on a Red Notice issued by Interpol, an organization that brings together police forces from 194 countries. A Red Notice is an electronic alert published by Interpol at the request of a member state and circulated among law enforcement worldwide. Improvements in technology have led to a surge in Red Notices in recent years.

Hong Kong court quashes decision to enforce reporting ban on activist’s national security case in landmark ruling
Reporting restrictions on proceedings regarding the transfer of criminal cases to the High Court must be lifted if the defendant makes such a request, a Hong Kong court has ruled. The landmark judgement, which could extend to cases prosecuted under the national security law, came after activist Chow Hang-tung challenged a magistrate’s decision to retain reporting restrictions in a national security case.
In a ruling published on Tuesday, High Court Judge Alex Lee said that magistrates had no say in whether to lift reporting restrictions on committal proceedings if the accused had applied to do so.

In a letter to all primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, the Education Bureau (#EDB) "strongly recommended" schools to "fully and systematically" implement learning activities for #NationalSecurityEducation.
The bureau attached a calendar of "important dates" on the national education curriculum, as well as suggested learning activities for each. These recommendations include watching patriotic or anti-Japanese war movies on three memorial dates related to the anti-Japanese war; holding memorial ceremonies on "mourning day for Nanjing Massacre Victims"; celebrating the "102nd Anniversary of the founding of the #CCP" with discussions on the Party's development, etc.
The EDB had also made it mandatory for all primary and secondary schools to fly the Chinese flag on all school days, as well as to hold a weekly flag-raising ceremony, complete with singing the Chinese national anthem. Secretary of Education Christine Choi says that, as the youth is the future pillars of society, schools must instill in students the concept of the nation, as well as national identity and pride, in order to develop them into a new generation of "knowledgeable, responsible youths who love the country and love Hong Kong".

In an article uploaded to its website on August 2, 2022, the Education Bureau (#EDB) explained the government's official version of history, saying that the ceremony on 1st July 1997 was not a “handover of Hong Kong” but a “transfer of sovereignty”. The education bureau argues that denying Hong Kong being a former British colony doesn’t mean it rejects Hong Kong’s history of being occupied by Britain, but stresses that the word “colony” was inappropriate.
