Street busker arrested for singing “Do You Hear the People Sing”

Street busker Oliver Ma, of Chinese-Filipino descent, was surrounded by police officers while busking in Central on August 8. He was arrested when he sang “Do You Hear the People Sing”. Legislative Council Member, Ted Hui, said on Facebook that Oliver Ma was charged for obstructing police, and he has contacted a team of lawyers to follow up.

Oliver Ma was seen in online videos dressed in a black and white striped shirt and sang the English version of “Glory to Hong Kong” on Theater Lane, Central, while four police officers observed nearby. After a while, when Oliver Ma sang “Do You Hear the People Sing”, the other police officers moved forward to surround him and turned off his speaker. A citizen filming the incident asked the police, “What crime did he commit?” when Oliver Ma was in handcuffs.

Previously on July 28, Oliver Ma was arrested on suspicion of criminal intimidation, alleging that he argued with a 65-year-old woman on the street in Central because of noise problems. He was released on bail pending the investigation. He explained the incident on his Facebook, stating that the old woman suddenly snatched away his microphone stand while he was performing, and kicked his guitar case on the ground. Police arrested him on suspicion of criminal intimidation against the old lady, even though they did not any record voice or video evidence of him doing so. He denied having committed any crimes, believing that he was a victim of false accusations.

He suspected that his latest arrest was the police punishing him for his persistence in singing “Glory to Hong Kong”.

US High School's Orchestra Plays “Glory to Hong Kong” in Support of Hongkongers

“Glory to Hong Kong” is one of the most representative songs in Hong Kong's Anti-Extradition Law movement.

However, after the forceful enactment of the National Security Law (#NSL),
the song was accused of violating the law by inciting the subversion of the state power, overthrowing the authority, etc.

Hongkongers have to codify the lyrics into numbers such as “5201314” to express the original lyrics that read “May glory be to Hong Kong”.

While Hongkongers are forbidden by the authorities to sing the song in public, a symphony orchestra of a high school in the U.S. performed the song “Glory to Hong Kong” in their virtual concert on YouTube. More than ten thousand people have viewed the video.

Mark Aubel, the music teacher of the school and the conductor of the orchestra, spoke of the most touching moment when his students said, if Hongkongers cannot sing the song anymore, then “we can play it for them [Hongkongers], Mr Aubel”.

Aubel said, "The wonderful aspect for my students and me is that we have connected with the people of Hong Kong through music." Aubel and his students didn’t expect the virtual concert to have drawb so much attention. They hoped Hongkongers could feel the warmth.

Hong Kong Old Man Tours Pro-democracy 'Yellow' Shops on Lamma Island and Sings Protest Anthem --“All I can do is sing”

As morning rises on the weekend, the sounds of an acoustic guitar flowed on Lamma Island. Street musician Jim Yeung, responding to “Yellow Shops Thanksgiving Day”, puts on a yellow ribbon, and toured every pro-democracy 'yellow' shop on the island with the anthem “Glory to Hong Kong”.

Yeung, though 63 years old, still retained his strength after singing got 5-6 hours. Passersby stopped and sang together, cheering up atmosphere.

Defiant Hongkongers display unyielding support to pro-democracy fights against tyranny rule

Ever since the CCP’s forceful imposition of National Security Law in Hong Kong, singing the anti-ELAB theme song, “Glory to Hong Kong” in public is mostly construed a red-line should not be crossed.

During the screening and while “Glory to Hong Kong” was played, many spectators raised their mobile phones with flashlights turned on, others raised their hands, showing “Five demand not one less”, chanting slogans after the song ended.

Pro-Hong Kong Rallies Take Place Across the World on Protest Anniversary

On June 12, 2021, rallies in support of Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement took place in different cities across the world.

These included but were not limited to Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth in Australia; Auckland and Christchurch in New Zealand; Tokyo in Japan; Seoul in South Korea; London, Reeding and Liverpool in the United Kingdom.

In #London alone, there were three assemblies. At least one of them was attended by over 1,000 including exiled activist and former lawmaker #NathanLaw.

The rally in #Sydney was attended by hundreds including former lawmaker #TedHui. Hui called on overseas Hongkongers to speak up as much as they can and to support the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.

In #Tokyo, over 250 Hongkongers and Japanese, dressed in black and holding umbrellas, marched from Shinjuku central park to different main streets downtown, attracting many onlookers.

The "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times" flags flew under the sky of all these different cities. The protest anthem "#GlorytoHongKong", which has been banned by Hong Kong authorities, was also heard in the air.

#Hongkongers create human chain and cheer “May Glory to Hong Kong” amidst white terror and #CCP grip

In Hong Kong, on New Year's eve (December 31, 2021), many citizens went up to the #LionRock to count down to the year 2022. Among them, some brought neon light signs that read “GLORY HK” and “FREE HK”.

While some citizens on the site were occupied taking pictures, others lighted up their handphones to form a human chain. Just like the pro-democracy “Hong Kong Way” demonstration in 2019, a line of human chain was soon created, displaying the outline of Lion Rock with the light from the mobile phones.

Together Hongkongers counted down and cheered “May glory to Hong Kong” to welcome 2022.

On the hilltop, some elderly walked by and uttered words of encouragement to the youngsters, “hang on,” “don’t give up”, while others passed on drinks to them.

Down the hill, some citizens raised laser pointers and pointed towards the hill top to echo and show their support.

[Editors' notes: Inspired by the Baltic human chain in 1989, the “Hong Kong Way” was organized by pro-democracy HongKongers in August 2019 during the #AntiELAB Movement.

The human chain expresses Hongkongers' yearning for freedom and basic human rights. Tens of thousands of Hongkongers lined up on pavements, overpasses, waterfronts and parks, snaking a line of nearly 30 miles (50km) long through Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.

Revolution of Our Times Shown in Cinemas in 5 Canadian Cities

Although #RevolutionOfOurTimes" is barred from screening in Hong Kong, a Canada-based organisation took it to Canada for screening.

The award-winning documentary by Hong Kong Film director #KiwiChow is now showing in 5 Canadian cities, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria, beginning February 11.

CanMen, the group who organized the screening, said they originally planned only 4 screening sessions, but were overwhelmed by the public response as tickets were sold out in hours. After negotiating with cinemas, they added an additional 10 some screening sessions.

At Cineplex Odeon International Village in Vancouver, a small Lennon Wall was set up outside the theater for audiences to write down their feelings and responses.

The documentary took audiences back to three years ago, when the Anti-ELAB movement broke out in Hong Kong. Emotional sobbing can be heard in the theater throughout the showing.

At the end of the movie, audiences responded with thunderous applause. They sang "#GloryToHongKong," a popular protest song, and chanted "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times."

The documentary will also be shown in Taipei, Taiwan from February 25 onward.

"Glory HK": #Hongkongers Raise Glowing Signs amid Storm Clouds on Lion Rock

In Hong Kong, a group of pro-democracy citizens braved the heavy rain and hiked to the top of the #LionRock on the evening of June 9, 2022.

On the mountain, they displayed the light signs that spelled "Glory HK", to commemorate the third anniversary of the 2019 June 9 #AntiExtradition protest march.

When the group reached the summit, however, the hill was shrouded by dense clouds and heavy rain, with a thunderstorm warning from the weather observatory. After discussing their options, the group decided to carry through and set up the sign while they waited for the clouds to clear. Their patience was rewarded after waiting for over an hour; the clouds cleared for a brief moment, and Hong Kong's city lights come into view behind their glowing sign.

Speaking to a reporter, the organizer likened the weather atop the mountain to the outlook for Hong Kong's future: full of dark clouds, but there will be light for those who hold on to the end.

"The oppression keeps Hongkongers from speaking our minds, and even rational debates on the Internet risk violating the authority's red line; however, the beliefs of Hongkongers 3 years ago surely remain engraved in our hearts, and they will never change," said one of the participants.

Man who Posted Video of Olympic Gold Ceremony with "Glory to Hong Kong" Now Charged with "Insulting National Anthem of China"

When Hong Kong fencer #CheungKaLong won a #GoldMedal at the #TokyoOlympics in July 2021, many Hongkongers were overjoyed. Among them, a 27-year-old man published a video of the medal ceremony on the Internet, replacing the audio of China's national anthem with "Glory to Hong Kong," an anthem of the 2019 #AntiELAB movement.

One year later, the man was now charged with "insulting the national anthem of China" and "insulting the emblem of the Hong Kong SAR."

The case was heard in the Eastern Magistrates on July 22, 2022. The man was not represented by any counsel. The magistrate accepted the man's request to postpone the hearing to September 2, 2022, so that the man can look for a lawyer.

Hong Kong Man Arrested for Sedition Outside British Consulate after Playing Songs while Mourning the Queen

Large crowds of Hongkongers gathered outside the British Consulate in Central on Monday evening, as the Queen's state funeral took place in London at the same time. Many lit candles in remembrance of the late queen.

One man brought his harmonica and allegedly performed various songs, including #GodSaveTheQueen and #GloryToHongKong. This reportedly caused a commotion in the gathered crowd, and the police arrested him after around half an hour.

Police announced today (20th) that the man was suspected to have taken actions with seditious intent, and is currently under arrest for investigation.

Hongkongers Gathering for Queen's Funeral Sing "Glory to Hong Kong"; Police Arrests Harmonica Player

On Monday evening in Hong Kong, as the Queen's funeral was about to take place in London, many Hongkongers gathered outside the British consulate to mourn the late Queen and watch the procession on live stream. Many brought flowers and candles to add to the growing assemblage of tributes outside the consulate, which by now had taken up a large portion of the sidewalk.

A man was seen playing his harmonica on the opposite side of the street in the evening; the crowd sang along enthusiastically to familiar tunes including #GloryToHongKong, the unofficial protest anthem of 2019. The song had been rarely heard since the #NationalSecurityLaw came into effect and it was banned in schools, although the government had avoided explicitly calling it illegal.

After the man had finished playing, the crowd continue to sing as they waved cell phone lights. They finished with chants of "God save the Queen" and "Hongkongers add oil", recalling the city's glory days under the Queen's rule, when residents enjoyed prosperity as well as the freedom to speak their minds without fear of repercussions from the authorities.

Police later arrived and detained the harmonica player behind cordon lines, drawing the ire of the gathered crowd. Consulate staff also came out to intervene with the police, but the harmonica player was eventually arrested and taken away on a police van.

Hong Kong protest anthem played at Rugby Sevens series in Korea

The Korea Rugby Union, the local operator of the second leg of the Asia Rugby Sevens Series held in Korea between Nov. 12 and 13, apologized for playing "Glory to Hong Kong," a protest anthem widely sung during the 2019-2020 pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, instead of the Chinese national anthem, "March of the Volunteers," during the men's final round between Hong Kong and Korea held in Incheon, Korea on Sunday.

The Hong Kong government chastised Asia Rugby Monday morning about what happened and asked for an "in-depth investigation." However, the remarks of the Korean operator contradict those of the Hong Kong government.

Stressing that playing the Hong Kong pro-democracy protest anthem was "simply a mistake" by the Korea Rugby Union and that the Korean union immediately announced the mistake in the stadium and delivered an official apology to the Chinese and Hong Kong teams, a public relations representative from the Korean organization told The Korea Times Monday that "We ask each country to submit national anthems to play, but failed to get one (from the Hong Kong team)."

The person added that "our staff saved 'the Hong Kong national anthem' listed on the top of a search engine in the file folder named, 'Hong Kong.'"

The person continued that the Korea Rugby Union was later informed by Asia Rugby that the organization should play China's national anthem for the Hong Kong team but failed to delete the mistakenly saved file and delivered it to the broadcasting team. The official added that a staff member of the broadcasting team played the song in the file when Hong Kong made it to the final.

Also, the person said that the organizer then played the Chinese national anthem for the Hong Kong team during the award ceremony, after Hong Kong won the final.

Some pro-democracy restaurants in Hong Kong made the issue into a promotional event, giving those with Korean passports in Hong Kong discounts and some coupons for what happened.

Cafe de JarGor, a local food restaurant chain in Hong Kong that is known to support the anti-government movement and is vocal about anti-government issues, posted on Instagram that they will give a 50 percent discount to Korean passport holders that visit its restaurants for dinner today with the hashtag, "#thankyou" in Korean.

Protests has erupted in multiple cities across China, including Urumqi, Shanghai, and Wuhan.

Some protesters even chanted "CCP, step down" and "Xi Jinping, step down". Others recited the slogans from Beijing's lone protester at Sitong Bridge last month:

No lies, we want dignity
No cultural revolution, we want reforms
No dictator, we want the vote
No more being slaves, we are citizens

Videos and photos of the protests are shared by liberal Chinese netizens. Some had hashtagged their posts with "Liberate China, Revolution of Our Times".

Some protesters were seen holding up blank sheets of A4 paper, devoid of any slogans. Some had written messages on theirs: "What's so scary about blank paper?" "I'm a Chinese youth, not foreign powers".

Shanghai police has reportedly begun arresting protesters on the streets. The crowds responded with resistance as they retreated.

On the Clubhouse platform, protesters hosted a live feed to show the situation around them. They urged their audience to share their message, just as Iranian protesters did, so that the world can see their efforts.

Nearly a thousand people watched the live feed, some leaving comments that they should emulate Hong Kong protesters' "#BeWater" tactics to avoid casualties. Others predicted Shanghai will be under a heavy curfew by tomorrow. One commenter shared a Mandarin version of Hong Kong's protest anthem "#GloryToHongKong".

One of the hosts said that the most precious lesson she learned from the Hong Kong protests is "#DoNotSplit". She called on other protesters not to criticize each other, but instead respect each other's decisions.
