Broadcasters urged to cancel plans to cover #Beijing #WinterOlympics

//Some of the worldā€™s largest broadcasters including American network #NBC are being asked by human rights groups to cancel plans to cover next yearā€™s Winter Olympics in Beijing. The Winter Games are scheduled to open on Feb. 4, 2022.

The request comes in an open letter from rights groups representing minorities in China, including #Uyghurs, #Tibetans, #HongKong residents and others.

The letter, obtained by the Associated Press, was sent Tuesday to NBC Universal chief executive officer Jeff Shell and other international broadcast executives. NBC is paying $7.75 billion for the rights to the next six Olympics and works closely as a partner with the Switzerland-based International Olympic Committee.

Those payments are estimated to account for up to 40% of the IOCā€™s total income. The letter says the broadcasters risk ā€œbeing complicitā€ in the ā€œworsening human rights abusesā€ in China.
The letter comes just days after the delayed Summer Olympics and Paralympics wrapped up in Tokyo, putting the focus on the IOC and its choice of Beijing.//

Czech TerezĆn Memorial Exhibits Portraits of Hong Kong #PoliticalPrisoners

A painting installation by Hong Kong artist #LorettaLau depicting some Hong Kong political prisoners will open on 7 October 2021 in TerezĆn Memorial, a former #NAZI concentration camp in the #CzechRepublic.

Lau was invited to take part in Fortress 1980 exhibition and human rights conference. Titled ā€˜The Cellsā€™, the paintings are installed in solitary confinement cells, a stark reminder of ā€˜the nature of the dictators has never changed,ā€™ said Lau.

'The Cells' features 13 political prisoners under the Hong Kong National Security Law, including Jimmy Lai Chi-ying, Tonyee Chow Hang-tung, Tony Chung Hon-lam, Agnes Chow Ting, and more.

A faint portrait of each prisoner is painted on a piece of white door curtain installed at the entrance to a solitary confinement cell.

To have a clear view of the portraits, visitors must walk into the cells. Looking from inside out, the images will be lit up by the light outside.

The design aims to arouse the visitorā€™s empathy with those imprisoned. ā€˜I hope by having them walking into the cells, they will have a direct and personal experience of how being confined feels like,ā€™ said Loretta.

*Note: The artist Loretta Lauwill stage a live performance at TerezĆn Memorial at 5pm Thursday Oct 7 (HKT 2300). She will use her movements and voices to commemorate the countless people who suffered in the concentration camps, to resonate between the tragedies in the past and the happening misfortunes.

The performance will be streamed live at: https://youtu.be/IZ6b-KPctOk

London Artists: Salute to those suffered under totalitarianism

In the face of injustice, people fight back with different ways and find ways to make their voices heard. While performing in London, a group of artists said they are fortunate to live on a free land where they can still follow their hearts to pursuit justice.

On November 6, 2021, a social movement art platform #Artvocate carried out a mobile exhibition. Some artists were blind folded, representing the citizens being ripped off freedom. Without fear, they took to the street to show their defiance and strong will.

Saluting Hong Kong pro-democracy protestors, the artists showed lines of umbrella in their performance. Tribute was also paid to those fought against the authoritarian rule in Myanmar.

Australia set to pass new laws that provide powers to sanction human rights abusers

//Laws allowing Australia to slap sanctions on human rights abusers, cyber attackers and corrupt officials are set to be enshrined after passing the Senate.

The so-called Magnitsky style laws, which would allow the Australian government to directly target sanctions against individuals or entities, passed the upper house on Wednesday.

The reforms would allow financial sanctions to be imposed against perpetrators of serious human rights violations - without having to establish a country-specific approach.

Labor Senator Kimberley Kitching - who has advocated for the laws to be adopted - said the new powers were needed to punish human rights abusers and hold criminals to account.

"In a modern age of regimes run by the dregs of humanity (who) torture and jail and murder their own citizens ... if you believe in the dignity of human beings you can't allow such evil to go on unchallenged," she said.

The laws will be reviewed by a joint parliamentary committee after three years.//

#Hongkongers Rally in #Manchester: "You Can't Kill Us All"

On December 11, 2021 Hongkongers in Manchester initiated a rally in support of human rights. The rally was titled ā€œYOU CANā€™T KILL US ALL,ā€ symbolizing the solidarity of people in pursuit of freedom and democracy despite political oppression.

The assembly was attended by around 100 participants, including the members of #AmnestyInternational, Tibetan activists, former councillors from Hong Kong and prodemocracy activists in exile.

A two-feet-tall replica of the ā€œ#PillarOfShame," commemorating the victims of the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacre in Beijing, was exhibited. The original statue made by a Danish sculptor has been displayed in the University of Hong Kong (#HKU) for years. The university management's recent plan to remove the statue has sparked public outcry in Hong Kong and abroad.

Overseas #Hongkongers Commemorate the Third Anniversary of #AntiExtradition Protests

On June 12, 2022, pro-democracy Hongkongers in Japan gathered to commemorate the three-year mark of the #AntiELAB protests that started in Hong Kong in June 2019. The day in 2019 marks the first police-civilian class near the Legislative Council building, as the authorities pushed forward the extradition to China policy.

In Shibuya, Tokyo in 2022, over a hundred people took part in the demonstration, waving flags and raising yellow umbrellas.

The participants also brought flowers to pay tribute to those who died during the protests. The "yellow raincoat man" who committed suicide on June 15, 2019 and university student #AlexChow who fell to his death during police operation were just some of them.

Overseas Hongkongers Commemorate the 3rd Anniversary of Anti-ELAB Movement

In view of the political suppression in Hong Kong, overseas Hongkongers showed solidarity and carried on the "be water" spirit in their respective countries.

On June 12, 2022, Hongkongers across the world initiated commemorative events for the 2019 Anti-extradition Protests in over 43 cities in 11 countries across the world. In Australia, activities such as silent protests, demonstrations, seminars, screenings and exhibitions were held in six major cities.

Though oceans away from their homeland, participants chanted familiar slogans as they once did on the streets of Hong Kong: "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times" and "Hongkongers, add oil!"
