Police Claim to Have Authority to Remove Masks From Anyone;
Barrister: Police order to kneel is considered demeaning

The Police stated that under the Anti-Mask Law, officers have the authority to demand anyone to remove their masks, face paint, and any other face covering items. Not complying with the demands would result in a verbal warning and the forceful removal of facial coverings. The police reserve the right to arrest any offenders.

Additionally, regarding the police operation in Tuen Mun yesterday (Oct 30), Barrister Anson Wong Yu Yat explained that unless the possession of weapon is suspected, there is no reasonable ground for the police to search anyone and demanding them to kneel or with hands on their back.

It is considered demeaning when the police demand citizens to kneel.

The High Court issues order sought by Secretary of Justice to protect pro-government judicial officials

Following a similar injunction protecting police officer, the High Court granted an interim injunction to restrain members of the public from unlawfully doxxing judicial officers as well as their families. The order will remain in effect until November 13. Those in breach may subject to investigation for civil contempt of court, which could result in imprisonment.

Lawyers have broadly welcomed the injunction, Civic Party member and lawmaker of legal sector, Dennis Kwok Wing-hang, however, expressed concern over its scope. Kwok worried that citizens, when disapproving a ruling or criticizing a judge might unintentionally break the law.

Hong Kong’s Blueprint Changes Protests Around the World

//Social dissent these days has a new catchphrase: “Be Water”. Inspired by a quote from martial arts icon Bruce Lee, the phrase was repurposed by Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement during their campaign against the 2019 extradition bill. The concept calls for movements to take on an amorphous, leaderless and fast-flowing approach.

Thanks to live-streaming on social media, demonstrators share vital information – such as the whereabouts of police – to avoid a crackdown. The strategy was tested in Hong Kong and soon implemented halfway across the world by Catalan demonstrators, determined to defend the region’s freedoms from the central Spanish government...

“Shapeless” and “leaderless” are quickly becoming the new keywords for social movements. And it looks like there cannot be one without the other. Not only is lack of leadership essential to fluidity (protesters cannot just assemble and split if they are following someone’s directives), but it also allows movements to avoid government crackdowns.

As Hong Kong-based journalist Anthony Dapiran has observed, “With no obvious leader, there’s no one to imprison.” Even Black Lives Matter, despite the heritage of civil rights leaders as charismatic as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, is now taking a leaderless approach to social action.//

Vote Now: Hong Kong Protesters' "Brick Arches" Roadblocks Nominated for Beazley Designs of the Year

The Design Museum in London is hosting the Beazley Designs of the Year. In the category "Transport", the ankle-high roadblock "Brick Arches" designed by Hong Kong protesters are shortlisted to the top 3 finalists.

The museum wrote the following description for the Brick Arches:

"Made from ordinary bricks, these small but powerful structures were used by Hong Kong protestors from the pro-democracy movement as roadblocks to slow down police vehicles...

Easier to make and more difficult to clear than ordinary roadblocks, they became widespread when the protests escalated in November 2019.

Designed by Hong Kong protestors."

Activists Preserve HK's Tiananmen Memorial Pillar in Digital 3D Model: "They Can't Silence Us All"

In October 2021, the University of Hong Kong (#HKU) demanded the Danish creator Jens Galschiøt to remove the statue which has been on display on campus since 1998.

An activist group had digitally scanned the #PillarofShame and made the 3D model publicly available, in an effort to preserve the statue commemorating the pro-democracy protesters killed during the 1989 Tiananmen massacre in Beijing.

Thre group "Lady Liberty HK" announced the release of the publicly accessible file in a Facebook post on October 29, 2021.

"The 3D file preserves details including every face on the statue, #JensGalschiøt's signature, the writings and plates on the base," said the post.

While Galschiøt, the statue's creator, had made similar pillars commemorating other ignominious events in other countries, all pillars are unique.

This 3D model therefore represents "THE Pillar of Shame that belongs to Hong Kong."

The original Pillar had been placed on permanent display inside Hong Kong University's campus since 1998. However, HKU had recently demanded its removal, a move that drew condemnation from civic groups worldwide, as well as Galschiot, the statue's creator and owner. He had called on Hong Kong citizens to, in the event that the statue is demolished, gather as many pieces as they could, so that it could be rebuilt elsewhere in the world.

Echoing the artist's call, the group Lady Liberty HK wrote: "If one day #HKU act in accomplice to Hong Kong Gov. and the CCP and removes the statue, anyone in the world can still view it online and recreate it."

The group takes its name from the 4m-tall statue of a Hong Kong protester, which it created and displayed during the 2019 Anti-ELAB Movement, but had been destroyed by unidentified individuals. The group had also published the model file for the statue; one 3D-printed replica is now preserved in the collections of the Museum of New Zealand.

Historic Boundary Marker Disappears from Streets of Kowloon

A historic boundary marker in Jordan, Hong Kong has been mysteriously removed.

History and architecture scholar Chan Tin-kuen first noticed the boundary stone, marked "KIL 7068" (short for "Kowloon Inland Lot") at the intersection of Nathan Road and Gascoigne Road in Hong Kong, had gone missing.

The government used this type of stone before the 1970s to demarcate land boundaries in Hong Kong. Its application as markers is superseded by geographic coordinates nowadays. The stones were not removed, however, and can still often be seen to this day. Sometimes, they are built into walls or next to buildings.

Secretary of Development Michael Wong Wai-lun wrote an article on these stones last year, describing them as carrying "great historical significance". The government has yet to comment on the stone's whereabouts. The stone's former location is behind a plastic cordon belonging to real estate company JLL. The company said that they did not remove the stone and that the cordon was for repair works nearby.

This stone was not the first boundary marker to be damaged or disappear entirely. In 2007, a boundary stone of Victoria City - covering the present-day area from Kennedy Town to Wanchai - was also removed and has not been found since. The remaining six other markers of Victoria City are listed by the government's Antiquities and Monuments Office as heritage sites and are protected under the Heritage Impact Assessment scheme.

However, the Antiquities Advisory Board had decided in 2017 to not assess a grading to the six remaining Victoria City markers, all of which are now over 100 years old.
