China Buys More Iranian and Venezuelan Oil, in a Test for Biden

China has sharply increased its imports of oil from Iran and Venezuela in a challenge to two Biden administration foreign-policy priorities, according to U.S. officials.

That trend is confirmed by other shipping trackers, some of which see those sales at 1 million barrels a day.

China is also increasingly flouting international sanctions on North Korea and is no longer trying to hide some of its smuggling activity as it seeks to help Pyongyang, U.S. officials said recently.

“The informal Chinese purchases have reduced the need to negotiate on oil sanctions” for Tehran, one Iran-focused U.S. official said.

Tesla cars banned from China's military complexes on security concerns -sources

The Chinese military has banned Tesla cars from entering its complexes, citing security concerns over cameras installed on the vehicles. The move is the latest sign of China’s growing scrutiny of the U.S. electric carmaker amid tensions with Washington.

Automakers have been equipping more vehicles with cameras and sensors that capture images of a car’s surroundings. Control of how those images are used and where they are sent and stored is a fast-emerging challenge for the industry and regulators around the world.

Tesla cars have several external cameras to assist drivers with parking, changing lanes and other features. Chief Executive Elon Musk has often spoken about the value of the data Tesla vehicles capture that can be used to develop autonomous driving.

China: Parents of missing Uyghur children describe horror of family separation

Amnesty International mentioned talked to parents who have been completely cut off from their children and cannot return to China due to the threat of being sent to a “re-education” internment camp.

The exiled families of Uyghur children held in state “orphanages” in the Chinese region of Xinjiang described the torment of being separated in the latest report published by Amnesty International.

“The tragedy of family separation in Xinjiang exposes the inhumanity of China’s efforts to control and indoctrinate Uyghurs and other Muslim ethnic groups,” Amnesty International Alkan Akad said.

Amnesty International calls for the Chinese government to provide full and unrestricted access to Xinjiang for UN human rights experts, independent researchers and journalists to conduct investigations about what is happening in the region.Meanwhile, the organization urges other governments to do everything they can to ensure that Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Chinese ethnic minorities resident in their countries are provided with assistance in trying to locate, contact, and reunite with their children.

Tiananmen Square, Uyghur Court: Tower Hamlets plans name changes in solidarity

The Chinese embassy is to be relocated to the East End of London, Tower Hamlets.

The councillors said they welcomed the relocation of the embassy from the West End but “we must continue to make clear where our own standards and principles apply”.

The motion which proposed to rename roads and buildings in the surrounding area of the site Tiananmen Square, Uyghur Court, Hong Kong Road and Tibet Hill was passed. This showed “support for the freedom and diversity of our borough”.

The repression of Uighur Muslims is particularly sensitive for Tower Hamlets, which has the highest proportion of Muslim residents (38%) of any borough.

Football fans clapped hands and chanted slogans such as, “rally support our fellow protesters till the end”, on at least four match days so far since the opening of the Premier League in Hong Kong in March 2021.

Trudeau condemns closed-door espionage trial of Canadian in China

Justin Trudeau has reacted angrily to the closed-door trial of a Canadian man detained in China for more than two years on espionage charges, dismissing it as “completely unacceptable”.

Businessman Michael Spavor, whose hearing finished after less than three hours on Friday, is one of two Canadians detained, in apparent retaliation for Canada’s arrest on a US extradition warrant of the Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou, and formally charged last June with spying.

#Russia Allegedly Move Thousands of #Ukrainians to Russia Against their Will

//An official in Mariupol on Saturday, March 19, 2022 accused Russian forces of having taken thousands of Ukrainians against their will across the border into Russia who he feared could be compelled into forced labor.

Russian forces have taken “between 4,000 and 4,500 #Mariupol residents forcibly across the border to Taganrog,” Pyotr Andryuschenko, an assistant to the city’s mayor, said, referring to a city in southwestern Russia. Given chaos in the city — ongoing fighting, the lack of cellphone and internet service — his claim could not be immediately independently verified, though it was supported by testimony from others who recently fled the city.//
