U.S. Secretary of Health Arrives in Taiwan on Air Force Two,
BBC: US-Taiwan Relations Reach a 41-year high

While China-US relations are deteriorating and have sanctioned each other, US-Taiwan relations become closer. The United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar, led a visiting delegation to Taiwan and arrived at Taipei Songshan Airport on Aug 9. He is the first United States cabinet-level official to visit Taiwan in six years. He is also the highest-ranking official visiting Taiwan since the cessation of diplomatic relations between the US and Taiwan in 1979.

The Boeing C-40B executive plane that arrived in Taiwan was Air Force Two with the American flag painted on the aircraft. Central News Agency (#CNA) of Taiwan pointed out that the United States attached great importance to Taiwan with a high-level attitude.

The high standards visit from the United States to Taiwan this time indicate that U.S.-Taiwan relations have escalated to a new high after the cessation of diplomatic relations in 1979.

Since Donald Trump has been the president of the United States, he directly telephoned Tsai Ing-wen and publicly called her the "President of Taiwan" on Twitter. In 2018, the two houses of Congress passed the Taiwan Travel Act. United States officials can visit Taiwan and meet with Taiwanese officials, and vice versa. Alex Azar was the first official to visit Taiwan under the act. In 2019, Taiwan officially changed the name of the Coordination Council for North American Affairs (#CCNAA) to the Taiwan Council for U.S. Affairs, which is equivalent to the United States Embassy in Taiwan.

Pompeo: Chinese Diplomats Banned from Visiting US Unis or Meeting US Officials Without Authorization

The US state secretary Mike Pompeo has issued a statement announcing that Chinese diplomats will need the US state department’s permission to visit American universities or meet with American officials. The statement said also that if the Chinese embassy or a Chinese consulate wishes to host a cultural event with more than 50 participants outside of its property, approval from the state department will also be needed. Pompeo added that the state department will take actions to ensure all the Chinese diplomatic missions’ official social media accounts are correctly identified as the accounts of the Chinese government.

Explaining the actions against the Chinese government’s social media accounts, the statement said that the US embassy is not given full access to Chinese social media and that Chinese citizens are prevented from using Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms.

At the beginning of the statement, Pompeo said that China has deviated significantly from diplomatic norms in making American diplomatic missions there immensely difficult. He also criticized the Chinese authorities’ vetting processes for being opaque and for preventing US diplomats from conducting normal operations and keeping in touch with Chinese citizens. He further pointed out that US diplomats often run into obstructions when organizing cultural events, formal meetings, and university visits.

The statement said in contrast, Chinese diplomats in the US have free access to American society. Pompeo notes that the new policy is a response to the limitations China has imposed on American diplomats over the years. It is hoped that the Chinese government will make improvements, he said. Should China lift the restrictions it has imposed on American diplomats, the statement added, the US is ready to respond in kind.

Canadian Foreign Ministry: Hong Kong authorities deny consular access to detainees with dual nationality

On 3 February, 2021, the Canadian Foreign Ministry revealed that Hong Kong has denied consular access to detainees with dual nationals in Hong Kong.

Five diplomats say, however, that consular access to dual nationals had largely been granted by local authorities since Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule more than two decades ago. That is now changing, the diplomats said.

Canada said it received a first notification of a Canadian dual-national prisoner in Hong Kong being required to declare their nationality on Jan 18, 2021. The consulate did not identify the prisoner nor the reason they were in jail.

“We are aware of more such incidences involving dual nationals of other countries,” Canadian foreign ministry spokeswoman Christelle Chartrand said, adding Ottawa had expressed its concern towards the Hong Kong government.

Canadians who wish to receive consular services should present themselves as Canadian to authorities at all times, she said.

“Who Is The Wolf? BTW, China Is Not A Lamb”: Tweet from Chinese Embassy Baffles Internet

As China continues flexing its muscles as part of its “wolf warrior diplomacy”, the Chinese Embassy in Ireland posted an enigmatic tweet inspired by Aesop’s fable of the wolf and the lamb. Published on 1 April, it began by asking rhetorically who the wolf was and went on to say that China was not a lamb to the confusion of the Internet. The tweet has since been deleted.

The fable originally tells the story of a lamb running into a wolf at a creek, where the wolf hurls various false charges against the lamb to justify its predation. When the lamb proves its innocence and refutes the accusations, the wolf gives up looking for an excuse and eats it straight away. The lesson is understood to be that there is no point appealing to reason in face of one as wickedly unreasonable as a wolf.

The tweet began with the question “Who is the wolf?” and went on to say that some had accused China of engaging in “wolf warrior diplomacy”. The embassy then noted how in the fable the wolf fabricates charges just so it can eat the lamb. Wrapping up the tweet, it wrote that “The wolf is the wolf, not the lamb” while remarking that “China is not a lamb”.

Canadian Foreign Minister Marc Garneau stated in the live broadcast at CTV Television Network on August 11 that the sentence is a lack of fairness and transparency. He also indicated that “We are known that arbitrary detention of China and a sham trial with a lack of transparency and with an unreasonable judgement do not match the International Law”.
