#HSBC Freezes Assets of the Good Neighbour North District Church

On December 7, 2020 in Hong Kong, the accounts of the Good Neighbour North District Church, pastor Mr. Chan Hoi Hing Roy, and his wife were frozen without prior notification nor justification provided.

As a registered charity (IR No.: 91/14411) since 2016, the Good Neighbour North District Church raised funds and received donations from all legally. The act of HSBC is allegedly a political retaliation by the authorities and a sign of the erosion of the credibility of the bank system in Hong Kong.

The Good Neighbour North District Church has their one and only one bank account at HSBC. According to the church, they did not manage to set up other account at non-China funded banks in Hong Kong.

The church has been providing services to the grassroots: The "Hostel for Homeless" has been offering 30 free hostel places in North Districts since 2014. Even the government's Social Welfare Department has approached the church several times during the coronavirus pandemic, hoping to look for accommodation for the homeless.

In 2019, the group “Safeguard Our Generation” under the church offers humanitarian aid to pro-democracy protestors. At the frontline, middle-aged and elderly volunteers from the church monitored police operation and try to prevent police brutality.

The Church condemns the HSBC for "exploiting the well-established independent financial system and sabotaging the benefits of individuals and groups of Hong Kong, as well as foreign investors within the territory".

At the same time, at least 3 banks in Hong Kong has frozen the accounts of the self-exiled former lawmaker Ted Hui, his parents and wife.

The Church concluded their ststement: "Hongkongers will demonstrate their determination in saying 'NO' to injustice with what they own in hand."

National Security Police Arrest At Least 8 Including 2 District Councillors for Allegedly Protesting on #CUHK Congregation Day

On the morning of Dec 7, 2020, Hong Kong police arrested at least 8 civilians, aged from 16 to 34, including students, alumni of Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), social workers and 2 district councillors Li Ka-yue (Sai Kung) and Eason Chan (Kwun Tong).

Chan and Li both graduated from the Department of Government and Public Admininstration. Another alumni Yeung Tsz-chun, who is a member of "Kickstart Wanchai" was also arrested by the National Security Police, who took away his ipad, phone, computer, CUHK staff card and name cards from his home.

The police claimed that their arrest was related to a pro-democracy protest that took place on the Congregation Day (Nov 19, 2020) on the CUHK campus. The police accused three non-CUHK students of "conspiring to separate the country" for chanting "pro-independence" slogans and waving flag.

Court Rejects Agnes Chow's Appeal Application,
Chow: "It is my honor to be able to participate in social movements
"

Before her 24th birthday on Nov 27, 2020, Agnes Chow wrote an open letter. The following excerpt tells of her conviction in fighting for freedom:

"In the face of sentencing, I was very nervous and a little afraid. I am afraid that I cannot adapt to prison life. I am also afraid that I will have to celebrate my birthday (the second day of conviction) behind the bars.

On the eve of my 24th birthday, I was still recruiting gifts, I was going to film the unboxing of my gifts. But now, my birthday, work, and unboxing are gone, only the cold court papers and the anxiety of waiting for sentencing are left.

I have said several times before that it is my honor to be able to participate in social movements. I still hold this belief until today. Without the courage to join the social movement that day, I will certainly not be the one I am today. In a society full of fear nowadays, we have to experience a lot, and there are more pain and sacrifice. To me, this is also an ordeal.

I wish justice will return to society soon and I hope I can spend my 24th birthday outside the prison."

On Dec 7, 2020, four days after Chow was sentenced to jail for 10 months, she was in a two-person isolation room and the following are her words:

"On the day of sentencing, I was touched to see so many people came to see us off (I cried on the shoulder of an elderly woman who sat next to me), I could see very clearly what was written on the placards held by those chasing the prison van.

The letters I received during this period of time have been very encouraging to me, by knowing that people outside are still supporting me, I have gained the strength to endure the suffering. I hope people can also attend the trials of and write to other imprisoned protesters."

On Dec 9, 2020, the court in Hong Kong denied Agnes Chow's application for an appeal.

Correctional Services Department Censors Books and Pictures Showing "Liberate Hong Kong" Flag

Former lawmaker Bottle Shiu Ka-chun is known for his advocacy in inmates' rights. In his Facebook post on December 4, 2020, Shiu said that Hong Kong Correctional Services demanded to have several pages of three books, nanely "Yuen Long Dark Night", "Under the Sky", and "Hongkonger 2.0" torn away before they could be admitted into the prison. Shiu described the three books as "the latest books banned by the Correctional Services".

The pages to be removed include the descriptions about the gangsters' participation in Yuen Long 721 attack, the police deployment that night, and pictures of "Liberate Hong Kong" flag. Shiu criticized the Department for claiming that there is no censor list, but the inmates' right to read is restricted.

He described the book censorship in the Correctional Services as arbitrary and willful: "If (the Correctional Services) wants to tear away the pages, you can only choose not to bring the books in".

China-born, Pro-Beijing financiers launch new Bauhinia Party in Hong Kong in a bid to "reform" the Opposition-less Legislature

After the disqualification and the mass resignation of the democrats in Hong Kong, the pro-Beijing Camp is expected to further monopolize the Legislative Council's chairs.

Li Shan, a China-born member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the director of the Credit Suisse Group, together with the chairman of China Broadcasting Holdings, Huang Qiuzhi, and the others, launched a new political party "Bauhinia Party" in Hong Kong in May 2020.

The party plans to recruit 250,000 party members with the goal of supporting "one country, two systems" and "a high degree of autonomy", and improving the relationship between Beijing and the SAR government.

The founder Li Shan showed strong support to the implementation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong, and even demanded another transitional system to prosecute and review cases involving breaches of #NationalSecurityLaw, and to complete the legislation of #Article23 of the Basic Law in the future.

He claimed that the newly established political party is a "determined defender" of the principle of "one country, two systems".
