United States imposes visa curbs on members of Chinese Communist Party due to “malign influence”

The US Government has had a new immigration policy of restriction CCP members and their families from traveling to the United States. It reduces the maximum validity length of the B1/B2 non-immigrant business and tourist visas from 10 years to one month. The State Department said the measure was aimed at protecting the nation from the part’s malign influence,”, adding CCP works to "influence Americans through propaganda, economic coercion, and other nefarious activities", also stating that the CCP "sends agents to the United States to unabashedly monitor, threaten, and report on Chinese nationals and Chinese-American groups."

China’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying called it “an escalated form of political oppression towards China” and that American officials should “stop regarding everyone as spies”.

The new immigration policy “will not mean much” until a COVID-related ban on Chinese travelers is lifted.

WA Museum Boola Bardip denies changes to a China display were due to political pressure

After complaint from WA Chinese consul general, the state museum of Western Australia changed description of Covid-19 as virus “originating in China” and included Taiwan in map of China.

Mark Harrison, a senior lecture in Chinese studies at the University of Tasmania, said this was “not correct” and the museum had overstepped Australia’s own foreign police on Taiwan.

A museum spokeswoman added, “Whatever people’s personal views may be about international politics, as a museum we deal in facts. Suggestions that updates were made in response to coercion are without substance. The changes were made in the interests of factual accuracy.”

European Union condemns China over “irresponsible tweet about Australian military”.

The statement from the EU and Japan come after the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, France and New Zealand criticised the actions a Chinese foreign ministry official in tweeting a digitally created image depicting an Australian solider cutting the throat of a child in Afghanistan.

Japan’s embassy in Canberra reiterated that “trade should never be used as a tool to apply political pressure”, and Japan would “duly consider how to exercise our third party rights if Australia proceeds with their case” at the World Trade Organization against China’s barley tariffs.

“We consider the deliberate dissemination of a fabricated image via social media accounts affiliated with China’s ministry of foreign affairs to be irresponsible, insensitive and not at all constructive, particularly given the subject in question,” the EU’s spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy , Nabila Mascali said

Chinese dissident targets Apple, Nike, others after report says they lobbied to weaken forced labor bill

In the United States, the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act is designed to cracker down on ellegef human rights abuses against Muslim minority groups in Vjins’s far west,. The bill come under pressure from multinational companies including Nike, Apple and Coca-Cola, according to a report in the New York Times.

Exiled Chinese dissident Badiucao, who in September was awarded the Vaclav Havel International Prize for Creative Dissent, took to Twitter to launch a series of satirical images targeting Nike, Apple and Coca-Cola for their alleged efforts to weaken the bill.

One of Badiucao's satirical images tries to draw a contrast with Nike's endorsement of former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick's "take a knee" initiative. The Apple image mimics the company's iPhone advertising, but changes the product name to "iChain."

China accuses Danish politicians in feud over Hong Kong

Ted Hui, exiled Hong Kong lawmaker and pro-democracy activist, visited Denmark on Tuesday, December 1st at the invitation of Danish lawmakers. Chinese officials said the Danish politicians violated the “basic norms governing international relations” and that their decision “damages Denmark’s image as a country that has always emphasized the rule of law.”

Hui will soon move to Britain, which has extended residency rights for up to 3 million Hong Kong holders of British National Overseas (BNO) passports, allowing them to live and work there for five years and eventually obtain citizenship. In response to this new immigration policy, Hua Chunying stated “China will consider no longer recognizing BNO passports as valid travel documents, and we reserve the right to take further measures.”

She also made China’s position clear in a briefing in response to Hui’s arrival in Denmark. “We oppose any individual, organization or country interfering in Hong Kong’s affairs, meddling in Hong Kong’s judicial sovereignty and harboring Hong Kong criminals in any way.”

Wuhan lockdown diarist Fang Fang on writing to preserve the truth

Wuhan lockdown diarist Fang Fang on writing to preserve the truth

Chinese novelist Fang Fang, the pen name of Wang Fang, was in a funk when she decided to become the unofficial chronicler of life under coronavirus-included lockdown in Wuhan, where the virus was first discovered in December 2019.

Fang Fang criticised local officials’ early mistakes and cover-ups, aspects of the response the Chinese Communist party has since airbrushed out of the official narrative. Her descriptions of chaotic events also elicited sympathy for the people of her city, in a tacit rebuke of rightwing commentators in the US who labelled the disease the “Wuhan virus”. Her posts were translated into English and collected as a book, Wuhan Diary. The April announcement of its publication sparked online abuse as leftists in China accused her of “handing a knife to foreigners” and spreading “distorted values”.

She has stuck to her criticisms of the Wuhan authorities, even as the party intensified efforts to spin its response as an unblemished success.

Pro-democracy Engineer tells Hong Kong Court to "Return the Power to the Citizens"

Part 1:

[Editor's notes: On July 28, 2019, the police fired numerous #teargas canisters and #rubberbullets in #SheungWan in order to disperse the crowd. 44 people were arrested, 21 of them were charged for rioting. The Court extended the trial from November 13 to December 4, 2021.]

In Hong Kong, 20 civilians, including an 26-year old engineer who pleaded guilty earlier, were accused of the riot at the police-citizen conflict at #SheungWan on July 28, 2019.

On December 4, 2021, Kun Kit-Wang, a 26-year-old engineer, defended himself in court in Hong Kong over rioting charges in the 2019 AntiELAB Movement.

Kun pleaded guilty before the trial and was under detention since May when he revoked his bail.

In court, Kun thanked the magistrate for reminding him to find a legal representative in the previous trial, but he still hoped to defend himself.

Kun said that during the 2019 #AntiELABmovement, #July28 was nothing special originally, but because of the Police’s indulgence of the #July21 indiscriminate attack in #YuenLong, that night triggered the most anger from citizens, and resulted in much anger on the rally on July 28.

He used a quote from #MartinLutherKing, "Riot is a language of the unheard", saying that the #riot classification reflects the government’s negligence of the citizens' opinion.

As a result, he admitted to being part of the riot with no hesitation and indicated that the government should feel ashamed of their actions, not the citizens.

He said there were two #rallies with a million people on #Jun9 and #Jun16, 2019, demonstrating the vox populi. Although the peaceful demonstration gained international accreditation, the Hong Kong government still ignored the backlash and made the decision on their own.

He recalled a quote painted on the wall of the #LegCo chsmber on #Jul01, 2019, "It's you who taught me a peaceful rally can't change anything." It expresses the hopelessness, frustration and anger felt by #Hongkongers at the time.

As there had been magistrate that were unknowledgable concerning the protesters' demands, Kun said that the protesters only hoped for having a chance to participate in policy advocacy, which some regard as "returning the power to the people".

If the #HongKongLegCo does not gain authorisation of the people or does not have a peaceful system to resolve problems, it is suppression. #MaoZedong has said, "fight as there is suppression".

He also pointed out that the #ProvisionalLegislativeCouncil (#PLC) installed by the post-handover government in 1997 was not authorised by the citizens. The handpicked council revived the #PublicOrderOrdinance, which became the law behind the prosecution of many dissidents.

As a person bound by the law, he would like to ask, "do I have the responsibility to obey a contract that I disagree with to begin with?”

In the courtroom, Kun pointed out that the magistrate may think he has a high possibility of reoffending, as he does not show regrets for what he has done. Kun pointed out that "whether it is a re-offence or another riot, it's not his choice but it is up to the government".

He also made reference to a movie, in which the emperor was worried about the number of the beggar's followers, so the emperor would like to dismiss them in order to have a “peaceful" governance. Nevertheless, the beggar told the emperor that no one would choose to be a beggar if the community was stable, and he was not the one to make a choice on whether the beggar community were to disband.

Kun recommended the government to "return the power to the citizens", listen to the citizens' demands, respect people's opinions and resolve the issues behind the riot. The government, however, "strangles the people's outcry with an iron fist", eliminating those who pointed out the problems in the society. Under the circumstances, how could citizens have peace?

He said that in the end, "Fellow defendants, including myself, would not appear in courts if it was a democratic society. Although I was rash on that day, I don't think there was anything wrong in the start. Perhaps, I feel sorry for my family and the people around me, but I have no regret, I am not going to plead, but I welcome a light sentence by the court. This self-defence letter is a small but real struggle in the reality that I live in.”

Reuters: Prominent Hong Kong activist moves to Canada after two-year silence

One of Hong Kong's most prominent pro-democracy activists, who was jailed as part of a China-imposed security crackdown, said on Sunday she had left Hong Kong for Canada after pressure from authorities left her with mental health issues.

Agnes Chow, 27 - a core member of a now-disbanded group of younger activists, including Joshua Wong, who helped drive Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement - said on her Instagram account late on Sunday that she had left Hong Kong for studies in Canada.

Chow's posts - her first public comments since her release from prison in June 2021 - detailed how she had remained under "supervision" from the authorities.

Chow was sentenced to 10 months in jail in Nov 2020 over an unauthorised assembly charge. She was later released on bail on the condition she check in with police regularly, and her passport was confiscated as she faced an alleged national security charge, along with others including pro-democracy businessman Jimmy Lai.

Chow said it was as if the police wanted to remind her that she hadn't regained her freedom, and to "not try to do anything". She said the pressures led her to be diagnosed with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

"Several emotional illnesses put my body and mind in a very unstable state," added Chow.

Reuters could not reach Chow, who arrived in Canada in September, for comment.

Hong Kong police in a statement on Monday condemned Chow's "irresponsible behaviours that blatantly challenge law and order" and urged her not to be a fugitive for the rest of her life.

Chow said it was only this year, after she was accepted by a university in Toronto, that the police agreed to return her passport if she travelled to the Chinese city of Shenzhen.

The trip included visits to Chinese tech major Tencent and a "patriotic" exhibition on China's achievements.

"I was forced to go to mainland China in exchange for the opportunity to study abroad," she wrote.

Chow was due to report to Hong Kong's security police this month but decided not to return out of consideration for her personal safety and well being. "Maybe I won't return for the rest of my life," she wrote.
