Protest Scenes in Myanmar Recall the Fight for Freedom in Hong Kong and Thailand
On Feb 10, 2021, Myanmar civilians protested against the military junta on the fifth consecutive day. In the face of violent suppression by the police, protesters wittingly responded with a sense of humour.

Some protesters dressed up as Harry Potter, drag queens, brides and in different cosplay costumes. Creative protest slogans were also sighted: "I always hate you General," "I should be at home watching BL series, but I'm here for this shit," and "Don't fuck my country, fuck my ex" (sic.).
Meanwhile, medical workers have been on strike for one week. All walks of life, from civil servants, fire fighters, farmers, monks and engineers to bankers have joined the protests. According to the local media, at least 20 uniform police took part in a protest in Loikaw. The military junta, however, denied the claim in a statement, claiming those were civilians.
After the police had shot live rounds at the crowd on Feb 9, the protesters geared up with yellow helmets and eye goggles the next day, reminiscent of the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong and Thailand from the past two years.

Burmese model and actor condemns military junta as "terrorist"
Burmese model and actor Paing Takhon condemns the military junta in Myanmar in social media. In support of the anti-coup protests, Takhon said the military police force has become "terrorists" for shooting peaceful protesters and voluntary first aiders on purpose.
He pointed out that the military force opened fire at ambulance and near residential area.
He calls on the international society can protect the people of Myanmar.

Figo Chan (陳皓桓), activist and convener of the organization Civil Human Rights Front (#CHRF), spoke to our reporter on March 1, 2021 outside West Kowloon magistrates court regarding the hearing of 47 pro-democracy candidates.
The group was charged with "conspiracy to commit subversion" under the #NationalSecurityLaw. The court is currently in session and Figo Chan believes that “it will take a long time since there are quite a number of accused, if each of their lawyers shall speak, it will definitely take until the afternoon.”
Chan said that “I am sure the supporters who are queueing in front of the court right now and those who are not here at the moment will not give up. I hope that we will all continue to persist and speak out."
He added, "Even though the government has restricted us from going on protests and rallies, we still found a way to queue up and vocally support those inside; the government has stopped us from voting, yet we found a way to “vote” with our presence by coming out here.”
“I believe those in court, in jail and those who might be charged and sentenced in the future will persist, so we shouldn’t give up on hope, I am sure it will be okay if we all stand strong on what we believe.”
When asked about his thoughts on whether the accused may be granted bail, Chan replied saying that “I really don’t know how to evaluate the situation right now since Hong Kong has become so absurd. Even organizing an unofficial primary poll can be considered to be a conspiracy to commit subversion, and it seems that the chances of them being granted bail are slim."
"I know that the world can get more and more absurd each day , but as long as we, the people, remain logical and stand strong on what we believe is right, I think it will be okay.”
Chan was also asked whether he has anything he would like to say to Hong Kong supporters overseas. “I know that the Hong Kong citizens who have moved abroad and the overseas supporters must be feeling very powerless and hopeless right now. They must be sad because of how their home has become."
"But I want to emphasize that there are still a lot of people in Hong Kong who are still persisting on, many of us who are still here haven't given up yet. It doesn’t matter where you are, as long as we all continue to speak out for freedom and democracy, we will be able to get the democracy we fight for."
"If we can speak out for the citizens in Myanmar, in turn, those in other countries can definitely support those in Hong Kong. So I believe we must all stand strong, persist, and never give up,” said Figo Chan.

Although the military roiled a deadly crackdown on February 28 which killed 20 people and arrested over 1,200 civilians, more protesters took to the street on March 1 and March 2 to rally against the military rule.
As the military’s crackdown became increasingly violent and deadly, determined pro-democracy protesters put their names, blood type and contact details on their arms before part-taking in a rally. In the face of tear gas and gunfire, young protesters relied barely on debris, iron bars, wet towels, and plastic water bags for protection and defence.
Very few protesters were wearing proper gas masks. Construction site helmets were not able to protect them from live ammunition.
Funerals were seen in multiple places around the nation. Saddened citizens gathered to pay respect to the victims of military brutality at these funerals. They were gathered at the funerals to mourn them at places where the protester was shot and died.
The courage of young protesters and the violence of military oppression in Myanmar have recalled memories of the civil disobedience movement in Hong Kong in 2019.
A columnist of Stand News picked the news up and wrote on the paper with a hearty closing remark, “The animals in Animal Farm surrendered. But the people in Hong Kong, Thailand and Myanmar did not.

Since the Myanmar military launched a coup in February this year, there were over 860 people have been murdered and over 6,000 being arrested. Former State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest. As the military violently suppress the demonstrations, many protesters decided to join armed organisation, getting weapons to fight against the military. There are doctors, university professors among the protest. But there are many people described, they tried to protest peacefully, however armed resistance is the only hope.
Young protester: I do not dare to kill animals before, now I learn to use shotguns against the military
Al Jazeera interviewed a few protesters. Among them, 27 years old Andrew, as one of the young protesters, he described himself for not daring to kill animals before the coup. He has been participated to peaceful protests, and witnessed the citizens being murdered by the military. He then decided to join the civil armed forces, learnt how to use wooden shotgun against military, “When I saw soldier killed citizens, I was very sad, I believed I need to fight against the military government for the citizens.”
