Elderly Weeps in Hong Kong, “We'll have a chance to meet again. Democracy will return!”

1215 | West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts, Hong Kong

On March 1, 2021 in Hong Kong, 47 pro-democracy activists who were charged with "subverting state powers" under the #NationalSecurityLaw were mentioned in court.

Outside of the court, hundreds of Hongkongers arrived to show support for the fight for freedom and democracy in face of political oppression and persecution.

“We'll have a chance to meet again. Democracy will return!”
Grandpa Chan, a pro-democracy activist from the "Guard Our Kids" campaign, said in tears.

Young students in HK show support for pro-democracy activists braving draconian National Security enforcement

The video captured scenes not seen for months after #China #NSL crackdown in Hong Kong.

Determined and Unafraid: Pro-democracy Hongkongers in Solidarity Rally Outside of the Court

1330 | West Kowloon Magistrates' Court, Hong Kong

Half of the day has gone by, hundreds of pro-democracy Hong Kong citizens, continued to rally outside the Court to show support and respect to the 47 democrats facing National Security accusation.

Many showed up in black to express discontentment to the Government's crackdown of dissenting voices, they chanted “Hongkongers #AddOil” [a Cantonese slang meaning "Hang on], along the way as well as “Release all political prisoners” and “#StandwithHongKong”.

Hong Kong Police Bar Arrested Pro-democracy Activist From Meeting Their Lawyers Before Court Hearing

On March 1, 2021, 47 pro-democracy activists and politicians, who were charged with inciting subversion under the National Security Law was mentioned at the West Kowloon Magistrate Court at 11 am.

The defendants were detained overnight in the police station and sent to court under escort at around 9 am. The defendants’ finally got to meet their lawyers at the detention room in the court. The trial started at around 1 pm.

The live broadcast arranged by the court was, however, not clear. Journalists couldn’t identify who attend the hearing and who were absent from the screen.

The live streaming of the court failed to capture all the defendants. Some faces cannot shown. From the screen, at least ten police officers were standing in front of the defendants.

In the court, some defendants made requests. However, no one could hear them in the live broadcast and could not identify which ones of them were involved.

A male voice among the defendants shouted, “I just want to pass an instruction to my lawyer. Why is it not allowed?”.

A female voice which resemember former reporter Gwyneth HO Kwai-lam shouted, “I want to meet my lawyer! I am not allowed to meet my lawyer before the hearing. That’s what I know only.”

Hong Kong Police Warn Pro-democracy Civilians of National Security Violation

1547 | West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts, Hong Kong

At the corner of the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court in Hong Kong, police officers raised the blue flag, warning of an unlawful assembly, and the purple flag, warning citizens about actions that might violate the National Security Law, a few times over 30 seconds.

The officers asked the citizens at the location to leave.

As they were raising the purple flag, the officers also declared that the slogans chanted by the citizens have violated the National Security Law and their action is an act of inciting secession, they demanded the citizens to stop chanting the slogans immediately.

At 1pm on March 1, 2021, pro-democracy Hongkongers continued to rally outside the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court, where 47 pro-democracy activists were mentioned in court for the charge of "conspiracy to commit subversion", despite police intimidation.

After learning that the court session would resume at 15:30, citizens on site chanted "Heung Gong Yan Gar Yau!" in Cantonese, meaning "Hongkongers, fight on!"

Hongkongers Show Three-Finger Salute

1613 | West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts, Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, some pro-democracy 'yellow' restaurants brought and distributed some drinks, sandwiches and snacks for the reporters as well as the citizens in support of the pro-democracy activists who are being mentioned in court.

Citizens gave a three-finger salute to show respect and express their gratitude towards the stores' generous actions.

They also chanted “ Hong Kongers! Add Oil!”. Given that there were many who gathered, the chant was very powerful.

HK Police Set Up Cordon Near a Primary School

On the afternoon of March 1, 2021, the Hong Kong Police ciricled a bus stop near Ying Wa Primary School by setting up a cordon.

The bus stop was at Tonkin Street, opposite to West Kowloon Magistrates' Court, where the hearing of the 47 arrested pro-democracy activists is taking place.

At least 8 male and 4 female civilians were intercepted. It was not known if they were fined under the anti-gathering 599G restriction.

According to USP, police reportedly rounded up civilians who were waiting for bus at the bus stop.
