A video went viral on the Internet on February 17, as Hong Kong Police Commissioner Tang Ping-keung was sighted hanging out with some showbiz celebrities in a dinner party that took place on February 16.
In the name of "exchanging" with the all-star soccer team, the police commissioner said in the party that he learnt how to act and speak as a policeman from the stars who attended the dinner, including actors Jackie Chan, Eric Tsang and Alex Fong Chung-sun as well as singer Alan Tam. “In the past, I didn’t know how to be a police officer; however, after watching Jackie Chan and Alex Fong [Chung-sun], I know how to act and speak like one!” said Commissioner Tang, who openly referred them as his idols.
Moreover, Tang explained the reason why he could speak "well" at the District Council meetings is because he has learnt some speaking techniques from television shows hosted by actor Eric Tsang.
Tang was not the only high-ranking police officer in the party. Other prominent participants of this party include both the current and former police spokesmen, Kwok Ka-chuen and John Tse Chun-Chung.
Another unexpected face included the retired police officer Chu King-wai, who was arrested and charged with assault after hitting a random pedestrian with his baton during the 2014 Umbrella Movement.
Based on the pictures taken at the party, the participants did not wear facemasks while making close contact; some were even eating without using utensils. In addition, a lady allegedly smoked inside the indoor restaurant before the police. The Hong Kong government has long outlawed smoking in indoor areas since 1 January 2007.
The public relations bureau of the Police responded to The Stand News on the matter, claiming that this dinner was a "private social event" and the expenses were shared equally among the police officers and other participants at their own cost. They added that the police have developed a close and fruitful relationship with the Hong Kong all-star soccer team for a long time as they are all soccer-lovers.

Since 2013, he has been selected by thr Chinese Communist Party to be a member at the PRC's Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
In 2009, he made the following comment by correlating freedom to chaos. Chan expressed in a forum in China that he was not sure whether freedom is a good thing or not: “If things get too liberal, you see how chaotic Hong Kong has become. Taiwan is also very chaotic”. On the same occassion, Chan told the press that he would not buy his television in China, as "televisions made in China would explode".
In 2019, he called himself a "flag guardian" of the PRC's national flag. When asked about the 2-million-peopled protest that took place in Hong Kong on June 16, he said “I found out there was a big march in Hong Kong, but I did not know what it was about.”
In his memoir “Never Grow Up”, he opened up to his past of spending all his money on gambling, drinking and visiting prostitutes. His confession did not surprise the public too much, as his scandals have long been engraved on the headlines of many newspapers before. One of his most quoted lines includes his description of extra-marital affairs as
“a mistake that every man in this world commits”.
