Police Raise Blue Warning Flag Accusing Citizens of "Destroying Stability"

22:02 | Prince Edward, Hong Kong
Like any last day of the month, Hongkongers mourned victims of police brutality outside Prince Edward Station.

On Aug 31, 2019, Hong Kong police notoriously attacked train passengers with pepper spray and baton. After 14 months, many Hongkongers refused to forget the trauma.

On Oct 31, 2020, citizens brought flowers to the station as usual but were faced with tremendous police opposition.

In the video, the police hoisted a blue warning flag and warned civilians on the spot of participating in an "illegal assembly". Meanwhile, an eye catching yellow banner that read "I want genuine universal suffrage" went past.

Young Hongkonger Grieves Loss of Freedom of Expression

After being detained and searched by police behind cordon lines, this young protester showed up at Prince Edward MTR station in remembrance of the victims of the 8.31 police attack last year.

The youngster told reporters that he felt that he was being deprived of freedom of expression. He reiterated that Hong Kong used to be one of the world’s freest city. Citizens’ freedom and rights, however, are being eroded, as they are no longer allowed to express their views and stance freely, even when they were not disturbing anyone else.

Hong Kong Police Announces the Upcoming Arrest of All Civilians Paying Tribute to Police Brutality Victims

On August 31, 2019, riot police barged into the subway trains in Prince Edward station and indiscrimately assaulted passengers and pro-democracy protesters on their way home.

Many civilians were gravely injured, and many others were seen went down on their knees, or begging the police to stop pepper-spraying and hitting them. Known as the 831 Prince Edward Incident, this was one of the most brutal incidents during the Anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong.

Since then, members of the public voluntarily go to the #PrinceEdward train station on the last day of every month, bringing white flowers to pay tribute to the casualties and the victims of #PoliceBrutality in the pro-democracy movement.

On Nov 28, 2020, it was reported that Hong Kong police will arrest any civilians paying tribute outside the Prince Edward Station starting from Nov 30, 2020.

District Councilor Lam Siu-ben told reporters that since beginning of 2020, police officers often sweep away white flowers as soon as civilians put them down. Other police officers were seen closely monitoring onlookers from nearby Mong Kok Police Station. When a civilian put down a flower, they would immediately be threatened for committing littering.

Lam quoted a source saying the police will tighten enforcement from this month to disperse citizens gathering nearby Prince Edward Station and arrest those refuse to leave.

Lam said that from his observation, “police do not want to see white flowers being placed at Prince Edward station and around the area of Mong Kok Police Station".

15 Months After Police Attack: Prince Edward MTR Surrounded by a Different Sea of White

1945 | Prince Edward

Nov 30, 2020 marks 15 months since the 8.31 Prince Edward Station attack, and the first one since the police announced cracking down on flower offerings at the MTR exit.

The same fences that were decorated with white flowers in previous months are lined with police officers in white uniforms tonight.

While citizens are no longer allowed to lay down flowers - on threat of an immediate littering fine - the image of a sea of white memorializing the victims of that night's police brutality has, ironically, returned once again.

On August 31, 2020 pro-democracy supporters gathered in remembrance of the #PrinceEdwardAttack, where Hong Kong riot police assaulted peaceful civilians in Prince Edward subway station.

On that evening, police officer made multiple attempts to disperse the crowd. Rounds of pepper-spray were deployed and a woman who was 7-8 months’ pregnant was allegedly neck-locked and dragged by a police office to the ground.

The woman was reportedly injured and sent to the hospital. Her husband, who was also present, was subdued and arrested by the police, accused of disorderly conduct at a public place.

Masked Plainclothes Officer Accuses Civilian of "Assaulting the Police"

A 28-year-old #CivilServant was charged for "elbowing" a plainclothes police officer and possessing a Swiss army knife. The case was trialed in West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts on March 23.

The alleged assault took place during a commemorative gathering 2 months after the indiscriminate police attack at the Prince Edward Station on Aug 31, 2019. Station sergeant Leung Sai-cheong admitted to the court that most of the police officers that evening were masked, but he denied that the police were disguising themselves as protesters.

The station sergeant said, "I was disguised as a civilian to blend into the scene. The lawyer wants me to describe the disguise in detail, like whether it was a hawker or a construction worker. It is really hard for me to describe it to you."

The defence pointed out that Leong's testimony differs from records in his logbook, but Leong disagreed.

Hongkonger Never Forget Prince Edward Station Attack, 23 monthd ago

23 months ago, on August 31 2019, Hong Kong police barged into a subway train arriving at the Prince Edward station and, discriminately, assaulted pro-democracy protesters and passengers in the cabinet on their way home.

It was one of the goriest incidents during the anti-extradition law amendment bill movement in 2019, where civilians covered in blood were seen holding nothing but broken umbrellas to protect each other and some injured ones being left unattended in agony when police officers guarded against first aiders and medics from entering the scene to provide medical care.

The incident has then been remembered as 831 incident and commemorated every month.

This night, amidst growing white terror in the city and National Security threat, some Hongkongers continued to bring white flowers to the scene to show respect for those who have resisted, risked, and even sacrificed in this pro-democracy movement and a small home-made poster was seen hoisted on a nearby handrail.

Definant Hongkongers refuse to forget police brutality in pro-democracy movement

2200 | Prince Edward, Hong Kong

Since China's imposition of National Security Law in Hong Kong in June 2020, the authorities have been cracking down opposing voices in the city and any efforts made for freedom and democracy.

Putting their freedom on the line, some Hongkongers continued to find subtle ways to defend their rights to express themselves in a bid for democracy.

On the day where Hongkongers usually gather to pay tribute to citizens and pro-democracy advocates who suffered police brutality on August 31, 2019, some hid white flowers in their bags, some laid brocade at the subway station, while another man was sighted carrying a handbill that read, "it is sad today, but I will carry on the fight."
