HK police continue arbitrary arrests, insulting and picking on harmless elderly

On the evening of September 10, a group of citizens peacefully voiced support for the detained protesters and activists outside Lai Chi Kok reception center

They carried heart-shaped cardboard cutouts and signs that read "Freedom Will Triumph Over Fear", "Hong Kong Solidarity" and "Support Tam Tak-chi".

Although the rally went on orderly, HK police started to stop and intercept passing-by citizens on nearby streets as early as 7pm, and issued fine tickets to reporters and onlookers, a “scare-tactic” the officers have been maliciously practicing ever since the gathering ban was imposed.

At around 7:30pm, two elderly ladies were caught in a police cordon on Castle Peak Road opposite to W688 mall with a big group of onlookers. They were ticketed for violating the gathering ban, citing they all share “the same purpose as others" as the reason.

In their old age, they were utterly stunned. In frustration, they made every attempt possible to explain to police officers and onlooking plain-clothed officers that there were just two of them walking together. They further explained that they are faithful Buddhists practicing austerities and chanting sutras. It would be going against their religious belief to accept the fine tickets, as by doing so, they would be discrediting their practices. They sought officers’ understanding for their decision to reject the fine tickets.

After a long and tiring 2-hour negotiation, police officers were not moved by these two harmless elderlies and even told them to "take your (their) questions to the judge". The police arrested the two senior citizens at around 10pm and took them to the police station.

With much assistance provided by residents in the neighborhood and district councilors, the two ladies were released after midnight. They were disappointed and exhausted when walking out of the police station, holding fine tickets for breaching the gathering ban.

Another defiant elderly, Grandpa Chan of the group Protect the Children, was also sighted on the scene. While being intercepted, he challenged police officers for arbitrary enforcement, quoting the police’s recent attack on a pregnant woman and a 12-year girl as examples.

In response, some officers hurled back insults at Chan, calling him “a dead old man.”

Hong Kong Police Ticket 14 Pro-democracy Elderly for violating gathering ban, each fined for HK$5,000

With the fourth wave of Coronavirus showing no signs of subsiding in Hong Kong, the SAR government announced further restrictions, in which participants being caught in gathering more than two people will be discharged by paying a fixed penalty of $5,000 starting today (December 11).

At around 10pm, a group of 10 some pro-democracy elderly citizens was seen being encircled in police cordon line nearby Soya Street and Sai Yeung Choi street in Mong Kok.

The elderly were being intercepted and searched by more than 20 police officers, despite that they all were wearing masks and respecting the gathering ban and social distancing restriction.

They are perhaps the first group of citizens being charged for violating the latest social distancing restriction, subject to a fine of HK$5,000.

Among them, two elderly people were taken away to a police vehicle for not being able to show their identifications.

Hong Kong’s COVID Rules Are Screwing Over The Poor At Every Turn

//The effects of the pandemic had driven almost a hundred people into homelessness, a survey by the local advocacy group Society for Community Organization (#SOCO) found in May.

[These cases are] ... among at least a thousand homeless people in Hong Kong who have been pushed deeper into the abyss by government efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, in a stark illustration of how the crisis is disproportionately hurting the poor and worsening inequality in one of the world’s richest cities.

In response to questions from VICE World News about what the government has done to aid rough sleepers during the pandemic, a spokesperson said it “stepped up their efforts to proactively reach out to street sleepers, providing them with up-to-date health related information and in-kind assistance such as face masks and hand sanitizers as well as referring them to hostels.”

Such a response highlighted how little Hong Kong officials understood the needs of people who don’t have a home. //

HK Police Intercept #Elderly in Wheelchair

On July 1, 2021, a 50-year-old Hong Kong man, #LeungKinFai, passed away after kniving a policeman and stabbing himself in Causeway Bay. One week after, police were still stationed in the area, in order to stop citizens from paying tribute to Leung.

On July 7, 2021, an elderly lady in wheelchair was selling some small packets of white champaca outside the Sogo Department Store. She told InMedia that she has "read the news" and felt sorry for the incident. She said Leung died innocently and his sacrifice was in vain.

The elderly lady said she is not afraid of the police, "The police should be fear of the citizens, but not the other way round."

She said, "Hong Kong is getting worse and worse". She hoped that the city can "become as free as before" and encouraged Hongkongers to hang on and persevere, in order to welcome hope.

Government Makes #LeaveHomeSafe app Compulsory in Hong Kong Starting from Nov 1; Police Makes Arrests

The Hong Kong SAR Government implemented yet another controversial rule on November 1, 2021, mandating the population to check in with the LeaveHomeSafe tracking app when entering government premises. These locales include libraries, wet markets, courts, and sports facilities.

On the first day of its implementation, the Hong Kong Police arrested at least 5 people in the morning at Immigration Tower in Wan Chai, accusing them of using a fake app.

RTHK reported that the arrestees included two immigration officers, one staff member of the Audit Commission and two contractors.

Although exemptions are given to children, the elderly and disabled people, they are still required to submit their personal details.

Civil Service Secretary #PatrickNip claimed the government will "exercise flexibility"; however, according to InMedia, outside the Tai Po Municipal Complex, many domestic helpers and elderly had difficulties in adapting to the policy. Some had to download the app on the site, while some left for the street market instead.

As the people of Hong Kong expressed concern over the privacy issue of the government-monitored app, many citizens bought a new phone just for installing the app and to prevent personal information from being tracked.

Make vaccines mandatory for elderlies, Pro-Beijing lawmaker urges

Hong Kong's COVID-19 death toll soared to its highest at 7,612 on March 31, during the fifth-wave of Omicron outbreak.

Elderly care homes are reportedly facing the gravest threat, as too many elderly residents were not vaccinated due to chronic health issues. Staff shortages and lack of on-site isolation facilities also added to the soaring death rate.

During a Legislative Council Health Affairs Committee meeting, Holden Chow Ho-ding, vice-chairman of the pro-China Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Progress of Hong Kong (#DAB), urged the government to act “decisively” and make it mandatory for the city’s elderly to be vaccinated.

“Reduce deaths. Reduce severe cases. The government should act decisively, and make it legally required for seniors aged 70 and above to be vaccinated," said Chow.
