Tokyo seeks to lure financial groups from crisis-hit Hong Kong

//Protests and Beijing clampdown seen as opportunity to promote Japanese capital
as alternative financial centre

//Japan is considering visa waivers, tax advice and free office space for asset managers, traders and bankers from Hong Kong in a campaign to cast Tokyo as the best exit strategy should a crisis force them out of the semi-autonomous territory.

//Japan has spent decades looking for ways to make Tokyo a valid rival to Hong Kong as the region’s premier financial centre... will now go “further than ever before” to entice financial professionals and institutions to its capital.

//Tokyo’s efforts now had the “tailwind” of Beijing’s proposed new national security law, which has triggered mass protests in Hong Kong and which many fear will fundamentally alter the legal and commercial environment of the former British colony.

//Fidelity International recently chose Tokyo as the business continuity site for part of its buyside trading operations. Longer-term goals... would involve convincing larger institutions to move entire trading desks to Tokyo.

//the government could also temporarily lift a requirement for fund managers arriving under the new scheme to have a permanent office address, allowing them to work out of shared-office facilities.

//People involved in promoting Tokyo as an alternative to Hong Kong admitted it was unlikely the campaign would be backed by any significant changes in tax policy

#WhiteTerror Spreads to #Sport Sector: Pro-China Legislator Condemns Hong Kong Athletes

According to Hong Kong's Chief Executive #CarrieLam, the SAR Government had purchased the broadcasting rights for the #Tokyo #OlympicGames, and arranged for five TV stations to broadcast.

In the panel meeting on Home Affairs at the Legislative Council (#LegCo), athletes representative of Hong Kong were, however, attacked by the pro-Beijing DAB party.

For instance, Leung Che-cheung, a #DAB member, criticized the Hong Kong Ladies’ Foil Team members, for reportedly hand signing the pro-democracy “Five Demand, Not One Less” slogan during the 2019 World Cup.

The pro-China legislator comdemns it as an action "against the Government".

Leung continued to ask the Government to follow up with this matter.

Concuring with Leung, the Government's Commissioner for Sports Yeung Tak-keung claimed that “politics should be separated from sports”.

Yeung said that athletes must sign a guideline before participating in competitions, and should not express political demands on the Olympic occasions. Yeung emphasized that there is any violation, the game would be suspended and the personnel would be penalized.

German Media Criticized China as a “Soulless Medal Factory”,
14-year-old Gold Medallist Practices Diving Hard for her Sick Mother

Tokyo Olympics ended on 8 August which China is almost the champion for having the most Olympics gold medals. However, its “national system” of training athletes to win glory has been controversial. Suddeutche Zeitung recently described China as a “soulless medal factory” in an article. The 14 years old Olympics champion Quan Hongchan, also known as the “diving genius”, was mentioned in the previous interview that she was tricked into diving due to her poor academic results and the incentives to get medical treatment for her sick mother. She has to dive more than a hundred times a day and nearly 300 times on land that she only stay at home during the holidays and has never been to amusement parks or zoos.

Some Weibo netizens lamented the poor treatment of athletes by the national team and felt very distressed. After she won the award, many Chinese snack brands offered to give away her favourite snack, and some mainland companies also gave away a house, a shop, and RMB $200,000 in cash.

Moreover, a Weibo public account, “Middle-Class Life Observation”, posted a comment, but was being banned at the moment, stated that because Quan was too young to be sensible to thank the party and the country. Instead, she directly said that she once wanted to give up but revealed her wills to make money to treat her mother’s illness by working hard. However, she had no idea what kind of disease her mother has as she did not know how to pronounce those words. It is questionable that Quan, who started diving at the age of 7, may not receive a good education at all, making her speech “difficult to beautify”.
