Love In War

In these times of affliction,
Our love seeks only to protect our next generation.

We promised we won't let each other be maimed down in bloodshed, knocked out in trauma, locked up in prison.

Yet, everything came too sudden.

We can't stand in the flow of history,
Nor can we hasten the advent of romance.

We can't know when next we can embrace each other,
Nor can we determine when we'll say our last farewells.

So let us wipe our tears and behold,

For if there's one promise we make,
love, it shall be.

Sherry Chan: In the era of disappointment and hope for coexistence, do you still believe in love?

(19 Aug) In mid-July, the National Radio and Television Administration released a list of 20 "items requiring censorship and alternative expressions", some of which involved the regulation [of depicting] love or romantic relationships: "Romantic dramas cannot be too sweet" and "contemporary themes should maintain proper values; social conflicts must not be highlighted. Endeavour to portray the beautiful lives of normal people..."

To sum up these 20 items, the essence of love according to the #totalitarian regime is this: It shall follow social norms absolutely, teens shall not indulge in puppy love, love shall not be regarded as the be-all and end-all; they should work on upward mobility and enter Tsinghua or Peking University to contribute to society and serve the country.

From the perspective of sociologist Sherry Chan, the essence of love is #individualism. It causes a person to desire #freedom and possess their own mind and soul. As such, love and totalitarian rationale are completely incompatible... In the 21st century, we are still chasing after this most quintessential question: Can love overcome all obstacles?

Former Pro-Democracy Lawmaker Helps Jailed Activists to Send Flowers on Valentine's Day

In ancient Roman Empire, Father Valetine had helped couples to get married despite the opposition of the authorities. At that time, the Roman Emperor banned marriage, in order to send more people to war.

In 2021-Hong Kong, Bottle Shiu, social worker and former lawmaker, said Valentine's Day is always a commemoration of resistance and he felt even more so in this times.

Shiu said, "It is no longer just a story, but a reflection of our society. Considering hundreds of jailed pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, the regime first imprisons them physically and then tries to confine their thoughts. Love becomes their way of resistance."

On Valentine's Day 2021, Shiu helped jailed pro-democracy protesters to send flowers to their love ones.

Remanded Former Lawmaker
#AlbertHo Receives Letter from Grandson: "Come Home Soon and We Love You"

Albert Ho, vice-chairman of Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, with 9 other members of the Democratic Party were accused of organising and knowingly taking part in an unauthorized assembly and other charges on October 1, 2019.

All 10 pro-democracy figures pleaded guilty before the hearing. They were then remanded and the sentencing was set to be announced on May 28, 2021.

Ho’s former assistant and currently Tuen Mun District Councillor, Beatrice Chu, posted on her Facebook page that Ho was unwell when she visited him.

Ho said that he has been lacking sleep because he was put in an individual cell that was poorly ventilated.

On May 23, 2021, Chu posted an update on her page that Ho had been moved to a cell with better ventilation, but he still had poor appetite and looked depressed.

She mentioned that Ho’s grandchild wrote a letter to cheer up Ho on May 22, 2021. His grandson said he missed Ho much and that he understood Ho’s life in the cell is “bored and hot, but you have to stay strong! We all love you!"

Ho's grandson also told Ho that he would take good care of Grandma and not to worry.

Pro-Beijing Camp Attacks Hong Kong's Popular Male Love TV Show

A TV show about a male love triangle is proving a big hit with viewers, but criticism from pro-Beijing politicians is stirring concern that broader freedoms could be caught up in China’s political crackdown, even as Hong Kong prepares to host the Gay Games in 2022.

“Ossan’s Love,” a 15-episode drama focusing on a romance among three men working in a real estate agency, has racked up hundreds of thousands of viewers over the past month. The show was praised by rights advocates for helping to bring gay relationships into the mainstream in Hong Kong.
