Staff of Kingyo, a beverage chain-store, put a whole box of drinks made by the store for press, voluntary first aiders and freedom fighters. A note was written “Never forget 721; right or wrong is about conscience”.

The fines may be ruthless, but love still exists

A man tried to shove some cash into the hands of three youngsters he has never met before. They did not accept this man’s generosity despite having just been issued fines by the police. They shook their heads and waved their hands saying, “No, no, no… we work part-time. We have some money, there’s no need.”

87-year-old Grandma saddened by growing police brutality but persistent to stand-by young protesters and fight on

While citizens passionately chanted, “Liberate Kong Kong, Revolution of our times” and “Hong Kong Independence, the only way out” , 87-year-old Grandma Yung Shui-fong sat quietly at a corner and didn’t join the rest of the crowd.

On her backpack, however, there was a vast collection of ribbons in yellow, white and black symbolizing umbrella movement in 2014, support-the-medic movement, and the last one representing one’s conscience.

Living in the internet age where most of protest information are disseminated online, Grandma Yung, without a smart phone, only can rely on radio and TV news reports to catch up with the latest development of various activities.

Commenting on situation in Hong Kong, Yung expressed, “police nowadays are a lot more malicious than in 2014.”

Although she only could receive information on protest activities at the very last minutes, she continued to partake in demonstrations to show her support to protect the young protesters. She said with a smile, “I am older than Grandpa Chan of the Protect the Child Group, even though I look younger.”

When chatting with Grandma Yung, she appeared to be shy and uneasy. Her compassion and kindness are a distinct contrast to the harsh reality that HongKongers are going through. There is no despair and hatred in her eyes, but sadness and defiance to fight on.

A Letter from Prison: Imprisoned Pro-democracy Protester Wishes Hongkongers a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival

Here is the translation of the letter:

//To Hongkongers:

Never forget:

Please do not be so over-occupied by the pandemic that you forget over 9,000 arrestees who paid the price for Hong Kong's freedom and democracy, nor forget those jailed for the 2016 Lunar New Year protest. They are our youths and elders, who really love Hong Kong so damn much.

Never forget:

7.21, 6.12, 8.31 ... These dates are etched into my heart, never to be forgotten. Have Hongkongers forgotten them, I wonder?

No one is an island. Every youth and every elder who sacrificed their future for Hong Kong is one of us, an inseparable part of us. Hongkongers cannot forget them, or let their memory fade away ...

**

Wish everyone a happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

Keep the faith and stay safe, everyone!

Ying Sip-Sik

[Editor's note: the two drawings on the right references the Lamma Island Ferry Disaster on Oct 1, 2012, in which a ferry carrying passengers to see the PRC National Day fireworks collided with with another and quickly sank. 39 lives were lost that night, and many Hongkongers have since treated Oct 1 as a day of mourning.

Though investigations pointed out negligence in the construction of the doomed ferry, to this date the police has not yet given any conclusions, leaving families of the deceased without answers for over 8 years.]

"Winter Solstice With You": District Councillor Spreads Christmas Cheer at Street Booth

Tonight is winter solstice, traditionally a night of dinner and gathering with family and friends. With the epidemic, however, it is not so feasible to go out and celebrate the solstice, or the coming Christmas neither. With so much disheartening news of Hongkongers facing political persecution in the city, and even in China - as in the case of #Save12HKYouths - many in the city find themselves with little Christmas joy this year.

Tonight, Mongkok North District Councillor Siu Tak-kin set up a street-side Christmas display, with a 4-meter Christmas tree and a 2-meter-tall snowman figure. Many citizens passing by posed for Christmas photos. Siu's district council team had originally ordered wall calendars to be handed out to citizens, but the shipment was detained in China. Instead, Siu's team printed new calendar posters, and handed them out to passing citizens.

They also set up a table for "Christmas cards for 12 HKers", where citizens could write their thoughts to the 12 detained Hongkongers. Siu will later mail them to the 12's detention center in Shenzhen.

Streetside Banners of Song Lyrics for a Season of Heavy Hearts in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, banners with social movement-themed song lyrics appeared on the streets of Mongkok over the past few weeks, in courtesy of Mongkok North District Councilor Siu Tak-kin.

He hung up these banners at locations allotted to him as a district councillor, in order to bring the locals some cheer and blessings.

Citizens joked that these banners "come with sound" and the now-familiar songs seem to play in their heads as soon as they read the lyrics.

The lyrics on the banners read:

"Stars may fade, as darkness fills the air
Through the mist a solitary trumpet flares"

"If I could be by your side, through the good times and the bad -
That's already good enough"

"In the end, this is a revolution without winners
But I wish that you would - please -
stay and bear witness with me"

"If there are rioters on this planet,
Is this what they would be like?"

We can no longer go on rallies, we can no longer vote; But at least, we can still buy pineapples

“Hong Kong people can no longer go on rallies, can no longer vote;
But at least, we can still buy pineapples.

Since the Chinese import ban on Taiwanese pineapples two weeks ago, many Yuen Long residents asked a local fruit store whether they can purchase Taiwanese pineapples. The crazy owner immediately took up the suggestion without hesitation, and had promised to order them. That order filled 10 whole pallets. The owner worried whether he had overstocked.

When I went to the store in the afternoon, this was the scene I saw: hundreds of pineapple boxes sold out in a couple of hours. Those with cars came to pick up entire boxes; those queuing in line patiently waited. Many of those in line even had to place orders when they were sold out.

We all had an unspoken understanding, that this is the only thing left we can do.

This is our silent protest.

With the money spent on a 20-dollar pineapple, we support those walking on the same path as us, and gave ourselves the courage to live on in this changed city.

The pineapple I ate tasted bittersweet, just like all the joy and sorrows we share with each other.

Thank you, citizens of Yuen Long.
Thank you, the crazy owner of Hokee Fruits (@hokee_meows).

#AlbertHo Receives Letter from Grandson: "Come Home Soon and We Love You"

Albert Ho, vice-chairman of Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, with 9 other members of the Democratic Party were accused of organising and knowingly taking part in an unauthorized assembly and other charges on October 1, 2019.

All 10 pro-democracy figures pleaded guilty before the hearing. They were then remanded and the sentencing was set to be announced on May 28, 2021.

Ho’s former assistant and currently Tuen Mun District Councillor, Beatrice Chu, posted on her Facebook page that Ho was unwell when she visited him.

Ho said that he has been lacking sleep because he was put in an individual cell that was poorly ventilated.

On May 23, 2021, Chu posted an update on her page that Ho had been moved to a cell with better ventilation, but he still had poor appetite and looked depressed.

She mentioned that Ho’s grandchild wrote a letter to cheer up Ho on May 22, 2021. His grandson said he missed Ho much and that he understood Ho’s life in the cell is “bored and hot, but you have to stay strong! We all love you!"

Ho's grandson also told Ho that he would take good care of Grandma and not to worry.

Hongkongers Wish Pro-democracy Protesters Happy Birthday in #Court

In a hearing relating to a pro-democracy protest on December 8, 2019, citizens went to the High Court on June 8, 2021 to voice support for the defendents who were charged by the prosecution with "conspiring to assault with intent".

Among the defendants, #LaiChunPong, the owner of the pro-democracy 'yellow' store 3C, and #CheungMingYu, who was one of the 12 Hongkongers arrested and jailed in China, both have their birthdays in June.

As the hearing came to an end, their families together with some supporting citizens, shouted "Happy Birthday" and "Fight On" to them.

As they were remanded and transported by the vehicle of the Correctional Services Department, their families and supporters unfurled a banner that read "Happy Birthday" on the street.

Lai's family members told the press they wished he could come home soon. They also mentioned that Lai was moved when other detainees made him a birthday cake inside the detention center.

Free home meals for distressful #HongKongers in #UK

In recent months, heaps of Hong Kong people left the city for good and moved to England. Among them some could be financially improvised, while others could be afflicted for various reasons.

The #GoodNeighbourChurch England, a pro-democracy charity group originated in Hong Kong, launched a heartening “Free Home-cooked meals” project for Hongkongers in need, with an aim to take care not only the “tummies” but also the “hearts” of those in distress.

The project has been positively received in the UK with more volunteers signing up to cook and donate free meals.

The Good Neighbour Church England, the organizer of the project said that the project targets both youngsters and adults residing in the UK, regardless of the location.

Anyone who is homesick, longing for Hong Kong; or improvised; or unable to gather and dine with their family members can enroll for free meals.

There is no constrain set to recruit volunteers neither, so long as they “#LoveHongKong and love #Hongkongers.” The organizer also left “meal arrangement” open and flexible for the two parties to either “dine together at home” or arrange “takeaway”.
