Hong Kong Police Reject Bail for Veteran Activist with Cancer Who Hoists China's Flag Upside Down

15 figures in the pro-democracy camp being charged with unlawful assembly appeared at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts on July 15.

Before the court session, Koo Sze Yiu, a veteran activist, hoisted the PRC's national flag upside down with the words "white terror", "black terror" and "facist terror" written on it.

Police arrested Koo on the spot
between Buildings A and B at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts and charged Koo for insulting the national flag.

A hearing was originally planned at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts, but was moved to the Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts on July 16.

Koo acted in person and applied for bail, but the judge refused his application. Koo would be held in custody until the hearing on 27 August.

74-year-old Koo Sze Yiu, a technician, was diagnosed with stage four colorectal cancer.

During the hearing on July 16, Koo Sze Yi stated in the hearing, "I did it on purpose but I plead not guilty." Koo Sze Yi believed that the result would be the same with or without an official solicitor in the case of insulting a national flag. Thus, he chose to act in person. He disclosed Albert Ho Chun-yan came with two lawyers to assist him, but he refused.

Koo has applied for bail because he needed medical treatment for cancer every day, but his application was rejected. Principal Magistrate
Ada Yim Shun-yee cited the reason that Koo might relapse into crime wheb on bail. As a result, the medical treatment for Koo needs to be arranged by the Correctional Services Department.

17th Day of Hunger Strike

"Cannot survive over there." This was the only thing a former detainee of Castle Peak Bay Immigration Centre (CIC) could recall at the first time he was contacted.

An indefinite hunger strike. Just because we want to survive, we want to leave the hellish environment, we want freedom. "The food no good. The food inside like Jelly. No medicine. Only one male doctor there." Being detained indefinitely at CIC is worse than in prison: sleeping with mice, drinking water by scooping it up from dirty buckets, getting Paracetamol only if you get sick or injured, and nothing akin to proper medical treatment... Living in an inhumane prison for months to years, , the detainees can only despair, to the point of self-harming to find a chance for release.

Through hunger strike to show their determination, many protesters have been very weak after a dozen days without food. By the 17th day, many people had written their suicide note: "Today, a detainee was sent to the hospital, and one here has been detained for 4 years. They have prepared for sacrification." Give me freedom, or give me death.

There is no way to know when [the detainees] will be released, it will be several years at least. Moreover, some of them are innocent and have no criminal record. Some even think that coming to Hong Kong, they will be protected by law from inhumane treatment. "At least in India, we can do farming. I miss chapati (Indian scone)." He told me about the good things in his hometown, but when the conversation came back to the situation of CIC again, it was really terrible.

Hunger strikes are not new. "Before many, but Nobody listen". Perhaps we all have too much to take care of in our lives, but some things are more pressing than the rest. A hunger strike every day represents every life's desire for freedom.

"Set them free" We can choose to ignore, but their hunger strike will continue.

China Banishes The New York Times Correspondent from China while Hong Kong Authorities Deny Visa Renewal

In response to the enactment of the Hong Kong National Security Law, The New York Times announced on July 14th the relocation of their digital news business from their Hong Kong office to Seoul, Korea.  The company also revealed that some of their staff were “faced with challenges” with their work visas in Hong Kong.  Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a US-based non-profit organisation promoting press freedom worldwide, issued a statement disclosing the Hong Kong government’s rejection to the working visa renewal of Chris Buckley, a senior journalist based in China.  The authorities, however, had yet to explain the reasons.

CPJ condemned the Hong Kong government for violating the promise of freedom of press to its people and destroying the free flow of information in Hong Kong, which had been critical to the city’s success throughout the years.  CPJ had since urged the immigration department to revoke their decision.

52-year-old Chris Buckley is a renowned foreign media journalist who has been stationed in Mainland China for an extensive 22 years.  His recent work includes exposés of the human rights issues in China’s Xinjiang province and reports on the coronavirus situation. This past May, mainland authorities had rejected the renewal of Buckley’s visa and demanded him to leave the country.  In early July, his visa renewal was also denied by the Hong Kong government, but according to CPJ, the authorities had not given any reasons.

The surprise screening of Kiwi Chow's documentary "Revolution Of Our Times" at the 2021 #CannesFilmFestival, one of the three major film festivals worldwide, had attracted widespread attention.

The film documents Hong Kong's 2019 Anti-ELAB movement, and its trailer was posted online on July 18, 2021. Many viewers commented that they could not hold back their tears, and thanked the director for recording history.

#KiwiChow had previously directed the short "Ten Years: Self-Immolator" and feature film "Beyond the Dream".

In an interview with Stand News, he responded to the warm reception from netizens: "Some things go both ways. Some people thanked me; I also want to thank everyone."

Many had expressed concern for Chow's personal safety. He had mentioned in previous interviews that he had to "prepare to face potential consequences." He did not want to dwell on what the "consequences" may be, lest he be dominated by fear.

Chow is currently in Hong Kong, and has no plans to leave. "I don't need to, nor want to, allow the fear of what hasn't happened - and only exists in my imagination - to control my decisions."

China should provide raw data on pandemic's origins - WHO's Tedros

The head of the World Health Organisation said on Thursday that investigations into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic in China were being hampered by the lack of raw data on the first days of spread there and urged it to be more transparent.

A WHO-led team spent four weeks in and around the central city of Wuhan with Chinese researchers and said in a joint report in March that the virus had probably been transmitted from bats to humans through another animal.

It said that "introduction through a laboratory incident was considered to be an extremely unlikely pathway", but countries including the United States and some scientists were not satisfied.

Lack of COVID-19 Raw Data in China Hinders the Investigation,
Tedros Adhanom: Virus Leakage From a Laboratory Has Not Yet Excluded

The pandemic has spread for over one and a half years. The WHO specialist team published a report in March indicating that the Covid-19 virus was “extremely unlikely” leaked from the laboratory. Tedros Adhanom, Director-General of the WHO, said on 15 July that the lack of raw data of the early epidemic situation in China affected the origin investigation. The claim of the virus outbreak due to the laboratory leak was excluded too early. He pointed out that he was an immunologist, and it is common to have accidents in the laboratory. The investigation of the source of the pandemic is important. In addition to preventing the next pandemic, it is also necessary to be responsible for millions of people who died in the pandemic.

Tedros Adhanom pointed out that the conclusion came too fast after publishing the report in March as China has not provided any original data to the specialist group yet. He then called for a continuous deep investigation. He reiterated a similar point of view at the press conference yesterday and hoped that China would cooperate to provide comprehensive information. It is too early to exclude the probability of the virus leakage from the Wuhan laboratory without sufficient information.

China snubs senior US official in worsening diplomatic stand-off

Beijing has snubbed the US by refusing to grant Wendy Sherman, deputy secretary of state, a meeting with her counterpart during a proposed visit to China that would have been the first top-level engagement since acrimonious talks in Alaska.

The US halted plans for Sherman to travel to Tianjin after China refused to agree to a meeting with Le Yucheng, her counterpart, according to four people familiar with the decision. China offered a meeting with Xie Feng, the number five foreign ministry official who is responsible for US affairs.

The Biden administration had been negotiating what would have been the first high-level engagement since their first meeting in Alaska, which erupted into a public spat between Antony Blinken, US secretary of state, and Yang Jiechi, the top Chinese foreign policy official.

U.S. Warns Businesses Over Rising Risks in Hong Kong Under China Crackdown

The Biden administration is warning American businesses about the increasing risks of operating in Hong Kong as China’s tightening grip on the city causes business conditions to deteriorate.

In an advisory issued Friday, the Biden administration cautions businesses and individuals working for them that they are subject to a restrictive national-security law that Beijing imposed on Hong Kong a year ago. The advisory cites the risks of electronic surveillance without warrants and of being compelled to surrender corporate and customer data to the government.

Canadian voters are likely to face foreign cyber interference in the next election, say cyber spies

Canadian voters are likely to face some form of foreign cyber interference ahead and during the next federal election, warns Canada's cyber spy agency, including false information about voter fraud.

However, that meddling is unlikely to match the scale and influence as seen in the U.S., says the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) in a new threat assessment report published Friday.

"We assess that an increasing number of threat actors have the cyber tools, the organizational capacity, and a sufficiently advanced understanding of Canada's political landscape to direct cyber activity against future Canadian federal elections, should they have the strategic intent," reads the report.
