Hospital Authorities Launch Political Revenge on Staff On Strike, Hong Kong Medical Doctors Fear to Become the Next Li Wenliang
A number of labor unions including the Hospital Authorities Employment Association (HAEA) have plans to go on strike in protest of the national security law in Hong Kong.
Fan Hung-Ling, chairman of the Hospital Authorities (HA) called the plan to strike "political", violating the neutrality of the HA, and that would not succeed.
The Hospital Authorities even hired a team of lawyers to study the legal issues related to the strike back in February.
Fan said that the human resource department would be responsible for following up on the previous strike, but he did not disclose the costs associated with hiring the lawyers.
According to Law Cheuk-Yiu, the vice-chairman of HAEA, many are concerned that after the implementation of the national security law, medical personnel will not be able to speak freely. The situation might get worse like what happened to the late Dr. Li Wen Liang in Wuhan China. Dr. Li was a whistleblower warning of the Covid-19 outbreak in China. He was accused by the Communist government for disseminating fake news and eventually died of the disease.
Similarly, Hong Kong microbiologist and SARS expert Professor Yuen Kwok-yung has been heavily criticized in China, after he criticized China’s handling of the pandemic in a paper. With the implementation of the national security law, Law said, no one can guarantee if medical staff can tell the truth in the future.
Law also criticized Fan, the chairman of the HA, for having a double standard when Fan claimed that medical staff should not talk about politics nor have a political stance. Law pointed out that how Fan hastily characterized potential strikes as "political strikes" is precisely being political and suppressive. Law reiterated that if medical staff are afraid to tell the truth because of the national security law in the future, it will ultimately affect the treatment of the patients.

Early in the morning at 6am on January 6, 2021, Yu heard loud thumps on her door followed by blaring commands, “Hong Kong Police. Open the door. Hong Kong Police. Open the door.”
Yu’s husband opened the door as instructed. Police rushed in to arrest Yu for her involvement in Legislative Council Primary Election in 2020.
Being arrested for the first time in her life, Yu faced severe charges of the "subversion of state power" under the #NationalSecurityLaw (#NSL).
Not only was she not afraid, but she also remained so calm that she has surprised evern herself.
Alone in the prison cell that night, she did not pity herself but other fellow protesters who were also being arrested. She thought to herself, “they must have faced much worse treatment than I do.”
Yu was known for sheding tears easily, but Yu didn’t cry at all after the arrest, “crying is giving in to the authorities.”
Even after she was released on bail, Yu didn’t think of stepping down from the frontline. Instead she seized the time to do as much as she could.
Yu often tells people that she has “no regrets”. In just over a year, Yu experienced a lot from partaking in anti-ELAB movement and involving in the primary election to being arrested. Yu said there were no regrets. With a smile on her face, Yu said, “I think I am stiff-necked.”
Nevertheless, Yu has once considered leaving Hong Kong. Now with her travel documents confiscated, Yu said resolutely, “I chose to stay put and I won’t regret. If any Hongkonger wishes to stay and continue the fight, I am willing to fight with them til the end.”

The Health Authority Employees Alliance (#HAEA) responded in a facebook post on March 18, 2021, reiterating their criticisms against the vaccination program. The medical workers' group pointed out again that the third-stage data remains insufficient for the Sinovac vaccine on patients above 60 years of age. Therefore they remain opposed to the Hong Kong government's call for citizens to receive the made-in-China Sinovac vaccine.
The group stressed that they had never been opposed to vaccination in general.
Meanwhile, the numerous deaths following vaccinations seem to have shaken the faith in the vaccine among senior citizens, although the government's expert committee insisted that the deaths are not directly related.
Speaking on a radio show on the public broadcaster RTHK, Lin Wai-yiu of the Society for Community Organization noted that they had been assisting seniors with vaccine-related inquiries. In the beginning of the program, most inquiries came from those who wanted to take the vaccine. Recently, however, half of the seniors who called wanted to cancel their appointments.
"They're cancelling in droves," Lin said. "Perhaps they read about the severe cases, and they were concerned whether their health condition is suitable for the vaccine."
He added that the government had cautioned that those with chronic illnesses should be be careful with the vaccine, but 70% of seniors often have some chronic illnesses. Additionally, some of them do not have the ability to make a medical judgment and cannot evaluate the risks involved; they would cancel their booking first, and make a decision later after consulting with their doctor.

On Sunday, May 30, 2021, the Hong Kong Hospital Authority Employees Alliance (#HAEA) set up a street booth in Causeway Bay, calling on Honngkongers not to surrender to political suppression.
The Hong Kong police banned a protest on the day and the annual candlelight vigil commemorating the victims of the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacere in Hong Kong's Victoria Park on June 4, 2021.
Soon after the pro-democracy representatives of the medical workers' union set up their booth at around 16:30, the police intercepted them and had their personal information recorded.
The police officers stayed and monitored the booth at close range in the shoppers' district.

On Sunday, May 30, 2021, the Hong Kong Hospital Authority Employees Alliance (#HAEA) set up a street booth in Causeway Bay, calling on Honngkongers not to surrender to political suppression.
The Hong Kong police banned a protest on the day and the annual candlelight vigil commemorating the victims of the 1989 June 4th Tiananmen Massacere in Hong Kong's Victoria Park on June 4, 2021.
Soon after the pro-democracy representatives of the medical workers' union set up their booth at around 16:30, the police intercepted them and had their personal information recorded.
The police officers stayed and monitored the booth at close range in the shoppers' district.
A black banner is displayed next to the booth. The words in white read "The Battle of Memory".

Hong Kong Authorities Warn Medical Workers' Union Over Film Screenings Related to Tiananmen Massacre
The Hospital Authority Employees Alliance (#HAEA) has been warned by the government's Office for Film, Newspaper and Article Administration (#OFNAA), when they organized screenings for the film "Conjugation" and the documentary "I Have Graduated".
Both films are related to the Chinese Communist Party's brutal crackdown on pro-democracy citizens at Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 4, 1989, in Beijing.
The Union recounted that their office was visited by the film censors without prior notice on the evening of May 27, 2021. The authorities demanded the Union to answer whether approval has been sought to show the films. Responding to media's inquiry, the film censors claimed that they received "inquiry" whether the screenings had followed the Film Censorship Ordinance.
The Union condemned the film censors for not showing their identification cards and taking photos of the office.
