Japanese Minister Criticises China's Attempts to Change the Status Quo. It hopes to join Five Eyes intelligence Alliance to Counter Chinese Threat.

Taro Kono, Japanese Minister of State for Regulatory Reform and Administrative Reform, attended a U.S.-Japan symposium on Friday (23 October). He stated that China's growing military power and making attempts to alter the status quo unilaterally, including East and South China sea, China-India border and Hong Kong, have led Japan interested in joining Five Eyes.

Nikkei, alongside Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a Washington, D.C. think tank, co-hosted the 17th symposium on "The era of growing U.S.-China rivalry and new administrations in the U.S. and Japan" in Tokyo. Former Japan Defense Minister Taro Kono participated in the meeting through video.

"China's military spending has increased 44 times in the last 30 years... Number of fighter jets, submarines, cruise and missile there's a wide gap between Japan and China," he said. With China's increasingly security load over Hong Kong, "the one country two systems, which had been the current state in Hong Kong, has been brutally destroyed... the international community has to get united and face with this issue.". Kono further said, "although Japan is not an Anglo Saxon nation, and yet Japan shares values with these nations 100%. Therefore Japan should work with the Five Eyes and I hope it will become the Sixth Eye in due course."

New Zealand Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta: China should respect Hongkongers, and the diplomatic policies must adhere to democratic principles

Five Eyes issued a statement last week with “serious concerns” on China disqualifying four Hong Kong Legislative Council members, and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded strongly and saying, “be careful of their eyes being poked blind”. Nanaia Mahuta, a New Zealand Foreign Minister who involved in issuing the statement, indicated that although China is the largest trading partner of New Zealand, we must adhere to democratic values and principles when carrying out the diplomatic policies, especially for the issues of Hong Kong. It is to ensure that in the transition of sovereignty, people’s past treatment is respected.

O’Toole Slams “Weak” Trudeau Again, Calls for Banning Huawei from 5G Projects in Canada in 30 Days

Erin O’Toole, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, called on the Liberal government on Sunday, 15 November to take a stronger stand on the use of Huawei’s technology and other China-related issues.

O’Toole revealed in an interview that the Conservative Party is ready to table a motion requiring the federal government to ban Huawei from participating in the construction of Canada’s 5G network within 30 days. He added that they will also call on the government to set out new strategies targeting such issues as China’s growing influence and its intimidation of Canadians.

Commenting that Trudeau had been too close to China in the past, O’Toole said the Liberal Party needs to be honest with Canadians and their allies. He continued that hundreds of Canadians are feeling the influence of the CCP at home and that the citizens need a responsible and principled leader.

When asked if Canada is ready for retaliation should it become harder on China, O’toole emphasized that Canada needs to cooperate with the rest of the Five Eyes to counter China in such areas as the economy.

“In the last 20 years, all parties, all democratic countries tried to engage, hoping that China, in the WTO and other things, would start moving towards respect for rule of law, for human rights. It’s gone the opposite,” said O’Toole. “So when things are not working after a generation, it’s time for some leadership to take a different approach.”

Chinese state media calls Australia a ‘gangster’ as trade war flares

China has accused Australia of being part of an “axis of white supremacy” because of our intelligence alliance with Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The Global times, state-run media mouthpiece, said Five Eyes was taking coordinated action against China. And description about Five Eyes in the Global times was “Five Eyes alliance members are all English-speaking. The formation of four states, except the UK, is the result of British colonisation.”

They continued to censure that the Five Eyes countries had been bought together by the US to become the “center of the West” and the bloc had become an organization targeting China and Russia.

New Zealand must be 'respectful' of China, even if there are disagreements - Nanaia Mahuta

The Foreign Affairs Minister says New Zealand and China's significant economic ties mean Aotearoa must be "respectful" of the Asian superpower, even if there are areas of disagreement between the two nations.

Nanaia Mahuta's latest comments come as more overseas commentators accuse Wellington of cosying up to Beijing and undermining its standing within the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network.

#China and #Solomon Islands Draft Secret #SecurityPact, Raising Alarm in the Pacific

//A leaked document has revealed that China and the Solomon Islands are close to signing a security agreement that could open the door to Chinese troops and naval warships flowing into a Pacific Island nation that played a pivotal role in World War II.

The agreement, kept secret until now, was shared online Thursday night by opponents of the deal and verified as legitimate by the Australian government...

it has set off alarms throughout the Pacific, where concerns about China’s intentions have been growing for years.

“This is deeply problematic for the United States and a real cause of concern for our allies and partners,” Charles Edel, the inaugural Australia chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said on Friday.

“The establishment of a base in the Solomon Islands by a strategic adversary would significantly degrade Australia and New Zealand’s security, increase the chances of local corruption and heighten the chances of resource exploitation.”

The leaked document states that “Solomon Islands may, according to its own needs, request China to send police, armed police, military personnel and other law enforcement and armed forces to Solomon Islands to assist in maintaining social order, protecting people’s lives and property.”//
