On 24 August 2019, pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong found in an actual “smart lamppost” installed in town an alleged link to a Chinese company called Shanghai Sansi. One role of the company to develop and manufacture the “smart pole” system equipped with RFID, video monitoring, sensor and LED technologies among others.
The smart lampposts installed in Hong Kong, among other surveillance circuits unknown, are feared by many for their potential monitoring and surveillance functions potentially supported by Chinese companies.
According to Apple Daily, protesters said that the web address “ticktack.tech/loginApp.html” showed a webpage for a Shanghai Sansi control system.
TickTack denies China's ownership of the company and states that they will stop supplying for the HKSAR government in their smart lamppost programme. (HKFP, 26 August 2019)

3. Why are people worried about Sansi's connection with Huawei, even when it is a project partnership?
It is connected to why the U.S. has banned Huawei, alongside Chinese companies like ZTE, Dahua, Hikvision and Hytera.
3.1 The link between Huawei and North Korea
“Internal documents show that Huawei has done business with a separate Chinese company, Dandong Kehua, which in November 2017 was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department for exporting and importing goods to and from North Korea trade seen by U.S. officials as -financing Pyongyang’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs.”

4. Why China might be watching you right now?
4.1 The US Case
US banned Huawei from US communications networks, due to the concern over national security threat.
In a similar vein, another telecoms giant ZTE and surveillance camera makers Dahua and Hikvision are also banned due to their connection with the Chinese government.
According to data from Forescout, there are at least 2,061 Dahua and Hikvision systems on U.S. federal government networks as of August 19. The actual figures could be higher. (Forbes, 21 August 2019)
4.2 Dahua is a surveillance camera provider worldwide specialized in Face Detection, Face Comparison, Intelligent Search, Face Image Search, Face Database Management, Mobile App Linkage and so on.
4.3 Hikvision as a surveillance camera provider worldwide as well as a subsidiary of a state-owned company.
Hikvision is a subsidiary of The China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC), which is founded and governed directly by the Minister of Industry and Information Technology of the Chinese government.
The chairperson of CETC Xiong Qunli is a party member in China.
4.4 China-owned CETC and its involvement in military and civil projects around the world
In addition, CETC has reportedly deployed a facial recognition system for facilities and centers in Uyghur.
According to Associated Press, an officer in the Hoten prefecture said “there are tens of thousands of cameras here. The moment you took your first step in this city, we knew.” This was already the scenario in 2017.
CETC has actually developed mobile app platform for the authorities to monitor the Uyghur population more “efficiently” (see Human Rights Watch's report).

Health Code is worse than National Security Law

Today, the government is still talking about privacy protection, however no one knows where one’s personal data will eventually be passed to.
A report on New York Times revealed that in China users' personal data were dispatched to Police Department. When anyone presenting his/her Health Code, the person’s location, personal details, and past activities could all be sent to the police server in one go. Regarding this, the Health Code application has never informed its users.
In other words, whether you have visited some pro-democracy shops, your daily routine, shops and places most frequented, people you have dined with and spoke to, all personal social activities could be blatantly examined and analyzed by data analytics, and these data could also be shared with the police one day.
Other than that, most people might have overlooked that the execution of Health Code could only be realised by hardened administrative grip and tougher policing efforts.
For instance, when carrying a red health code, you will be rejected from entering shopping centers, taken back home or even being arrested by “enforcement personnels”.
The whole world in fact, is concerned about growing public power amidst pandemic prevention, which in its "exceptional state", would be normalized as routine social order even in post-pandemic era.
A mega survelliance system that the totalitarian government failed to impose 50 years ago would now become true.

A researcher of the Human Rights Watch once said, “the outbreak of Coronavirus is becoming a milestone for China to carry out large scale surveillance.” (n.b. China has recently sanctioned the Chief Executive of Human Rights Watch.)
The long-deployed social credit system in China failed to perform rigorous surveillance, which was criticized for giving rise to “loopholes” during epidemic outbreak.
When designing Health Code, it was meant to gear up suvellience control. Its encroachment to people's privacy is appreciably worse than social credit system.
Today the government may collect your health data, personal data, and details of daily activity for Health Code. Soon afterwards, collecting people's vital data, contents of their online chats will no longer be a fantasy Arabian Nights.
Once the Health Code is put in place, you do not need a prison cell to be imprisoned as your home will become a prison, sparing also court deliberations.
