Heavy Police Presence Again Affects Businesses in Shatin New Town Plaza

21:27 | #Shatin New Town Plaza
There were a large number of police officers marching through Shatin New Town Plaza.

This has been a very common sight over the past few 'Sing with You' activities that were organized in malls. Their presence do not just drive out people and shoppers, but also forces every single shop to call it a day.

In addition, 7-9 PM is the peak hour for shopping malls, as most people would have knocked off from work, or are looking for places to dine at.

Hongkongers Toss Joss Money on the 63rd birthday of Chief Executive Carrie Lam

At Mongkok's Langham Place, citizens prepared a cake with the words “5 Demands, Not 1 Less” written at the top of it and pictures of Lam. They scattered hell notes all around the place (a form of paying respects to the deceased commonly practiced by Taoists in Hong Kong).

Reporters were coincidentally also kneeling down on the floor (also an act of showing respect to the deceased in the Taoist tradition) to capture photos and footages of the scene.

Police Swears At and Pepperspray Onlookers and Reporters

At Shatin's New Town Plaza, the police arrested a teenage boy. One police officer pressed the boy on the floor and his partner pointed pepper spray at the surrounding onlookers.

A woman immediately opened her umbrella to protect herself. Without any prior warning, the police pepper-sprayed the civilians and reporters at close range, while the officer kept on cussing hysterically.

Those who fell victim to the police pepper spray at the scene had their skin injured, as the burning sensation continued to hurt.

"The pain is really quite intense, I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight," said S, the person who filmed this.

Sing With You: Carrie Lam's Birthday Edition

Netizens initiated a "Sing With You" event in shopping malls across 9 shopping malls in Hong Kong, hoping to voice discontent over the city's Chief Executive Carrie Lam particularly on her birthday. Citizens started to unfurl protest banners and chanted slogans at around 7pm in Taikoo Shing, Kwun Tong, Shatin, Tsuen Wan, Causeway Bay, Mong Kok, Tai Po, Tuen Mum and Jordan.

An assortment of creative posters and printouts were seen across different districts of Hong Kong to 'celebrate' Carrie Lam's Birthday. At Mong Kok's Langham Place, civilians prepared a cake with the words “5 Demands, Not 1 Less” and tossed Joss, both actions revealed extreme grievances deep rooted in the community since the pro-democracy movement began last June.

Peaceful gathering again ended prematurely when large troops of riot police arrived at the scene, ordering civilians to leave, threatening that they could be fined flouting the anti-gathering ban. Journalists were continued to be targeted, e.g. in Shatin, plainclothes officers pepper-sprayed reporters nearby without giving proper prior warning.

Police Surround Agnes Chow and District Councillor's Anti-Health Code Booth

On the evening of Sept 7, 2020, Agnes Chow, former vice-secretary-general of Demosistõ and Yau Tsim Mong District Councillor Ho Fu-wing set up a street booth in Jordan, expressing their opposition to the government's implementation of health code.

This has attracted police attention. Chow and Ho were encircled by the police and everyone at the booth was ticketed for "violating the gathering ban".

In August, police arrested Chow for "breaching the national security law". Chow has to report to the police again on Dec 2, one day before her birthday. Chow had mentioned earlier that her only wish is to be able to return home and spend her 24th birthday at home.

Lester Shum's Hopeful Message from behind the bar: Resiliance in the Face of loss

Lester Shum Ngo-fai is one of the pro-democracy politicians, lawyers, scholars, journalists, NGO workers and activists being arrested by the National Security Police in Hong Kong over their involvement in a planned Legislative Council primary election in January 2021. The incident came to be known as the arrest of â€śHong Kong 47”, which symbolises the death of the city’s civil society.

On June 12, Shum found himself spending yet another birthday behind prison walls. A heartfelt message was shared on his personal social media account, managed by his devoted wife, seeking birthday blessings and support.

The Facebook post acknowledges that this marks Shum's third consecutive birthday spent in confinement, reminding us of the sacrifices he has made for his beliefs.

With a bittersweet smile, he has often joked about how time flies, going from a vibrant 27-year-old to now carrying the weight of turning 30. He seeks solace and support from the community, hoping to gather well-wishes that will uplift his spirit during this difficult time.

Shum yearns for a future where he can once again stand alongside his fellow "friends" in the struggle, reunite with his family, and celebrate together. He dreams of the simple joys of cutting a birthday cake, decorating a Christmas tree, personally presenting flowers to loved ones on Valentine's Day, and sharing a heartfelt meal with his parents on Mother's and Father's Day. Though these wishes may seem distant in their current circumstances, their hope for realization remains strong.

As we enter June 2023, Shum sends his sincerest wishes for peace to all. "Though we may lack material possessions, our hearts are filled with abundance," as Shum wrote in his post.
