Fear and Hope

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself"

Yet we have to stand for each other to be strong.

Remember those under trials or under bars.

Give them the support they need.

Don't let them fall into darkness and despair.

Pro-Democracy Activists Around the World Call On Freedom-Loving People to Boycott Disney's Mulan Played by Pro-Police Violence Chinese Actress

Disney's new film Mulan, featuring Chinese actress Liu Yifei, is available on the video streaming platform Disney+ since September 4, 2020.

The female lead Liu Yifei is known for her open support for the Hong Kong police as early as August 2019. On her Chinese social media account Weibo, Liu shared a post by China state-media People's Daily with the heading "I support Hong Kong Police, You can hit me now. What a shame for Hong Kong". Her pro-police stance has triggered calls for boycotting the film Mulan soon after Disney announced the cast.

On September 5, 2020, pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong on Twitter urged Hongkongers not to support the pro-police violence Liu and asked all freedom-loving people to boycott the film.

Veteran Chinese pro-democracy activist and writer Wang Dan also shared news about the boycott for Mulan in Taiwan after the film was released in theatre.

Wang reminded his readers:

"if you still remember how Hong Kong youngsters--many of them have not even reached their 20s--were violated by the police...

If you also think that celebrities like Liu Yifei who make money by forsaking their conscience do not deserve...

If you agree that justice and righteousness are worth more than a film..."

Wang said there is not much one can actually do for Hongkongers, but "at least one can stand against pro-Chinese Communist Party artists together".

Police Surround Agnes Chow and District Councillor's Anti-Health Code Booth

On the evening of Sept 7, 2020, Agnes Chow, former vice-secretary-general of Demosistõ and Yau Tsim Mong District Councillor Ho Fu-wing set up a street booth in Jordan, expressing their opposition to the government's implementation of health code.

This has attracted police attention. Chow and Ho were encircled by the police and everyone at the booth was ticketed for "violating the gathering ban".

In August, police arrested Chow for "breaching the national security law". Chow has to report to the police again on Dec 2, one day before her birthday. Chow had mentioned earlier that her only wish is to be able to return home and spend her 24th birthday at home.

Japanese Hardcore Punk Band FORWARD Dedicates Song ‘ACAB’ to Hongkongers

Japanese hardcore punk band FORWARD released a music video for their song "ACAB", which stands for "All Cops Are Bastards". They included large amount of scenes of police brutality in Hong Kong pro-democracy protests.

Watch the music video:
https://youtu.be/4PQ7IoF3SAk

Featuriing members of legendary Japanese 80’s hardcore band Deathside, the band dedicated this song to Hongkongers in pursuit of freedom and democracy.

In an interview with Unite Asia on September 18, 2020, the band said,

“It was very encouraging to see Hong Kong people stand up and fight for freedom in Hong Kong. Though we in Japan might not be in the same boat as Hong Kong, we felt it very much in our hearts. Police violence is absurd and ridiculous. With the ferocity of the assault on victims every day, we felt sorry for not being able to do anything. We are also extremely upset and saddened at the arrest of Miss Agnes Chow in August, and we became more enthusiastic about the people of Hong Kong. So we thought maybe the least we can do for the people of Hong Kong is something through our music.

We dedicate this song to the people who fight against brutality, and people who believe in humanity. There must be something that can be done and impact change by connecting with humanity wholeheartedly.

We are always with you.

香港加油!”

The use of the acronym A.C.A.B can be traced as early as to 1920. In the 1980s, the British punk band The 4-skins popularized the term in their song of the same name.

#AgnesChow Shares her Feelings on Social Media Before Trial

A couple hours before midnight on November 22, 2020, Agnes Chow Ting shared her thoughts on facebook before a court appearance on the next day with Joshua Wong Chi-Fung and Ivan Lam Long-yin.

Chow revealed that both Wong and Lam have decided to plead guilty and the trial would probably be closed soon. It also means that the three could be sent immediately to jail.

Facing impending imprisonment, Chow wrote, "Although I'm prepared, I still have fear. Nevertheless, what I am facing is not that huge compared to many friends. Thinking of this, it makes me work harder and be braver."

Chow mentioned another challenge laying ahead on December 2, 2020 when she has to report to police station for suspected violation of the National Security Law.

She closed her post with words of encouragement to overcome foreseeable challenges and stay strong.

Chow was previously hailed as the #RealMulan.

#JoshuaWong Reveals Abuse of Pro-Democracy Student in HK's Prison Before Own Trial

Pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong will stand trial on November 23, 2020 with fellow activists Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam. The three might face immediate imprisonment after appearing in court.

One day before the trial, Wong continued to call on the public and the international community to pay attention to the fight for democracy in Hong Kong.

In a Facebook post, Joshua Wong revealed an abuse case of a pro-democracy student in prison by a correctional officer.

Wong was informed that Tony Chung Hon-lam, a student activist and convener of #StudentLocalism who was arrested on National Security charges, went through unreasonable corporal punishment while detained in Pik Uk Correctional Institution.

Without any explanation, the staff demanded him to march for over four hours. Chung was exhausted to a point of having stomach cramps, and yet was still ordered to continue marching.

The correctional services officer Hyun Nga-tat, a Grade One Correctional Officer, is known to have commiited similar abuses. Hyun was infamous for abusing pro-democracy protesters under detention: He once forced those singing "Glory to Hong Kong" to slap themselves.

Joshua Wong ended the post by writing:

"Although there's a chance I could be imprisoned starting from tomorrow, my Facebook page will continue running.

I encourage whistleblowers to supply further information, and hope Yuen Long District councillors could arrange visits to Tony Chung. I believe his lawyer would also be visiting him at a later time.

I solemnly call on the Correctional Services Department to handle the matter seriously.  Tolerating intentional abuse by lower-level correctional staff against political prisoners will only bring public condemnation.  It has been half a year since abuses in prison came to light. Having it happened again would certainly reignite public anger, and may even lead to legal consequences."

Hong Kong Young Pro-democracy Activists #JoshuaWong, #AgnesChow and #IvanLam Tell Fellow Hongkongers Not to Be Afraid Before Their Trial

Pro-democracy activists Agnes Chow Ting, Joshua Wong Chi-fung and Ivan Lam Long-yin, who were former members of the now-disbanded Demosisto, will face trial at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court on November 23, 2020.

Ivan Lam, aged 26 years old, is two years older than the 1996-born Agnes Chow and Joshua Wong.

Seven years ago, the trio were featured in the cover story of City Magazine, under the title "The Reflection of Scholarisn: Young Power: Post-1990s in Hong Kong, Taiwan and China". As the founding members of Scholarism, the trio were interviewed by the magazine for their roles as secondary school students in rejuvenating social activism in the city.

Seven years later, the trio, like their fellow Hongkongers, faced great adversities in the fight for freedom and democracy. In addition to this case regarding a protest outside the police headquarters in June 2019, Agnes Chow is facing another charge of violating the national security law.

As the three planned to plead guilty in court on November 23, 2020, immediate detention might follow.

[Editor's update on Nov 23, 2020:

Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow and Ivan Lam are immediately detained after being convicted in court on Nov 23. They told Hongkongers to fight on.

Happy Birthday, Agnes Chow

Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Agnes Chow turns 24 years old on Dec 3, 2020; however, just one day ago, she was sentenced to 10 months in jail for "inciting, participating and organizing unauthorized assembly" near the police headquarters on June 21, 2019.

In the same case, former Demosisto members Ivan Lam and Joshua Wong were sentenced to 7 months and 13.5 months in jail.

After the verdict, Wong told Hongkongers, "it's hard to bear but we must go on." Chow broke into tears.

Chow joined social activism at the age of 15. From the 2012 Anti-National Education Campaign and the 2014 Umbrella Revolution to the 2019 Anti-Extradition Law Movement, Chow has always fought on and never given up her city.

In 2018, Chow even renounced her British citizenship to run in the Legislative Council By-election; however, her candidiacy was 'disqualified' by the authorities.

Court Rejects Agnes Chow's Appeal Application,
Chow: "It is my honor to be able to participate in social movements
"

Before her 24th birthday on Nov 27, 2020, Agnes Chow wrote an open letter. The following excerpt tells of her conviction in fighting for freedom:

"In the face of sentencing, I was very nervous and a little afraid. I am afraid that I cannot adapt to prison life. I am also afraid that I will have to celebrate my birthday (the second day of conviction) behind the bars.

On the eve of my 24th birthday, I was still recruiting gifts, I was going to film the unboxing of my gifts. But now, my birthday, work, and unboxing are gone, only the cold court papers and the anxiety of waiting for sentencing are left.

I have said several times before that it is my honor to be able to participate in social movements. I still hold this belief until today. Without the courage to join the social movement that day, I will certainly not be the one I am today. In a society full of fear nowadays, we have to experience a lot, and there are more pain and sacrifice. To me, this is also an ordeal.

I wish justice will return to society soon and I hope I can spend my 24th birthday outside the prison."

On Dec 7, 2020, four days after Chow was sentenced to jail for 10 months, she was in a two-person isolation room and the following are her words:

"On the day of sentencing, I was touched to see so many people came to see us off (I cried on the shoulder of an elderly woman who sat next to me), I could see very clearly what was written on the placards held by those chasing the prison van.

The letters I received during this period of time have been very encouraging to me, by knowing that people outside are still supporting me, I have gained the strength to endure the suffering. I hope people can also attend the trials of and write to other imprisoned protesters."

On Dec 9, 2020, the court in Hong Kong denied Agnes Chow's application for an appeal.

HK Authoroties' Jailing of Pro-democracy Activists Triggers International Uproar

During the demonstration outside the Police Headquarters on June 21, 2019, Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow, Ivan Lam and a large amount of protesters surrounded the building. The trio faced three charges of "inciting, organizing and participating in an unauthorized assembly". After pleading guilty, they had been remanded in custody for 9 days, before being sentenced.

On Dec 2, 2020, Magistrate Wong Sze-lai stated in the ruling decision at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts that the trio conspired and actively participated in the assembly, which caused roads blocked and potential risks, and wasted police resources. The trio were sentenced to 13.5 months, 7 months, and 10 months in jail, Agnes Chow's application for appeal was denied.

U.S. Speaker Nancy Pelosi released a statement, comdemning “China’s brutal sentencing of these young champions of democracy in Hong Kong" and calling it "appalling".

Pelosi's statement also said, "This injustice is clear proof that Beijing will stop at nothing to stamp out dissent and to destroy the freedoms and real autonomy guaranteed to the people of Hong Kong."

At the same time, the UK foreign minister, Dominic Raab, also responded. He said prosecutions must be fair and impartial, and the rights and freedoms of Hong Kongers upheld: “I urge the Hong Kong and Beijing authorities to bring an end to their campaign to stifle opposition."

#Japan Lawmakers and Scholars demands the release of Hong Kong's young pro-democracy activists

The Japan Parliamentary Alliance on China (JPAC), a Japanese cross-party organization formed by the members of the congress, held a press conference on Nov 30, 2020 at the House of Representatives of Japan to respond to the Hong Kong government's jailing of Joshua Wong, Agnes Chow, and Ivan Lam.

Several scholars spoke at the event, including Professor Suzuki Ken of Meiji University. Ken said that Agnes Chow has been speaking to the world through Japan. In order to rescue Chow, the Japanese civil society and the political sector must take action.

In addition, Chow had earlier been invited as a researcher to Hokkaido University, Professor Ken Endo expressed that the arrest was broadly equivalent to the arrest of a fellow colleague. He asked the Hong Kong government for her release and demands the Japanese government to respond to the incident.

JPAC mentioned that Agnes Chow and the others represent the young people in their fight for freedom and democracy, yet they were suppressed and investigated under Hong Kong’s National Security Law. He said “Why should those who call on the public to participate in peaceful protest be condemned? Will Hong Kong become a repressive state without freedom and hope if this continues? Won’t the hopes of young people and citizens be trampled?” JPAC requests Hong Kong’s neighbouring countries to join in protest against the suppression and demanded the prompt release of the three activists.

The press conference was co-organized by JPAC and a new organization called PomeLo (Project on meeting local parliamentary alliance for Hong Kong).

#PomeLo was formed by 22 members of the Japanese city and district council and is represented by Endo Chihiro and Yuko Nagumo. The goal was to create opportunities for direct dialogue between the people of Japan and Hong Kong, so that the Japanese society can better understand the thoughts and demands of Hong Kong people.

High Court Cites "Low Chance of Winning Appeal" as Reason to Refuse #AgnesChow's Bail Application

In December 2020, Agnes Chow, a former member of the now-disbanded Demosistō, was sentenced to 10 months in prison, after the court convicted her of "inciting and participating in an unauthorized assembly" during the June 21 police headquarters siege in 2019.

Chow was denied bail pending appeal before Magistrate Wong Sze-lai and was rejected by Judge Judianna Wai Ling.

The High Court issued their reasons for refusing bail on Dec 16, 2020, claiming that "Chow’s appeal did not have a very high or a reasonable chance of success, and even if Chow had served all or most of her sentence while pending appeal, it will not be considered unfair".
