Hong Kong Government urges a report on Ying Wah College students’ call for Hong Kong independence
Several Ying Wah College (YWC) students commemorated the passing of "Mr. Yellow Raincoat Man" Leung Ling-kit, and chanted slogans like “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times”, and “Hong Kong independence”.
The school later stated that it did not support such actions because of political neutrality. It also opposed any statement related to Hong Kong independence. The Education Bureau urged the school to follow up on this issue and submit a report.
Principal Allan Cheng resigned after the incident.

Principal of an elite school resigned amidst white terror and growing political oppression
Ying-wah College is a reputable elite school in Hong Kong with more than 200 years of history. It was caught in a political storm when several students were found paying tribute to a protester killed in the movement, Marco Leung on June 15 on school campus.
The school issued a memo immediately, disapproving the students’ behaviors, reiterating the school’s stance in upholding an apolitical position. It also rebutted chanting “Hong Kong Independence” slogan and initiating relevant discussions on school campus. In the memo, it pointed out that teachers attempted to dissuade their students, but not successful and that they are following-up with those students in accordance with procedures established for disciplinary support.
Despite that the ex-Chief Executive of HKSAR and Vice-Chairman of CPPCC National Committee, Leung Chun-ying and a pro-China website ruthlessly reprimanded the school.
School principal, Cheng Kwan-kit disclosed to school alumni that he has tendered resignation to the school board in May and is leaving Hong Kong for good in August.
