The Peopleā€™s Daily - Police released a video clip of a British consulate workerā€™s interrogation of soliciting prostitutes and claimed he was not tortured

(21 Nov)The BBC broadcasted an interview with Simon Cheng, a British consulate worker who was detained in Shenzhen by the Mainland Chinese authorities. Following the broadcast of the interview, the Peopleā€™s Daily released a 2-minute video clip today, claiming that Cheng solicited prostitute thrice within the span of two weeks, and ā€œconfessedā€ willingly without duress from the authorities.

In the two-minute clip, CCTV footages of the brothel on 23rd July, 31st July and 8th August were shown alongside a ā€œconfessionā€ clip, where noticeablely his words did not match the way his lips moved.

According to the CCTV footage, ā€œSimon Chengā€ was seen in a similar outfit: a black T-shirt, white shorts, white socks, black shoes and a backpack. Moreover, the footage only showed that he was entering a room, but with no sign of ā€œsoliciting prostituteā€.  In the footage dated 8th August, a family was seen entering the ā€œbrothelā€ when ā€œSimon Chengā€ left.

Official ā€œconfession videoā€ of Simon Cheng off synced

(21 Nov)Chinese state-run newspaper Peopleā€™s Daily has released video clips of Mr. Simon Cheng who seemingly entered a massage parlour thrice. Peopleā€™s Daily has also shown Chengā€™s confession video, with him claiming to feel regretful and guilty. But the video was noticed to have mismatching mouth movements compared with the words said.

Peopleā€™s Daily has uploaded an approximately two-minute-long video clip to Weibo (Chinese-based microblog platform). The first part consisted of CCTV clips showing Simon entering a clubhouse thrice between July and August. It has only shown that he entered the room, without any evidence that sexual services were provided at the venue. In the clip, we could even see that there were families going to the club together, with children seen in the lobby.

It was followed by the ā€œconfessionā€ of Simon Cheng, with him explaining that he hadnā€™t informed his family because he felt losing his face, ā€œso embarrassed, so guilty, because people who know me would not expect me to do this, and I have no face to see my girlfriend and my family. It is such a shameful and self-reproaching thing.ā€ He also said he felt so guilty that he was determined to correct himself and not to commit the same crime again.

Mystery of the Day - Was Simon Cheng involved with a prostitute? - Review by an experienced customer

(22 Nov) My friend Dodo Cat frequents brothels. He was shocked to find that he was unable to recognize the club Simon Cheng was seen going to in the CCTV clips released by authorities. Some equally ardent netizens quickly confirmed that the place was a massage parlor at Luohu District (An area near the boundary between Mainland China and Hong Kong), Shenzhen called Li Shui Yun Jian (éŗ—ę°“雲間). Dodo Cat, after confirming that the parlor was the one featured in the CCTV video, was relieved, ā€œNo wonder I couldnā€™t recognize it! This isnā€™t even a place that offers sexual services.ā€

200 Hongkongers Gathered in a Mourning Assembly in London to Pay Tribute to the Battles of the Chinese University and Polytechnic University

On Saturday afternoon (12th December) in British local time, a Hong Kong people's group "Justitia Hong Kong" held a "Mourning Assembly for the Battles of the Chinese University of HK and HK Polytechnic University" in London Leicester Square to commemorate the first anniversary of the Battles. During the rally, participants chanted slogans such as "Hongkongers, Keep it Up", "Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution of Our Times" and "Save 12 Hong Kong Youths", and sang Glory to Hong Kong. The rally ended with a two-minute silence and wreath-laying for those who sacrificed and paid for the Hong Kong democracy movement.

Simon Cheng Man-kit, a former British consulate trade officer who has been granted political asylum by the British authorities, spoke at the rally. He told the participants that "we are very fortunate to be in a free country today, and we should cherish our origins even more, as our homeland and our people are being persecuted.ā€

Civil Society Groups Issue Joint Statement, Concerns over Attacks on Hongkongers in UK

A statement was issued by Hong Kong-led civil society groups and its allies, following a violent attack on Hongkongers during a rally that took place in London on 27 November, 2021.

In the UK, Hongkongers and other members of East and South East Asian communities have been exposed to threats and intimidation.

There were messages circulating on #WeChat,a texting app from China, about putting a 'bounty' on Hong Kong pro-democracy activists #SimonCheng and #NathanLaw, offering Ā£10,000 to anyone who could offer their UK addresses.

Besides, there were also messages seeking to create "vigilante groups" to attack any HongKongers' groups in support of Hong Kong independence.

The statemdnt expressed grave concern over the tactics of intimidation which not only threatens the safety and security of Hongkongers and supporters of Hongkongersā€™ struggles; but also infringe Hongkongersā€™ fundamental right to freedom of expression.
