HK Police Order Bereaved Families Mourning the Lamma Ferry Collision Victims for the 8th Year to "Stop Acting"

On September 30, 2020, an open letter was issued by the families of the victims of the Lamma ferry collision, which took place on October 1, 2012.

The letter asks the Hong Kong authorities to reveal the truth behind the tragic collision that claimed 39 lives and do justice as had been promised.

It is revealed that after 8 years, the police investigation remains unfinished. Owing to the incomplete police report, death certificates cannot be issued to the victims. Without any concrete answer, the authorities forced their families to “let go and move on”.

8 years since their family members had passed away, the bereaved familes are still waiting for the truth they rightly deserved to be revealed.

In the latest open letter, the families demanded a thorough investigation of the cause of the collision, a full disclosure of the report and the conviction of the marine officers involved.

Every year, friends and families of the victims mourned at the Central Ferry Pier, where the fatal ferry had never arrived, bringing with them flowers and paper offerings.

For the first time after 8 years, on Oct 1, 2020, police interrupted the mournin and ordered the saddened families to “stop acting” and disperse.

Police officers even removed right away the families’ offerings to the deceased, causing an elderly burst into tears and faint on the scene.

Regardless, the police continued their action and fined the bereaved families for breaching the gathering ban.

8 Years After Lamma Ferry Collision in 2012: Police Did Not Complete Report, Pro-Beijing Lawmakers Ask Bereaved Families to "Let Go"

On October 1, 2012, the ferry "Lamma IV", carrying Hong Kong Electricity’s employees, their families and children, departed Lamma Island for the National Day firework display over Victoria Harbour.

Shortly after its departure, the boat was fatally collided by a Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry’s passenger vessel, "Sea Smooth".

This is reportedly the deadliest maritime incident in Hong Kong since 1971.

More than 100 people were flung into the water. 39 passengers of Lamma IV, including eight children, died in tragedy.

Lamma IV began to sink almost immediately, and the low visibility and obstacles on board made the rescue operation very difficult.

At the time of the incident, Hong Kong was celebrating China’s National Day, resulting in the area’s already bustling waters being unusually overcrowded.

An inquiry into the collision revealed that the safety standards on the Lamma IV was not properly enforced and there had been a "litany of errors".

The Hong Kong Marine Department was found turning a blind eye to these issues and continued to renew the license of Lamma IV.

The case has then been handed to the HK Police Force for further investigation. 8 years has passed, and no findings has ever been disclosed, not to mention a clear timeline or progress report of any form.

The families of the deceased have waited in grief and they are still waiting.

The Coroner's Court is unable to hold a hearing because the police has not completed their investigation.

Pro-establishment lawmakers brazenly suggested for the government to stop looking into the incident, saying that one should “let go”, “move on” and “be forward-looking”.

HK Police Accuse Resident Distributing Mooncakes of "having an extramarital affair"

On October 1, 2020, To Kwa Wan residents organized a Mid-Autumn Festival event with the theme, "never forget 12 Hong Kong youths" at the outdoor To Kwa Wan Playground.

Besides giving mooncake to residents, the organiser collected postcards to send to #12HongKongYouths who have been detained in China since August 23.

After the event had started for an hour, the police warned the residents on the spot of violating the group gathering ban. The police intercepted participants and threatened to issue fine tickets to civilians and journalists on the spot .

Super, a To Kwa Wan resident, was of those being stopped and searched by the police. She learnt about this event from the internet and felt that it’s a meaningful activity to attend. She helped distribute mooncakes when she passed by a playground.

While Super was being searched, a young police officer asked her directly she is married. "He said I must be having an affair after I said I am married," Super said. "Why did he need to say such bad things?” Sugar reiterated that the police officer’s attitude was terrible and she felt humiliated.

Although the residents were frightened by the massive number of police, “the police said that we scared residents. Inexplicable!” Super said.

A Letter from Prison: Imprisoned Pro-democracy Protester Wishes Hongkongers a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival

Here is the translation of the letter:

//To Hongkongers:

Never forget:

Please do not be so over-occupied by the pandemic that you forget over 9,000 arrestees who paid the price for Hong Kong's freedom and democracy, nor forget those jailed for the 2016 Lunar New Year protest. They are our youths and elders, who really love Hong Kong so damn much.

Never forget:

7.21, 6.12, 8.31 ... These dates are etched into my heart, never to be forgotten. Have Hongkongers forgotten them, I wonder?

No one is an island. Every youth and every elder who sacrificed their future for Hong Kong is one of us, an inseparable part of us. Hongkongers cannot forget them, or let their memory fade away ...

**

Wish everyone a happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

Keep the faith and stay safe, everyone!

[Editor's note: the two drawings on the right references the Lamma Island Ferry Disaster on Oct 1, 2012, in which a ferry carrying passengers to see the PRC National Day fireworks collided with with another and quickly sank. 39 lives were lost that night, and many Hongkongers have since treated Oct 1 as a day of mourning.

Though investigations pointed out negligence in the construction of the doomed ferry, to this date the police has not yet given any conclusions, leaving families of the deceased without answers for over 8 years.]

HK Police Deploys 8,000 Officers on China's National Day, Intimidating Journalists and Civilians

On October 1, 2021, the Hong Kong police force deployed 8,000 officers across the city. The authority claimed that they will patrol in what they claimed to be the "sensitive areas". The police also had the Golden Bauhinia Square and the Exhibition and Convention Centre in Wanchai, where the flag raising ceremony takes place, cordoned off. The day marks the 62th anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China (#PRC) by the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP).

In Causeway Bay, around #VictoriaPark and the SOGO Department Store, many uniform police were standing by. Some journalists had been stopped and checked for three times during 45 minutes.

The police asked a journalist, "why are you filming the police instead of the [Chinese] national flag on the National Day?"

50 Hong Kong police encircled 4 democratic activists calling for release of political dissidents

Today, on China's National Day (Oct 1), Members of the League of Social Democrates (#LSD) took to the streets to protest for democracy, just as the group had done on Oct 1 in past years. Although several key members of the pro-democracy party have been put in jail on National Security charges, four other members came out to march, determined to carry on the protest tradition.

Not intimidated by the 50 police officers surrounding the four of them, Chairperson Chen Po-yin said that they will carry on delivering their mandate in defiance. "Only a few of the familiar faces (of the group) are left, which means the rest of us carry an ever greater responsibility."

In past 6 months, LSD members and vocal social and political activists that have been imprisoned include Raphael Wong Ho-ming, Leung Kwok-hung (Long Hair), Jimmy Sham Tse-kin, Alvin Ng Man-yuen, and Figo Chen Ho-hen.

Czech Terezín Memorial Exhibits Portraits of Hong Kong #PoliticalPrisoners

A painting installation by Hong Kong artist #LorettaLau depicting some Hong Kong political prisoners will open on 7 October 2021 in Terezín Memorial, a former #NAZI concentration camp in the #CzechRepublic.

Lau was invited to take part in Fortress 1980 exhibition and human rights conference. Titled ‘The Cells’, the paintings are installed in solitary confinement cells, a stark reminder of ‘the nature of the dictators has never changed,’ said Lau.

'The Cells' features 13 political prisoners under the Hong Kong National Security Law, including Jimmy Lai Chi-ying, Tonyee Chow Hang-tung, Tony Chung Hon-lam, Agnes Chow Ting, and more.

A faint portrait of each prisoner is painted on a piece of white door curtain installed at the entrance to a solitary confinement cell.

To have a clear view of the portraits, visitors must walk into the cells. Looking from inside out, the images will be lit up by the light outside.

The design aims to arouse the visitor’s empathy with those imprisoned. ‘I hope by having them walking into the cells, they will have a direct and personal experience of how being confined feels like,’ said Loretta.

*Note: The artist Loretta Lauwill stage a live performance at Terezín Memorial at 5pm Thursday Oct 7 (HKT 2300). She will use her movements and voices to commemorate the countless people who suffered in the concentration camps, to resonate between the tragedies in the past and the happening misfortunes.

The performance will be streamed live at: https://youtu.be/IZ6b-KPctOk

DoD trying to keep China from accessing critical U.S. space technology

DoD (Department of Defense) created the trusted capital program due to concerns that China is using its financial clout to access segments of the U.S. defense industrial base.

The trusted capital office encourages venture capital firms to get vetted by DoD so they can be declared sources of “clean capital.” Space is a sector of interest as billions of dollars pour into the industry, making it harder for the government to identify so-called adversarial capital.

Another piece of of DoD’s supply chain security involves making sure that contractors know the sources of their software and components.
