The relations between NBA and China seems to remain tense, despite Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey's backing down from his Tweet support of pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong.
Government-run China Central Television (CCTV) still does not broadcast a single game of NBA this season, with Chinese media conglomerate Tencent not offering its customers the subscription to the full NBA slate. Those actions of disapproval by Chinese stakeholders might have costed financial loss for the NBA teams. However, the outbreak of coronavirus might be a turning point of the relations between China and NBA which has pledged US$1.4 million to support relief efforts in China’s Hubei province.

The website then briefly reopened orders for personalised apparel with “FreeHongKong” and explained that there was a technical problem previously. But four days later, the customisation feature was completely removed from the website.
An NBA spokesperson confirmed to Fox News that the apparel customisation feature was temporarily removed from the website since there were “attempts to include violent, abusive and hateful messages on personalised NBA jerseys”, yet no explanation was offered on the inappropriate language in question. Republican Senator Josh Hawley accused the NBA of carrying out censorship like China and not daring to offend Beijing.
Fox News pointed out that before the “FreeHongKong” controversy, the personalised apparel feature had allowed customisations of all sorts of texts, even violent messages such as “Kill Cops”.
A Stand News reporter logged into the NBA website on Friday morning and found all personalised apparel had been taken off the shelf. The only customisable item still available was the Los Angeles Lakers bear, but the text limit had been changed from 12 characters to 11, making it impossible to print the “FreeHongKong” slogan. He recently published a post on #Twitter that China cannot affect the US externally but internally. He uses #NBA as an example -- he was a basketball player being sold to #HoustonRockets, then soon be a free agent. The whole process is only 10 minutes.
During the #AntiELAB movement in Hong Kong in 2019, the then-Houston Rockets manager once confessed before the CCP government due to showing support to HKers.
