“We are not __”: HK Lady Liberty Exhibition

Part 2: Who would protect our land if we give up?

The building of the “#LadyLiberty" statue and its transportation were explained in videos. The blueprint and 3D printing models walked the visitors through the technology involved. Different “Lady Liberty HK” statues were also shown in form of figurines portraying different roles in the pro-democracy movement.

As the center of the exhibition, the remaining parts of the statue were featured and accompanied by the “Liberty Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times” flag.

Beside news clippings to highlight the important events in the ongoing movement, a Lennon Wall wss set up for visitors to express themselves.

At last, the staircase was decorated with words of encouragement: “There's hope in Hong Kong...We can change the world."

With the determination and perseverance symbolized by the Lady Liberty, one possible title of the exhibition is perhaps “We are not giving up” .

Separation from Families and Freedom Despite the Full Moon

A couple looked at their city on top of Lion Rock on the Mid-Autumn Festival that symbolizes reunion.

They listened to the theme song of a local TV drama which is famous for the line "our city is dying", as the light box next to them displayed words and images alluding to Hongkongers' concern about the 12 Hongkongers detained in China and other injustices in society.

"Under the full moon
I stand with my love
Upon the rock of endurance

The 12 are still lost
Nothing lasts forever
Just as dawn would come once more

May I cherish this moment
Hold you tight from the side
So that I don't fret
So that you stay in my mind evermore"

On the evening of June 9, 2021, some pro-democracy citizens climbed up the local mountain Lion Rock and displayed LED lights that read "Faith" and "Free Hong Kong". The hand gesture "Five Demands, Not One Less" and the "liberate Hong Kong" flag could also be seen.

Supermarket in HK Suspected of Self-censorship After Removing Products Praising “Hong Kong is Beautiful”

Photo: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/30257

Watsons water has rolled out a series of new designs at the beginning of June 2021. The new designs are bases on Hong Kong scenaries including photos of the well-known Lion Rock and the night view of Pearl Harbour that were taken by international award-winning photographer.

The taglines on this design include “Hong Kong is so beautiful”, “This is our root no matter where we are”, “There is something called perseverance”.

Hpwever, on June 18, 2021, #PARKnSHOP, a supermarket chain in Hong Kong, has reportedly removed all products containing the new design from all stores all of a sudden.

It was not clear whether they were removed because of a product recall or due to self-censorship as those slogans were sometimes used during pro-democracy activities.

According to the spokesperson of Watsons, the new designs were one of the themes in the company’s eco-friendly promotion this year to encourage the love of the earth and natural environment. No explanation was provided as to the reason and the exact quantity of the products being removed.

May we share in this beautiful sight,
Under the waning moon we wait,
Until she shines again, so full and bright"

#Hongkongers create human chain and cheer “May Glory to Hong Kong” amidst white terror and #CCP grip

In Hong Kong, on New Year's eve (December 31, 2021), many citizens went up to the #LionRock to count down to the year 2022. Among them, some brought neon light signs that read “GLORY HK” and “FREE HK”.

While some citizens on the site were occupied taking pictures, others lighted up their handphones to form a human chain. Just like the pro-democracy “Hong Kong Way” demonstration in 2019, a line of human chain was soon created, displaying the outline of Lion Rock with the light from the mobile phones.

Together Hongkongers counted down and cheered “May glory to Hong Kong” to welcome 2022.

On the hilltop, some elderly walked by and uttered words of encouragement to the youngsters, “hang on,” “don’t give up”, while others passed on drinks to them.

Down the hill, some citizens raised laser pointers and pointed towards the hill top to echo and show their support.

[Editors' notes: Inspired by the Baltic human chain in 1989, the “Hong Kong Way” was organized by pro-democracy HongKongers in August 2019 during the #AntiELAB Movement.

The human chain expresses Hongkongers' yearning for freedom and basic human rights. Tens of thousands of Hongkongers lined up on pavements, overpasses, waterfronts and parks, snaking a line of nearly 30 miles (50km) long through Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories.

"Glory HK": #Hongkongers Raise Glowing Signs amid Storm Clouds on Lion Rock

In Hong Kong, a group of pro-democracy citizens braved the heavy rain and hiked to the top of the #LionRock on the evening of June 9, 2022.

On the mountain, they displayed the light signs that spelled "Glory HK", to commemorate the third anniversary of the 2019 June 9 #AntiExtradition protest march.

When the group reached the summit, however, the hill was shrouded by dense clouds and heavy rain, with a thunderstorm warning from the weather observatory. After discussing their options, the group decided to carry through and set up the sign while they waited for the clouds to clear. Their patience was rewarded after waiting for over an hour; the clouds cleared for a brief moment, and Hong Kong's city lights come into view behind their glowing sign.

Speaking to a reporter, the organizer likened the weather atop the mountain to the outlook for Hong Kong's future: full of dark clouds, but there will be light for those who hold on to the end.

"The oppression keeps Hongkongers from speaking our minds, and even rational debates on the Internet risk violating the authority's red line; however, the beliefs of Hongkongers 3 years ago surely remain engraved in our hearts, and they will never change," said one of the participants.
