Hongkongers: On Fear

“You have your fears. So do I.
The fear of pain, the fear of bullets, the fear of being bludgeoned.
But I want freedom. I want our martyrs acquitted!"

“The coldness of justice is not as concerning as compared to the coldness of our hearts -
Keep the fire burning.”

The old Hong Kong will be but a memory under the National Security Law. Yet, in the ruins, an inextinguishable fire burns. Darkness is but the absence of light. Likewise, the darkness brought upon by evil dictators shall perish in the presence of the light of freedom and truth.

Arise! Ye who refuse to be slaves!

In Causeway Bay, an unknown citizen painted graffiti on the side of a footbridge that reads “Arise! Ye who refuse to be slaves!", a shoutout to the opening lyrics of the Chinese National Anthem, the March of the Volunteers.

11.11: One year after Police Shooting Pro-democracy Students in Sai Wan Ho

On Nov 11, 2019, Hong Kong citizens launched "three strikes" during the Anti-ELAB Protests. Road blockage occurred in many districts.

At 7am that day, a traffic police officer fired live rounds at two unarmed youths, who were wearing black, at close range, causing critical injuries. The incident brought to a citywide discontent toward the police brutality.

Moving on to the one-year mark of the police shooting, citizens sprayed graffiti at the scene of incident.

Phrases like "ideas are bulletproof" could be seen at the neighbouring footbridge.

The 21-year-old wounded student has been charged for obstructing or resisting a police officer, attempted robbery and escaping from legal custody.

Former legislator Ted Hui Chi-fung tried conducting private prosecution against the police officer who shot the student with live round. However, the Department of Justice intervened and ordered to withdraw the prosecution.

First Anniversary of CUHK Defense War: “Hong Kong Independence” Slogan Reappears but is Quickly Removed

On November 12, 2019, pro-democracy Hongkongers launched the Operation Dawn across different districts.

Debris was thrown to train tracks and Tolo Highway. At the No. 2 bridge of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK), the police fired tear gas grenades towards civilians triggering the “CUHK Defense War”.

One year on, graffiti appeared in many places on the CUHK campus on the early morning of November 12, 2020.

Among them, the words “Hong Kong Independence” appeared on the external wall of the University Library located in the Central Campus; however, it was soon covered up with paint.

Traces of Graffiti in Hong Kong: "If we can write them easily, then we can write them more”

When passing the streets of the Hong Kong, be it inside the tunnels, the flyovers, or by the roads you drive by every day, it is hard to miss the many grey cover-up patches on the pale walls and washed-out letterings.

These marks are some of the many traces left in the city, reminding Hong Kong people of what they went through two years ago.

MC Yan, the lead singer of local Hip Hop band #LMF , also known as "Asia's first graffiti artist", calls these "Cleansed Fonts” (清潔體), because they are presenting the original message in a fresh new way.

Since Beijing's implementation of #NationalSecurityLaw in Hong Kong on June 30, 2020, the words "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times" have since been considered taboo.

MC Yan feels that it is a foolish move on the regime, because “they have highlighted something, and given people a target to be directed against.”

In fact, he feels that it has become an opportunity to inspire people to think. This has also led to many derivative creations; people were inspired to arrange shapes like triangles and circles together to remind people of the popular “revolution” slogan.

“On the surface, it looks like the movement has become scattered, but in fact, the symbols are still there, the idea lives on,” said MC Yan.

When asked whether the change from words to symbols is a submission to the regime, MC Yan replied by saying that, “when these ideas are turned into symbols, it is being simplified but it doesn’t mean that they were faded”.

He believes that using symbols only made it faster and easier for people to write, “if we can write them out so easily now, then we can write them more.”
