Medical Resource Shortage in Hong Kong: Hospital Staff Forced to Use Less Masks, Drink Less Water and Limit Bathroom Breaks

It had become clearer by the day that Hong Kong public hospitals are low on protective gear for its staff, especially in N95 masks, surgical masks and hazmat suits.

Medical workers on the frontline in Hong Kong revealed that the North District Hospital requested the Hospital Authority (#HA) for more of the 1870+ N95 masks, yet the HA had yet to replenish their supplies. Since the 1870+ masks fit most staffers, they ran out really quickly. Most workers thus had to use other models which did not fit snuggly on their faces, which had potential problems like air leakage or being too tight on the nose, all of which are crucial in ensuring maximum protection.

Currently, Tuen Mun Hospital only allowed phlebotomists to use one mask per day, in order to save the little supplies they have got left. This caused some staff members to drink less water and limit their bathroom breaks so they don't have to change their protective wear.

The Hospital Workers' union were concerned about the lack of protective gear supply and how that would endanger the staff and patients and increase the chance of contamination.

Thousands of medical workers went on a 5-day-strike last week to get the government to close the borders, as well as to request the Hospital Authority to publish the numbers of protective gear they have in stock, in order to make sure frontline staffers have enough of what they need to protect themselves and the patients. The Department of Food and Hygiene and Hospital Authority claimed on the 6th Feb that they have enough supplies to last three months but refused to publish actual numbers. On the 8th Feb, soon after the strike was halted, the HA then overturned their previous claim, stating that there were only 1 month worth of surgical masks left.

The Hospital Authority Employee Alliance (#HAEA) questioned how the number of supplies can drop from 3 months to 1 month in merely 2 days, and whether the HA was attempting to deceive their staff.

Police Detain and Add "Riotting" Charge to Hong Kong Pro-democracy activist

Pro-democracy activist Owen Chow was detained by the police after Chow reported to the police station on Feb 10, 2021, according to his bail condition.

Chow was previously arrested for participating in the primary election of the democracy camp in 2020, which the authorities claimed as a "breach of the #NationalSecurityLaw". On Feb 10, 2021, Chow received an addition accusation of "rioting", for purportedly entering the Legislative Council Building on July 1, 2019.

Since August 2020, Chow has been providing assistance for the families of the 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers who were arrested and jailed in China.

Protest Scenes in Myanmar Recall the Fight for Freedom in Hong Kong and Thailand

On Feb 10, 2021, Myanmar civilians protested against the military junta on the fifth consecutive day. In the face of violent suppression by the police, protesters wittingly responded with a sense of humour.

Some protesters dressed up as Harry Potter, drag queens, brides and in different cosplay costumes. Creative protest slogans were also sighted: "I always hate you General," "I should be at home watching BL series, but I'm here for this shit," and "Don't fuck my country, fuck my ex" (sic.).

Meanwhile, medical workers have been on strike for one week. All walks of life, from civil servants, fire fighters, farmers, monks and engineers to bankers have joined the protests. According to the local media, at least 20 uniform police took part in a protest in Loikaw. The military junta, however, denied the claim in a statement, claiming those were civilians.

After the police had shot live rounds at the crowd on Feb 9, the protesters geared up with yellow helmets and eye goggles the next day, reminiscent of the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong and Thailand from the past two years.

Hong Kong Authorities Charge Pro-democracy Radio Host for
"Acting with a Seditious Intention"

#Giggs, a radio host in Hong Kong, was charged with four counts of "acting with a seditious intention" for an online programme he hosted between August and October 2020.

Despite the fact that the alleged offences fall outside the #NationalSecurityLaw, the case was handled by the national security office in Hong Kong.

National Security Judge and chief magistrate #VictorSo said the court didn't have sufficient grounds to believe that Giggs, will not re-offend if granted bail.

The authorities accused Giggs of intending to "bring hatred or contempt against" the Chinese and the Hong Kong SAR governments and inciting Hong Kong people to "revolt like the Ukrainian" which forced their "Chief Executive to self-exile". The vocal radio host was also criticized for showing support for the primary election of the pro-democracy game and "encouraging citizens to attend illegal assembly".

The authorities also condemned Giggs for regarding Hong Kong and Mongolia as independent entities, distorting the national flag and the Chinese authorities in his comments.

The case was adjourned to May 10, 2020 awaiting further police investigation.

Pregnant Woman Subjected to #PoliceBrutality in Hong Kong Makes Formal Complaint

While in her seventh month of pregnancy, a woman surnamed Lau was handcuffed and dragged along the street by Hong Kong police on 20 January. The police insulted her by calling her names like "fatso", even though the woman clearly told them she was pregnant.

Three days later, Ms Lau suffered premature delivery and severe bleeding. Her son, currently in critical condition, had to be monitored in the intensive care unit.

On Feb 10, 2021, Ms Lau made a formal complaint to the police complaint unit. She also handed in videos captured by surveillance cameras and passers-by as evidence.

Ms Lau sobbed when speaking to the media. She said the Police Force had never sent their regards and she hopes that the complaint would be handled in a fair manner.

New Cabinet Member of PolyU Student Union vows to continue fighting on student front for freedom and democracy

In November 2019, Hong Kong police violently attacked pro-democracy protesters in the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) and Polytechnic University of Hong Kong (#PolyU).

In #PolyUSeige, more than a thousand protesters were arrested and over 300 underaged had their personal information marked down by police.

More than a year later, the new cabinet of #PolyU Student Union was formed. It was said that the PolyU student union cabinet and the #CUHK student union cabinet would perhaps the only two cabinets to be formed this year.

Different from the #CUHK “senior” cabinet, which was formed by Year 3 students, 12 of the 17 cabinet members of PolyU student union are “underaged”, including the President and Vice-Presidents.

The newly elected President, Alan Wu, is a year 1 freshman. He admitted in bitter grin that it has been a “wasted freshman year” due to the coronavirus pandemic. Not only that they have been deprived a normal senior college life and University life, but they have also witnessed their classmates being violently pinned to the ground by riot police, arrested and charged with riots.

During anti-ELAB movement, some of their friends even sacrificed their lives, leaving behind last words for people to carry on protesting.

They described themselves a generation of “distorted youth” by authoritarianism. For the same reason, the three cabinet members of PolyU student union stood up for pro-democracy movement on student front.
