Steveston-Richmond East MP Kenny Chiu was elected as the chair of the Canada-Hong Kong Parliamentary Friendship Group. According to a media statement, the group’s intention is to “promoting goodwill” between Canada and Hong Kong.

Chiu said they recognised over 300,000 Canadians in Hong Kong which is a large international investment hub. He added that the National Security Legislation “does not respect the rule of law or Hong Kong’s judicial independence” - important foundations a “functional and valued international partner” needs to have and maintain.

Canadians who say they’ve been targeted by foreign agents want coordinated response

Four victims of threats and intimidation by Iranian, Chinese and Russian foreign agents joined a Parliament Hill press conference on Thursday, where they gave harrowing accounts of harassment by foreign agents operating on Canadian soil. They said Canadian domestic police forces have proven ill-equipped to deal with their concerns.

These four people are husband of a deceased in the Boeing jet fired by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, members of Canada’s Tibetan and Uighur communities, a Canadian filmmaker and journalist who specializes in Russia.

A private member’s bill from Conservative MP Garnett Genuis calling on the federal government to take stronger action against foreign interference. Conservative Party had a motion in the House of Commons to call on the Liberal government to take a harder line against national security threats from China.

The Canadian Front | 20-year-old first aider arrested at PolyU, appreciating the true value of freedom upon return to Toronto

During November in 2019, Hongkongers stayed up late into the nights; before the defence of Chinese University could end, the “Siege of PolyU" had begun. The protesters did not rest after leaving CUHK and rushed to the walls of the red-bricked campus to support their fellows.

Among them was Logan, a 20-year-old volunteer first aider. Logan was arrested at PolyU, despite being devoted to saving lives. After being released on bail, he returned to his birthplace in Canada.

Michael Spavor: Canadian spy trial in China ends without verdict

A Canadian businessman Michael Spavor was arrested two years ago along with fellow Canadian and former diplomat Michael Kovrig.

Mr Spavor's trial took place in the northern Chinese city of Dandong and just lasted for two hours. A group of foreign diplomats gathered outside the court, but all of whom were denied entry. Canadian diplomats were also refused access to Mr Spavor before his trial, and that they were "disappointed by the lack of transparency and the lack of access". The closely-watched trial ended with no verdict.

Mr Kovrig is due to go on trial next week. Both Canadians have been held in prison since their arrest in December 2018.

Trudeau government threatens Halifax Security Forum over proposed Taiwan award

The organizers of one of the world’s most prestigious defense gatherings are in the midst of an uncomfortable international standoff between the Canadian government and China over a major award they had planned to give to the president of Taiwan.

The standstill, which is ongoing and has not been previously reported, has created tension between the Halifax International Security Forum and the Canadian government, which is a major sponsor of the forum.

Late last year, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter, the forum’s organizers decided to give its John McCain Prize for Leadership in Public Service to Tsai Ing-wen, the president of Taiwan. Cindy McCain, a member of the forum’s board of directors, greenlit the decision to honor Tsai with the prize named after her late husband.

China is betting that the West is in irreversible decline

ITS GAZE fixed on the prize of becoming rich and strong, China has spent the past 40 years as a risk-averse bully. Quick to inflict pain on smaller powers, it has been more cautious around any country capable of punching back. Recently, however, China’s risk calculations have seemed to change. First Yang Jiechi, the Communist Party’s foreign-policy chief, lectured American diplomats at a bilateral meeting in Alaska, pointing out the failings of American democracy. That earned him hero status back home. Then China imposed sanctions on British, Canadian and European Union politicians, diplomats, academics, lawyers and democracy campaigners. Those sweeping curbs were in retaliation for narrower Western sanctions targeting officials accused of repressing Muslims in the north-western region of Xinjiang.

China applauds Canadian senators who voted against genocide motion as 'people of vision'

China's foreign ministry is praising Canadian senators who voted down a motion to label the Chinese government's treatment of Uyghurs as genocide — calling them "people of vision" who see through "the despicable schemes of a few anti-China forces."

A spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry said Wednesday that the defeat of Motion 79 — which called on the Senate to recognize that China's government is perpetrating a genocide against Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims — shows that the "the hype of 'genocide' in Xinjiang is unpopular and doomed to fail."

"We urge some Canadian politicians to respect facts, stop the clumsy trick of attacking China for their selfish political gains, and stop interfering in China's internal affairs under the pretext of human rights," said ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin.

Canadian voters are likely to face foreign cyber interference in the next election, say cyber spies

Canadian voters are likely to face some form of foreign cyber interference ahead and during the next federal election, warns Canada's cyber spy agency, including false information about voter fraud.

However, that meddling is unlikely to match the scale and influence as seen in the U.S., says the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) in a new threat assessment report published Friday.

"We assess that an increasing number of threat actors have the cyber tools, the organizational capacity, and a sufficiently advanced understanding of Canada's political landscape to direct cyber activity against future Canadian federal elections, should they have the strategic intent," reads the report.

Canadian military officer calls for a probe into a ground zero 'Covid' outbreak at Wuhan forces games TWO MONTHS before world was alerted to the 'mysterious new illness'

A Canadian military officer who fears he was at the 'Ground Zero' of Covid two months before China officially acknowledged the virus has demanded an investigation into the suspicious outbreak of illness there.

The long-serving officer, who cannot be named as he is still in the forces, was among the scores of athletes who fell sick with a debilitating illness after attending the World Military Games in Wuhan in October 2019.

He said foreign competitors found the city of 11 million people 'like a ghost town', and so many cases of a mysterious virus afflicted the Canadian team that a quarantine section was set up on their military flight back home.
