Victim of 7.21 Yuen Long Mob Attacks Persists in Seeking Justice Despite the Threat of Arrest

Mr So, a chef in Hong Kong, has wounds all over his back resulting from the attack by white-clad mobs at “Kai Tei” in Yuen Long on 21 July 2019. He opened a thread in LIHKG, an internet forum, on the morning of August 26, 2020, with a heading of “just in case I am arrested. Let me create a post here first”. This came after the police had arrested pro-democracy lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting, who had been investigating the mob attacks on that day.

In the post, Mr So wrote that he felt shocked, confused and angry about the arrest of Lam, but expected more people to be arrested. He believed that he also had to be ready that he might be arrested one day. Mr. So emphasised he would continue striving for justice and truth through legal procedures, “It’s up to them if they want to arrest me. It’s easy to find a stick to beat a dog.”

Mr. So was off from work on 21 July, 2019 when he was beaten by 20 people after leaving a shopping mall. “I was not capable and had no chance to hit back,” he said.

He was not worried and did not regret to speak openly, “I won’t commit suicide and do not have any mental illness.” He won’t abandon his right striving for the rights to justice and truth of “a group of victims and all Hongkongers”.

While responding to an inquiry of the Stand News, Mr So expressed that he felt ridiculous towards the arrest of the pro-democracy lawmaker Lam Cheuk-ting by the police. “A plaintiff becomes the defendant and Department of Justice (DoJ) withdraws prosecution, so I think I might be the next target. That’s why to sign a note for investigation by opening a forum in LIHKG.”

Proposed laws empower Payne to block deals involving foreign nations

The Australian Federal Government is moving to introduce sweeping new laws which would give it the power to block deals involving foreign nations.

Under the Foreign Relations bill, Australia's Foreign Minister can terminate any existing agreements, such as Victoria's controversial Belt and Road deal with China, if they are considered adverse to Australia's foreign relations or are inconsistent with foreign policy.

UN Refugee Agency in Hong Kong Refuses to Accept Petition Letter from Local Church in Support of Belarus

After the Belarusian presidential election on August 9, Lukashenko, the five-term president, was 'elected' again, which immediately triggered demonstrations against his rigged election win and police violence. The protests in Belarus found resonance in Hong Kong.

Reverend Roy Chan of Hong Kong's Good Neighbour Northern District Church petitioned to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees office, handing in 800 signatures calling for the UN's attention to the political oppression in Belarus.

The petition letter requested the Belarusian government to release all protesters, withdraw prosecutions, and immediately run a fair presidential election. The petition also asked the EU and the UN to step up their intervention to ensure the re-election of the president.

Reverend Chan expressed grave dissatisfaction and regret that the UN refugee agency did not accept his petition letter. Chan pointed out that what is happening in Belarusian are not new to Hong Kong people. He called on the public to keep a close eye to the issue and to continue resisting against violence and oppression.

Hong Kong Use Chinese Test Kits which had High False-Positive Results in Sweden

The Hong Kong government will launch a universal testing programme on COVID-19 for no more than 2 weeks from September 1. However, BGI Genomics, one of the responsible agencies, was accused by the Swedish Public Health Agency that they received false-positive results on using BGI’s test kits. BGI Genomics stated that the test kits had undergone testing by authoritative organisations, and are one of the most sensitive reagents in the world, the sensitivity differs in countries.

The Swedish Public Health Agency had recorded 3,700 false-positive results from using BGI’s reagents and requested BGI Genomics to adjust the reagents to meet applicable standards. BGI Genomics responded, due to different sensitivity standards in different countries and regions, some asymptomatic carriers were determined as “healthy” in clinical manifestations. Therefore, high-sensitivity reagents would generate a positive test result, which would be regarded as “false positive”. BGI Genomics added that if the infected person participated in daily work or social activities as a “healthy” person, it would be harmful to the prevention and control of the epidemic.

U.S. Sanctions 24 Chinese Companies Involved in South China Sea Dispute

On August 26, 2020, the U.S. Government added 24 Chinese companies which help the Chinese military construct artificial islands in the South China Sea to an Entity List that bans them from purchasing American products, including 5 companies under Chinese Communication Construction Company in Hong Kong. The Chinese officials have not replied to the issue yet but the website under Global Times posted the news on WeChat, with a title "Sudden Disturbance".

The list includes Beijing Huanjia Telecommunication Co., Chongxin Bada Technology Development Co., Shanghai Cable Offshore Engineering Co., Tianjin Broadcasting Equipment Co., and the research institutes of the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation and China Shipbuilding Group.

Entity List also includes several divisions of China Communications Construction Company, which is in the Hong Kong stock exchange market (No. 1800). China Communications Construction Company is a contractor, handling many of the infrastructure projects for China's “Belt and Road” initiative around the world.

The U.S. State Department will impose visa restrictions on Chinese citizens who are “responsible for“, or “complicit in”, either the large-scale reclamation, construction, or militarization of disputed outposts in the South China Sea.” The family members of these sanctioned individuals may also face visa restrictions.

As the New York Times reports:

"The Chinese government has been rapidly building artificial islands in the disputed waters since 2013, dredging and constructing more than 3,000 acres of new land, including air defence and anti-ship missile features, the Commerce Department said in its announcement.

The island-building undermines the sovereignty of other countries in the region and comes despite the condemnation of the United States and other countries, according to the announcement."

China’s trade halt with Lithuania over Taiwan ties sends warning to Europe

China’s use of trade as a weapon in diplomatic disputes appears to be now targeted at Lithuania, home to fewer than 3 million people, after the Baltic nation agreed to exchange diplomatic offices with Taiwan.

But Beijing’s unofficial halt to its already limited trade with Lithuania is more about sending a warning to the rest of Europe, analysts have said.

Lithuania and Taiwan have agreed to establish mutual representative offices as a sign of deepening ties between the two governments. In response Beijing recalled its ambassador from Vilnius and expelled Lithuania’s from Beijing.

Spies for Hire: China’s New Breed of Hackers Blends Espionage and Entrepreneurship

China’s buzzy high-tech companies don’t usually recruit Cambodian speakers, so the job ads for three well-paid positions with those language skills stood out. The ad, seeking writers of research reports, was placed by an internet security start-up in China’s tropical island-province of Hainan.

That start-up was more than it seemed, according to American law enforcement. Hainan Xiandun Technology was part of a web of front companies controlled by China’s secretive state security ministry, according to a federal indictment from May. They hacked computers from the United States to Cambodia to Saudi Arabia, seeking sensitive government data as well as less-obvious spy stuff, like details of a New Jersey company’s fire-suppression system, according to prosecutors.

Provincial-Level Chinese Communist Members Among "Grassroots" Sector Candidates in Upcoming Hong Kong Election

Hong Kong is set to host an electoral committee election in September 2021, the first after China revamped the city's election rules earlier this year. A number of candidates, however, are current national committee members in mainland China.

Out of the 59 candidates of the "Grassroots Associations" sector, at least 10 are members of Provincial Political Consultative Conference, part of the Chinese Communist Party's "United Front" system. The memberships are spread across six Chinese provinces as well as two direct-administered municipalities.

Though the seats nominally represent "grassroots" people, public records show that many candidates are management-level officers in publicly-listed companies.

LegCo member Leung Che-cheung, who is also president of the pro-establishment New Territories Association of Societies, has this to say of the sector's candidates: "They represent the voice of the grassroots. They don't need to be a grassroots person themselves."

Hong Kong media credibility drops to new low, study finds

Public trust in the credibility of Hong Kong’s media has fallen to its lowest level in two decades, according to a survey by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK).

“That means people generally don’t trust the media enough. And the media may not be able to function properly trying to report on social issues, events and monitoring the situation for the citizens. So this is not good.”
