[Oct 12: Anti-Emergency Law March]

Voices of Hongkongers:
"If the law enforcers can wear masks, why can't we?"

Two women aged 81 and 70 joined the march hand in hand.

They said they have participated in every march including last week's in Kowloon. They said the government has betrayed justice, as the authorities only suppress citizens, but never reflect on why people are protesting. This is why the two oppose the anti-mask law, "If the law enforcers can wear masks, why can't we?"

They also hope that the young people can stay safe, as it saddens them to witness them being arrested.

'Protect the Children' Volunteers Formed Human Chain to Prevent Police From Making Arrest

When protesters marched on Nathan Road and passed by the Tsim Sha Tsui Police Station, police repeatedly demanded protesters to disperse.

Volunteers from the group 'Protect the Children' formed a human chain outside the police station to prevent the police from rushing out and arresting protesters.

Voices of Hongkongers: "Nobody can stay out of this, not even the children. We come out to fight for their future"

Ms. Lam brought her 3 year-old daughter to the Anti-Emergency Law march today (Oct 12). She said that she did not join the previous protests as the police refused to issue the 'Letter of No Objection'.

"They will never issue it [the letter of no objection] again; however, if we are deterred from protesting because of that, the crowd will dwindle from now on."

Ms Lam believed that as the police do not approve any protest anyway, it is better to come out rather than staying at home.

She said that over the past four months she “grew more angry and more heartbroken than ever.' She hoped the children would not forget the movement and always remember its cause.

What Lies Behind Carrie Lam's Emergency Powers from the Emergency Regulations Ordinance (ERO)?

Carrie Lam had invoked the Emergency Regulations Ordinance (ERO) on October 4 to forcefully implement the Anti-Mask Ban. Several pro-democracy legislators have suggested the following implications as a result:

1) The government can use ERO to lengthen the duration of detention from 48 hours to 96 hours, which was suggested by the Pro-Beijing party.

2) The exemption of anti-mask law is very sloppy as a law which does not clearly state the exemption for voluntary first aiders, social workers and journalists.

3) Anti-mask law does not cover the campus but the Education Bureau asked students not to wear mask both inside and outside campus and overpowered the schools to issue reply slip to parents on their behalf.

Therefore, the implementation of the anti-mask law by involving the Emergency Regulations Ordinance is just the start. In the long run, it is much more evil and closer to #Totalitarianism.

A heart-to-heart talk with a schoolteacher

3pm, October 4, the anti-mask law was enacted.

As if we were facing a formidable enemy, the last lesson was cancelled and all were summoned to school hall.

Earnestly and seriously, the principal groaned and said, “I hope to see everyone safe and sound next Tuesday”.

“Dismissed”.

The students left. There was a wave of sadness in the staff room. Many teachers cried, including myself. I walked to my class when I was crying, I wanted to meet my students and say a nice goodbye.
One of my closest students pulled me to a corner and asked: “What are we going to do with this?”

“About… What?” I asked.

“In any terms.” he replied.

I broke down again during our conversation, I couldn’t stop no matter how hard I tried. Many students came by to console me. What did I say and why did I cry?

Some of the students cried too. The more tears they shed, the more dangerous they are going to be. In fact, we all know that. It is a trap set by the government. In the coming three days, they would arrest, torture or even kill as many as they can. The government planned to create a big scene at this critical point of time by playing the “End Game”, to end YOUR GAME. The students were in this mood of “End Game” as well, but their end game is the End Game of “all-or-nothing” and this is exactly what the government wants.

Please stay calm.

It has already happened in the recent protests. Firing live rounds, torturing protesters in San Uk Ling Holding Centre, charging protesters with rioting, all these pointed out a simple fact: the lives of protesters were taken cheaply ever since a long time ago.

The anti-mask law makes no difference. It is just a tool to provoke.

The government came up with such a tactic just because they are now more ready than ever to hunt their prey, the protesters.

Edward Leung Tin-kei, an activist and a former spokesperson for the Hong Kong Indigenous stated:
In Ukraine, there was a revolution after the enactment of anti-mask law. If the same thing were to be done in Hong Kong, a revolution is inevitable as well. These words etched onto the protestors’ hearts. To them, enacting the law seems to a whistle blown to signify the start of a revolution. However, with a different culture, background and an essentially different demographic, it is not surely guaranteed that a revolution would begin in Hong Kong after the anti-mask law is enacted. What Edward truly meant in his words is that if such law is ever enacted, we should all prepare ourselves for a revolution to deal with the situation.

Facing the provocation from the government, the students yelled, “Liberate Hong Kong, the revolution of our times”. Their loud agitated screams is exactly what the government wants to hear; their swan-song.

What was the greatest mistake the revolutionaries in Les Miserables ever made?

Wrong decision due to wrong timing.

“Listen everybody!

General Lamarque is dead!

Lamarque! His death is the hour of fate.

The people's man.

His death is the sign we await!”

The misjudgment of timing was the fatal mistake that led them to die alone without any support or assistance. That was Les Miserables. Our Hong Kong, on the other hand, is not as miserable as that world yet. Although we are communist-phobic, the revolution has not yet arrived as lots of concerns remain.
Until now, there has not been any severe sabotage like large-scale arson. Should we willingly believe that there is going to be a revolution?

Whenever the youngsters yell “Liberate Hong Kong, the revolution of our times”, I get worried for the few staunch believers who may sacrifice themselves, unnecessarily. Their passion and devotion are praiseworthy and they should be protected, but the government is taking advantage of them to set a trap, a trap that is ultimately targeting the young ones. This is an extremely shameless tactic.

7 questions for the HKSAR Government - Chip Tsao

1. Why was the Wuhan passenger, who had fever and showed symptoms of sickness, still allowed to board the high-speed train in mainland?

2. Matthew Cheung Kin-Chung, the Chief Secretary for Administration, knew that the Wuhan pneumonia epidemic has already been spread to different Chinese cities and provinces, and even to Japan, Korea and the United States. Under the circumstances, why did he still think that it is not necessary for high-speed train passengers to fill in health declaration form?

3. The High Court has ruled that the “Anti-mask law” implemented under the “Emergency Regulations Ordinance” is unconstitutional. The Department of Justice has appealed to the Court of Appeal against the judgment. Now, will the government still persist for the appeal? Or will they give up?

4. Taiwan is not a member state of the World Health Organization (WHO). However, the relationship between Taiwan and Hong Kong is close. If the Taiwan government requests HK government to provide medical information of Wuhan pneumonia patient to protect the health of their citizens, will HK government provide these information?

5. 80 million masks were sold in Taobao within 2 days. Masks are for one-off use only. What measures will the HK government take to ensure the mask supply in HK for the coming 2 months if there is panic buying? Does HK have adequate supply of masks of satisfactory quality?

6. Since the international investment environment of Hong Kong has been downgraded again, will the HK government plan to reinforce the connection with the medical department of the US government, or even ask for help?*

7. If there is an influx of “Wuhan pneumonia refugees” who attempt to break into HK and seek medical treatment, what emergency measures will the HK government take?

*Editor’s note: the “medical department” reference was probably an oversight by the author and should be omitted

Coronavirus - Fung Hei-kin

(25 Jan) Chan Siu-chee, Secretary of the Food and Health Bureau, and some experts unanimously believe that “the monitoring and prevention measures implemented by the government are in the right direction.” At the end of the meeting minute, the government suggested five “health advices” to the citizens. The last one says, “if there are symptoms of respiratory system infections, one should wear a surgical mask, avoid going to school or to work, avoid going to crowded places, and should see a doctor as soon as possible.”

Yes, you are reading this correct. The government is telling you to wear mask only when all the symptoms occur. In other words, if you are not sick, the government does not recommend that you wear a mask, even just as a preventive measure. Do not forget, the government is now appealing the court’s ruling on the unconstitutionality of the Anti-mask law. Therefore, the government deliberately does not encourage citizens wearing masks. Indeed, a politically correct move.

There is a type of virus, namely king-mentality virus(官狀病毒)*. The patients look like government officers, who enjoy high salaries; yet they are jeopardising the lives of their people. Wuhan’s Coronavirus(冠狀病毒) is scary; Hong Kong’s king-mentality virus is detestable.

*The Chinese character 官 means government officers, the pronunciation of 冠 and 官 is very alike in Cantonese.

[Logical Question of International Relations] Eight Conspiracies at Carrie Lam’s Epidemic PressCon 3/3

7. She emphasised that the lack of recommendation of wearing mask has nothing to do with the Anti-Mask Law. But this can’t explain why Hong Kong has already attained the so-called highest level of alert and, yet, the government has not clearly educated citizens on the basic knowledge of wearing masks and their different types. This is contrary to what other cities in China are doing, and is also a sharp contrast with how the Chief Executive of Macao is wearing N95. When an “emergency” crisis looms in Hong Kong, the nature of mask wearing is already in complete contradiction with the Anti-Mask Law. Even if the crisis is passed, citizens will be able to, for quite some time, cite hygiene as reasons to wear masks. Even if the government insists to appeal, it will be all for naught, and is just denial on the part of Carrie Lam.

8. The government appointed Professor Gabriel Matthew Leung and other experts as consultants. This is obviously intended to use their professional authority to share risks with the government. Earlier the government had a hard time finding people to join the Independent Review Commission. They need this even more to show that they are still trusted by the experts. However, the real logic is that experts need to provide professional opinions only and don’t need to care about politics. But the Chief Executive must care about politics, for otherwise why don’t the experts make the calls themselves? In dealing with Wuhan pneumonia, the hardest part was that, for the entire December before Xi Jinping gave the order, Wuhan and the whole country intentionally hid the truth about the epidemic, causing no one to know the truth. Thus, it must include a political assessment to see how far to fight the epidemic. But now Carrie Lam just pushes everything to the experts. If the #epidemic really breaks out, even though it is her political responsibility, she can still dispose of the experts.

HK Court Sentences Pro-democracy Activists
#JoshuaWong and KooSzeYiu to Longer Jail Time for Protesting Against #AntiMaskLaw

On April 13, 2021, the Eastern Court in Hong Kong gave longer jail terms to pro-democracy activists Joshua Wong and Koo Sze-yiu, for violating the anti-mask law and joining unauthorised assembly on October 5, 2019, the day when the anti-mask law was enacted after bypassing the city's legislature.

24-year-old Wong, who is now in jail for his involvement in the 2019 anti-ELAB movement, is given another four months in prison. The magistrate Daniel Tang insisted that Wong has to serve the four-month prison sentence separately, in addition to his current 13.5 month term.

Wong is also one of the 47 pro-democracy figures charged with #NationalSecurityLaw violations for joining the primary election of the pro-democracy camp in 2020.

75-year-old veteran activist Koo Sze-yiu, who is diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, is sentenced to another five months in jail. He only left the prison last week for desecrating the Chinese emblem during a protest in July 2020.

After their sentences were announced, Koo said to the magistrate, "Being jailed has become part of my life. I won't give up and I will keep fighting." He also shout, "All hail democracy! All hail human rights!". Koo thanked fellow Hongkongers for their support.

When Wong was escorted away, he made a heart shape with his fingers and expressed his appreciation to the supporting public.
