U.S. Secretary of Health Arrives in Taiwan on Air Force Two,
BBC: US-Taiwan Relations Reach a 41-year high

While China-US relations are deteriorating and have sanctioned each other, US-Taiwan relations become closer. The United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar, led a visiting delegation to Taiwan and arrived at Taipei Songshan Airport on Aug 9. He is the first United States cabinet-level official to visit Taiwan in six years. He is also the highest-ranking official visiting Taiwan since the cessation of diplomatic relations between the US and Taiwan in 1979.

The Boeing C-40B executive plane that arrived in Taiwan was Air Force Two with the American flag painted on the aircraft. Central News Agency (#CNA) of Taiwan pointed out that the United States attached great importance to Taiwan with a high-level attitude.

The high standards visit from the United States to Taiwan this time indicate that U.S.-Taiwan relations have escalated to a new high after the cessation of diplomatic relations in 1979.

Since Donald Trump has been the president of the United States, he directly telephoned Tsai Ing-wen and publicly called her the "President of Taiwan" on Twitter. In 2018, the two houses of Congress passed the Taiwan Travel Act. United States officials can visit Taiwan and meet with Taiwanese officials, and vice versa. Alex Azar was the first official to visit Taiwan under the act. In 2019, Taiwan officially changed the name of the Coordination Council for North American Affairs (#CCNAA) to the Taiwan Council for U.S. Affairs, which is equivalent to the United States Embassy in Taiwan.

According to the report from “Liberty Times”, Taiwan Air Force fighter planes also took off to monitor the situation.

Less than a week after US President Biden took office, China has dispatched 28 military aircraft to interfere with Taiwan’s southwest airspace on the 23rd and 24th for two consecutive days. The aircraft types are mainly fighters, bombers, and other combat aircraft. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence dispatched air patrol troops to respond, broadcast the drive away, and used air defence missiles to track and monitor.
