Question Over Police Treatment of Police Dog

As police fired non stop rounds of tear gas in Yuen Long on October, the fully geared police officers contrast the unprotected police dogs at the scene.

Whereas riot police were massively deployed in Yuen Long on October 21 in response to sit-in organized by citizens; police turned a blind eye the Triad attacks on pedestrians and passersby on July 21.

One Year On: Pro-democracy Protests Connect Hongkongers of Different Ethnicities

Jeffrey Andrews, a social worker in Hong Kong, wrote on his Facebook on Oct 21, 2020:

"Last year [Oct 20, 2019], the Kowloon Mosque, the Chungking Mansions and the minority community faced frustration. We distributed water outside the Chungking Mansions, in a hope to resolve the tension.Who could imagine that this help us achieve the effect of "we connect"?

We are thankful that many Hongkongers reached out and built bridge with us.

This is our Hong Kong."

[Editor's note: During the Kowloon March on October 20, 2019, the Hong Kong police fired blue-colored water cannon at the Kowloon Mosque, infuriatiating the religious community in Hong Kong.

A disparaging remark, directing at former magistrate Stanley Ho Chun-yiu, was sighted on the walls of two property buildings on Broadcast Drive in Hong Kong that read, “Police arrests, Magistrate releases”.

Magistrate Ho has been a target of CCP loyalists after he acquitted some pro-democracy protesters and scorned evidence given by some police officers.

The Police Public Relations Bureau confirmed that a report was received at late evening of October 20, informing the police that 4 men riding on a white private car were seen scratching the remark on the wall. The case is tentatively listed as criminal damage with no arrests made.

Reports allege Chinese express companies has banned the import of BTS products. Korea JTBC reportly contacted the Chinese department to confirm the allegations.

Disputes between BTS and Chinese netizens last week, which aroused from Korean War remarks, was not settled by the clarification of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

There have been recent reports on Chinese social media platform, Weibo, that Chinese express companies have refused to transport BTS products to China. As statements emerged from the Weibo account of Chinese Yunda Express Company. On Monday afternoon the company posted that “packages related to BTS will not be mailed temporarily”, and the reason for the refusal was that “it is something everyone understands”.

Later, there were rumours on the internet that two other Chinese express companies, YTO and Zhongtong, also imposed similar new regulations to not ship BTS products to China. However, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency yesterday, the relevant news was untrue.

But on the same day, later in a JTBC evening news broadcast, a report suggested that reporters from the press department were talking directly with personnel from relevant departments of China Communications Corporation. It was confirmed that the company was not shipping BTS products to China.

Top US universities massively under-report funding from China and Russia

A recent report from the United States Department of Education (USDE) have brought to light top US universities that have massively under-reported funding they have received from China, Russia and other nations described as “foreign adversaries”. Out of the 12 universities under the investigations, Harvard, Yale, Stanford and Georgetown: all had financial dealings with Huawei, the Chinese tech giant that many US officials believe is a national security threat.

It is a legal requirement within the United States, that universities must disclose gifts or contracts from foreign sources that are US$250,000 (about HK$1.95 million) or above. However, this legislation, which was was established in 1986, has come under little federal oversight over decades. The USDE began investigating the universities, amid suspicion that they had failed to report millions of dollars from foreign sources such as China, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. A scathing report was released on Tuesday, which further provided relevant information on issue.

The content of the report revealed that most of the universities that were investigated had financial dealings with Huawei, with at least one of them having ties directly linked to the Chinese Community Party. Others had deals with the Russian government and institutions in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The report did not identify which universities were connected to those entities. Since coming under federal scrutiny, the 12 universities disclosed a combined US$6.5 billion (about HK$50.7 billion) in unreported foreign funding.

China’s treatment of Uighurs amounts to “genocide,” parliamentary subcommittee concludes

The House of Commons subcommittee on international human rights had its conclusion after hearing two days of testimony from witness that include “survivors of the government of China’s atrocities” in the region.

The subcommittee said that nearly two millions Uighurs and other Turkic Muslims were being detained and witnesses noted that this was the largest mass detention of a minority community since the Holocaust.

They also called on the federal government to recognize China’s actions in the region as genocide and to implement so-called Magnitsky legislation against officials responsible.

A CUHK student fled to Germany has a message to protesters, “Take care of yourselves, fight in your own way.”

A 22-year-old female CUHK student shared her exile experiences in Germany and her tough time, staying away from family and suffering from the sexual assault in refugee camp. Although she is eligible for a three-year residency permit in Germany, she feels conflicted while thinking of other protestors still in Hong Kong.

She hopes the German government can simplify the procedures of applying asylum for Hongkongers in the future and emulate the other counties in launching “lifeboat schemes”.

“Prepare for the worst, hope for the best,” she tells other protestors.
