Cathay Pacific has revised its Code of Conduct for employees to discourage staff from participating in protests and using company's resources to express political views.
Cathay Pacific claimed that there were numerous false accusations and misleading information about recent layoff decisions, and they noticed the anxiety aroused by the incidents. Cathay will not further comment on those cases, but it ensures the dismissals were made under formal and careful examination.
According to the notice, Cathay states that it needs to build a compliant culture, which has ā€œzero tolerance towards illegal activitiesā€ and encourages staff to report on violation.
The company will investigate on the reported violations and protect the informant.

Former Cathay Pacific staff who said they were fired for supporting Hong Kongā€™s pro-democracy protesters accused bosses on Monday of carrying out a ā€œCultural revolutionā€ style political purge.

The Hong Kong-based airline has had a torrid few weeks after Chinese state media and authorities blasted the company because some of its 27,000 employees had taken part in ā€” or were sympathetic to ā€” anti-government protesters.

Hong Kong Flagship Airline Under Fire for Alleged Witch Hunt

Cathay Pacific was under fire for accusations of free speech violations. Former Cathay Dragon union leader Rebecca Sy On-na filed a claim to the Labour Tribunal for unreasonable and unlawful dismissal and discrimination against the union. Among all Cathay Pacific workers sacked during the six-month movement, this is the first Cathay Pacific former-worker has taken the matter to court.

The then-chairwoman of the 2000-strong Hong Kong Dragon Airlines Flight Attendantsā€™ Associations had been a flight attendant for 18 years until she was shown and asked about her Facebook posts by the management of Cathay Pacific. Her meeting came after Beijingā€™s efforts to step up pressure on companies to take a stand against the movement. The posts include one in which she expressed her anger over the shocking resignations of Cathay Pacificā€™s CEO and chief customer and commercial officers.

Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon frontline employees demand cessation of all flights to China and sufficient protective equipment

Watch video: https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/17061

During a rally organized by Cathay Dragon cabin crew members on February 8 2020, the following statement was announced, following the union's green light to strike action after voting:

"We would like to urge Cathay Pacific once again to ensure a safe working environment for frontline employees. It is incumbent upon the employer to provide the appropriate protective equipment for frontline employees, so that their health and safety can be assured as much as possible.

We request Cathay Pacific to immediately cease all flights to China. This should be done immediately instead of a gradual reduction of flights over a two-month period, and with 10% of flights to China still in service at the end.

Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon must also provide employees with a sufficient protective equipment such masks, gloves and hand sanitizer. Only this way can our colleaguesā€™ health and safety be assured no matter where we fly."

#CathayPacific Staff Rally Against Sacking and Unfair Treatment Objected by Hong Kong Police

After sacking 5,300 Hong Kong-based staff members, Cathay Pacific demands its remaining employees to change to a new contract or face sacking.

Earlier, Cathay Pacific flight attendants' union has informed the police and applied for a rally permission at Cathay City on November 4. Two days before the rally, the police rejected the request.

The union criticized Cathay Pacific for mistreating their staff by firing them and cutting their salary. Communication with the management has been problematic and there are a lot of unsolved issues with the new contract. Many employees regretted signing it.

Although the rally has been rejected by the police, the union will find alternative ways to voice their opinion.

Since several pro-democracy rallies took place at the airport in August and September 2019, the Hong Kong Airport Authority has obtained an injunction order from the court, barring anyone who are not staff, nor passengers with a boarding pass from entering the Hong Kong airport.

U.S. agency criticizes Hong Kong air carrier quarantine rules

The U.S. government warned it could limit flights by Hong Kong-based carriers.

The U.S. Transportation Department (USDOT) issued an order on Mar 17 requiring Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific to file flight schedules for all U.S. flights within seven days to determine if any are ā€œcontrary to applicable law or adversely affect the public interestā€.

It was to react to rules issued by Hong Kong in January requiring locally based air crews to quarantine when returning there from international locations, but exempted flights between Hong Kong and Anchorage, Alaskaā€™s biggest city. USDOT said Hong Kongā€™s restrictions exclusively benefited Hong Kong carriers and ā€œimpaired the operating rights of U.S. carriersā€.

Hong Kong quarantine pushes Cathay pilots to 'breaking point'

//#CathayPacific has been hit by a wave of pilot resignations in recent weeks as resentment over Hong Kong's strict quarantine regime boils over and crew scramble for emerging opportunities overseas.

The departures come as Hong Kong ties itself to Beijing's closed-border zero-Covid strategy - a move that has kept the city coronavirus-free but internationally isolated.

Hong Kong's leaders say normalising travel with China must come before the rest of the world, a strategy that has caused growing alarm within multinationals in a finance hub that dubs itself "Asia's World City".

AFP interviewed four Cathay pilots who requested anonymity. Each said they knew more than a dozen colleagues who had resigned in the last few weeks.

Pilots fear Hong Kong's future as one of Asia's busiest transport hubs is now at risk.

"Once airlines move infrastructure like technicians, ground crew and pilots out of Hong Kong to places like Seoul and Bangkok, trust me, they're not coming back," one pilot said.

One pilot who flies commercial said he had been unable to see his family overseas for more than 20 months because of the quarantine restrictions and his need to stay flying to top up his depleted salary.

He said he felt Hong Kong's leaders have abandoned the idea of the city being an international hub at the request of "our overlords to the north" - a reference to Beijing.

"I love Hong Kong but if we're not going to plan our way out of this with a roadmap the question becomes what am I doing here?" he said.

"I can't take another year of this."//

Hong Kong Government Officials and Politicians Reportedly Breach Gathering Ban, Carrie Lam dodges responsibility

#CasparTsui, the Hong Kong SAR Government's Secretary for Home Affairs, was found attending a birthday party with over 100 guests organized by a Hong Kong delegate to PRCā€™s top legislature. Photos were leaked out showing the attendees without wearing any mask and violating the gathering ban. It was reported that Tsui did not record his whereabouts in the compulsory government-made #LeaveHomeSafe App.

Less than a week ago, following reports of a #CathayPacific aircrew staffer violating quarantine restrictions and prompting a cluster outbreak in the city, Hong Kong's Chief Executive #CarrieLam summoned the chairman and the CEO of the airline to ā€œexpress strong discontent.ā€

On January 4, 2022, Lam was recorded saying saying that although senior management may not be aware of their staff memberā€™s actions, it should not be exploited as a ā€œdisclaimerā€ to shirk responsibility.

Sternly Lam told Cathay Pacific,
"you, being the head of an organization, are in similar capacity as me, being the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. I am accountable for every happenings in the city.ā€

However, Lam changed the saying after the scandal of the government officials broke out on January 2, 2022 Since a guest had contracted COVID, Caspar Tsui and other guests were sent to compulsory Covid-19 quarantine at Pennyā€™s Bay.

This time. when asked if the Chief Executive should take similar responsibility over the case involving the banquet, Carrie Lam apparently bent "accountability" to her own interests, saying that being accountable was not equal to ā€œtaking personal responsibility for the personal decision and actions of every colleague.ā€
