[15:00 Lam Tin Instant] Chaotic District Council election vote counting at Lam Tin’s J19 Constituency

(25 Nov) Pro-democracy candidate Desmond Fung Tak-sum (No. 2) had originally defeated Kan Ming-tung of the pro-Beijing Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions (No. 1) with a small number of votes. However, the Electoral Officer later declared some problematic ballot papers valid, including one with three stamps and another one with a stamp on the profile of the candidate. After including these ballots, candidate No. 1 won with 4,080 votes.

This caused an uproar among residents at the scene as they believed the Electoral Officer had no objective standard in defining between valid and invalid ballots. Riot police later entered the polling station to escort the transport of the ballot boxes to the Registration and Electoral Office. Fung was extremely dissatisfied over the vote-counting procedure and the improper handling by the election officer, which led to a chaotic counting process.

Vote Counting Controversies

(25 Nov)Desmond Fung who is the pro-democracy candidate of the Lam Tin constituency lost the election by 50 votes. “I’m sorry to all of you.” Fung apologized to the voters at the Lam Tin polling station, adding that his win or loss was not important. “The win of Hong Kong is the most important.” He called on everyone to continue the fight through different means, tearing up as he spoke.

Vote counting at the Lam Tin constituency has been controversial as two rounds of ballot counting still offered up no results. Residents at the polling station asked for another count, but the electoral officer refused and called the police. A large number of riot police arrived to block off the polling station entrance. The electoral officer later said residents could file complaints with the Election Committee if they were still dissatisfied. There were about 100 problematic ballots at the two Lam Tin constituency polling stations, and the number was more than the number of valid votes of the opponent, which was 50. The problematic ballots had multiple stamps and stamping outside of the circles.

Daughter and mother in Lam Tin suspected to be infected by father; Facebook posts of the daughter of the 17th Wuhan pneumonia patient criticized HK govt not closing border resulting in outbreak in communities

(05 Feb) The 17th patient confirmed with Wuhan pneumonia is a 60-year old male retiree. He lives in Yue Hong House (Block A) Hong Tin Court in Lam Tin and has not traveled recently. On Jan 22, he started feeling unwell. He visited four different private doctors on Jan 23, 25 and 28. Among them, one worked for Quality HealthCare Medical Services at Telford Gardens.

His daughter and mother are currently staying in isolated wards at the United Christian Hospital while they wait for test results. His daughter posted on Facebook that she did not blame medical personnel for participating in the strike. Rather, she criticized the Hong Kong government for refusing to completely close the border, allowing the outbreak to spread into the community.

She also told a reporter, "Should I not speak now instead of waiting for the government to speak on my behalf?" She refused the reporter's request for a phone interview but will consider it if her father's condition stabilizes.

Facebook post from the 17th patient's daughter (Part 1):

(04 Feb) It is confirmed that my father has #WuhanPneumonia. Our entire family has not been to Mainland China for at least half a year. It was a case of human-to-human transmission. We are unsure if the infection came from the community or from people we came across over the past three days at the hospital. Does it help now for the government to be buried alongside us?

Department of Health may have failed to warn Telford to disinfect

Summary: Once again, the Department of Health may have failed Hongkongers by neglecting to alert the local community of the confirmed case of Wuhan coronavirus infection. As a result, no extra sanitation measures were taken until after the news broke. At Quality Healthcare at Telford Gardens, where the virus carrier had previously visited, patients needed to cancel their appointments on short notice. The virus may have already spread in his residential area at Hong Ting Court, Lam Tin.
