Memorial held in Tseung Kwan O for suspected victims of police brutality

On the night of the half-year anniversary of the 831 incident (Prince Edward) on Saturday (February 29), hundreds of black-clad protesters took to streets, reminding us of the sea of people who stood in defiance at the many pro-democracy rallies last year, and showing that HongKongers have not forgotten about their fight for justice.

On the same day in Tseung Kwan O, civilians rebuilt the altar which was destroyed by the police earlier, hoping that the two alleged victims of police brutality, Chow Tsz-lok and Chan Yin-lam, will be dearly remembered. No matter how heavy the sorrow is in our hearts, it won’t change our determination to fight on together for those who sacrificed.

Rest in peace.

May god bless all those struggling to survive.

Reporters Wearing Press Cards Demanded For a Stop And Search

Today marks the 6th mensiversary of the Prince Edward Station Attack on August 31st, 2019. Many Hong Kong citizens responded with flower offerings outside the MTR station. Two reporters from Stand News and a reporter who was broadcasting live was stopped and searched by the police. They were demanded to provide their Hong Kong ID cards even though they were wearing their press cards and were holding professional cameras.

According to the HKPF Website regarding valid reasons to stop and search civilians, officers “have the power to question any person about a crime or offence” and “may demand proof of identity, conduct computerized enquiries and search for weapons or drugs.”

However, the condition for searching is that “If a police officer finds any person whom he reasonably suspects of having committed or of being about to commit or of intending to commit any offence, he can search him/her for anything that is likely to be of value to the investigation of any offence that the person has committed, or is reasonably suspected of having committed or of being about to commit or of intending to commit.”

Yet the reporters who were stopped and search were already wearing press cards with their names and photos printed on, while carrying professional equipment for live broadcast and photography.

Pepper Spray at Close-Range; Riot Police Ignores Fallen Woman

Feb 29 marks the sixth month after the 831 Attack. Citizens gathered in Mongkok to pay tribute to the casualties, and protest against police brutality. However, police's violence escalated into indiscriminate use of weapons towards citizens.

At around 2315, one mid-age woman, apparently a passer-by, was pepper-sprayed in close range. She fell down, but riot police ran by ignoring her.

Reporters were pepper-sprayed as well- just as police's usual "friendly" behavior towards the press. From the photo above, it is clearly seen that they were sprayed deliberately, even their cameras could not escape from that.

Arbitrary Arrests and Excessive Use of Weapons at Late Night

During the clash on 29 Feb in Mongkok, at about 12am, police had arrested about 30-40 citizens, including those who were wearing reflective vests and volunteer first-aiders who had the word "First Aid" tagged on their helmets. Some arrestees had their hands tied with cable ties. Police vehicles were also deployed to prevent reporters from shooting videos from the other side of the road.

At about 1.15 am, the police fired pepper balls towards reporters. Some of the shots hit the stores close by, and the irritating contents inside the bullets were projected onto the doors.

Riot police shoot pepper balls to disperse protesting crowd, civilians opened umbrellas as protection

Protestors were out on the Saturday night (29Feb)to commemorate 6 months since the 831 incident. Clashes broke out as riot police started to disperse protesters, incessantly shooting rounds of pepper balls in the downtown area in Mong Kok, causing disturbances to neighbourhood eateries and retail stores.

As a retaliation, 3 protestors shone flashlights at riot police from across the road while some others opened umbrellas to protect themselves against pepper balls that could have hit at them any minute.

Keep the Fire Burning🔥🔥🔥
請保持內心的憤怒🔥🔥🔥

Despite ruthless police arrests, hundreds of protesters took to the streets in remembrance of the 6th month since the 831 incident when riot police stormed into Prince Edward Station and attacked citizens indiscriminately last year, showing that Hongkongers have not forgotten their pursuit of justice.

Our compatriots, we understand that Hong Kong people need the time right now to tackle this coronavirus epidemic. During this time, let us try a peaceful approach to continue our quest for democracy, to keep our memories of those dreadful happenings in past 8 months fresh in our minds. We should, nonetheless, make use of this time to train and fortify ourselves for future fights.

“Hold on to your rage,
tend to your inner fire.
The battle is not yet won,
this war shall go on
unto world's end!"

See you under "the pot" (LegCo Building).

In the 8.31 incident, police were seen violently assaulting passengers on the platform and inside train cabins at the Prince Edward Station. The same train then carried casualties to Yau Ma Tei Station, where it was being locked down by the police stopped by the police. With the number of casualties unknown, civilians on ground were anxious and worried, as they did not know what the police were doing in secret.

Bewater HK filmed a first-aider begging the police to allow him access into Yau Ma Tei Station.

“I’ll give you all my gears, Sir! Please just let me come in and save them! You can hit me, even arrest me afterwards! Please let me go save them!” he begged and yelled, in vain.

Even in the war zone, medics are protected and treated with skme respect. How arrogant and cold-blooded the police are, to go to the extent of not just beating the innocent up, but denying them proper medical attention thereafter.

With the truth being covered, we will fight until justice is served.

Lester Shum: A possible black hole for live streaming and documenting in Mong Kok – a repeat of 831.

(10 May) The Hong Kong police were already very familiar with Mong Kok’s ‘sachet bag strategy’(a strategy which allows them to make mass arrests), and it seemed like they stepped up their game tonight.
It seems that the police are targeting journalists more strategically so no one would be able to film what happened.

Within 10 - 15 minutes, the area around Sai Yeung Choi Street South, Shan Tung Street, Tung Choi Street and Fa Yuen Street were completely cordoned off by police and all those present were arrested, while a large number of journalists were stopped and "targeted".
After the police started their operation, apart from those who targeted citizens, it seems like there was also a group of police who purposefully “subdued” and “dispersed” the journalists: those who could be kicked away, pushed away and sprayed away were dispersed, and those who couldn’t be dispersed due to the large number of journalists were demanded to sit down and turn their live streaming off.
After being surrounded by the police, a number of journalists were demanded to retreat so far back that they couldn’t film the police’s actions at all.
Given the large number of police on the scene and the strategic targeting of journalists, there was a part of Mong Kok where no one knew what happened, and how arrestees were treated.

The reason why the 831 Prince Edward Station incident happened is because the the police kicked all journalists off the platform, which is not a difficult thing to do with their resources if they have the intention to do it. But like tonight, clearing out hundreds of journalists in several streets, I don’t believe that there was no premeditation or deployment.

Journalists being targeted and brutalised by police is nothing new. But what happened tonight appears to be a premeditated and deployed effort by the police to create a black hole for reporting and documenting, like in the 831 incident.

China's newspaper People’s Daily sings praises for IPCC report, saying it removes all injustice against Hong Kong police

(16 May) After 10 months of “investigation”, the Hong Kong Independent Police Complains Council (IPCC) released the overview for the anti-extradition law amendment bill (ELAB) protests yesterday (May 16th, 2020). People’s Daily, China’s official press, stated that the report “addressed every possible problem with equal importance”; “through strict scientific investigations, all possible suspicions of the police force are raised”. The article, which was accompanied by a picture with two police officers with the captions “PROTECTOR” and “30,000 FOR 7 MILLION” on it, also stated that the IPCC report “used plenty of evidence to show that police are the true guardians of Hong Kong since the start of the anti-ELAB incidents”.

However, what IPCC announced yesterday was a “thematic study report” instead of an “investigation report”. Anthony Neoh, chairman of the IPCC, highlighted that the IPCC does not have powers for investigation, and the report was based on what the police force claimed. Meanwhile, Carrie Lam, Hong Kong chief executive, strongly rejected establishing an independent investigation council again yesterday.

People’s Daily’s article, “Who are the true guardians of Hong Kong?”, says that the IPCC “investigation report”, using many facts and statistics, recovered the “6 major truths” of the anti-ELAB crisis, including the “police-triad collusion” on 21 July, 2019 and “police murdering innocents in Prince Edward station” on 31 August, 2019 and proved that these “incidents” were all rumors. “Such ‘investigation’ cleansed all doubts and injustice against the Hong Kong police and showed that the police force are the true guardians of Hong Kong with plenty of evidence”, the article says.
The article suggested that aggressive Hong Kong protesters “has threatened the government with violence by vandalizing infrastructures, paralyzing public order and discretely injuring individuals”; such actions “have turned Hong Kong into a city of darkness and fear, which could be compared to the damage of World War II”. “If the police force did not intervene (with their actions), it would be impossible to think how much damage these rioters would cause to ‘the Pearl of the East’”. “In the course of the police force restoring justice, ‘rioting forces’ have tried to tarnish the police reputation to make way for their violent behaviors by manipulating public opinions”.

The report also sings praises for the IPCC report, saying that the report “does not attempt to dodge or undermine the importance of every problem; through strict scientific investigations, it justified the legality and validity of the police force”. “Although there are some flaws in the police forces’ actions”, the report says, “the police force does adhere to regulations in their actions; such minor problems should not be exaggerated by the opposition to harm the police force’s image”.

The bell tolls for us

(23 Jun) Many of those apprehended on 831 received appointments of arrest today
around 5 or 6 am, our fellows were taken from their homes.

Many fellows were trying to lay low,
no spotlights upon them,
no wealth, no influence, no political power, no close ties with others.
Some politicians even declare that they are fine.

Today's mass arrest marks the beginning of political vengeance,
many well-prepared accusations, pulled from thin air,
all these charges, just to prove no one died on 831.

"If I'm jailed, how is my girlfriend going to pay the rent on her own?"
"Can I leave my motorbike with you? Save it for my younger brother when he gets his licence."
Hearing their words before they go,
an unbearable sense of futility weighs down on me.

Our true fellows do not cause a ruckus.
The only thing I can do
is let people know that our 831 fellows need public attention.

Ask not for whom the bell tolls;
The bell tolls for us.

PRC Official Zhang Xiaoming: Chanting about 831 Incident Violates National Security Law

According to the Hong Kong National Security Act, inciting subversion of state power counts as obstructing the government from performing their duties, and such actions are against the law.

Zhang Xiaoming, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong And Macau Affairs Office Of The State Council, claimed that spreading rumours about protestors being beaten to death on August 31st at Prince Edward Station might be in itself a violation of the National Security Act.

However, he did not explain whether talking about police brutality is prohibited, as the act did not explicitely define what actions are considered to incite hatred.

Hongkonger Parodizes Police Commissioner on Halloween

On Halloween, a Hong Kong citizen dressed up as the city's police commissioner Chris Tang and appeared at Prince Edward. Reporters hoped to conduct an interview, while the person jokingly asked the reporters to talk to the "PPRB", the public relation branch of the police. "#ChrisTang" also made fun of a pro-police actor who is recently charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Today is the second anniversary of Prince Edward 831 attack, when civilians were brutally hit by Hong Kong Police at Prince Edward MTR station. Heavy presence of police was seen at the MTR station.

At around 10pm, police officers stationed at the scene began to intercept and search civilians near a local restaurant.

Moments later, they suddenly charged forward toward Mong Kok for no apparent reason. Soon after they forced reporters along the way to the Allied Plaza, police officers pulled back again, leaving reporters amidst busy traffic.

Definant Hongkongers refuse to forget police brutality in pro-democracy movement

2200 | Prince Edward, Hong Kong

Since China's imposition of National Security Law in Hong Kong in June 2020, the authorities have been cracking down opposing voices in the city and any efforts made for freedom and democracy.

Putting their freedom on the line, some Hongkongers continued to find subtle ways to defend their rights to express themselves in a bid for democracy.

On the day where Hongkongers usually gather to pay tribute to citizens and pro-democracy advocates who suffered police brutality on August 31, 2019, some hid white flowers in their bags, some laid brocade at the subway station, while another man was sighted carrying a handbill that read, "it is sad today, but I will carry on the fight."
