Opinion Poll: Former PRC Premier Zhu Rongji and Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen Are The Most Popular Among Hongkongers
On 4 August, the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (HKPORI) published the popularity ranking of political leaders across the Straits.
Former premier of the People's Republic of China, Zhu Rongji was the top-ranked with a score of 61.6. Zhu was most remembered for saying that the Central government would be blamed forever if it ever destroyed Hong Kong.
Taiwan's president Tsai Ing-wen is the second most popular among Hongkongers, and her score was 57.6. Secretary-general of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jin-ping was ranked last in this study, with a score of 40.7.
Deputy CEO of HKPORI, Dr. Chung Kim-wah believes that the results reflect Hongkongers’ stance on the different political systems.
Chung was asked if he was worried about violating the National Security Law by conducting this survey. He replied that he will continue surveying the masses on relevant topics, just like how he has been doing it since 1997, until the day he gets accused.
“Give me a reason for stopping what I have always been doing."
He stated that carrying out studies about the opinion on Hong Kong or Taiwan independence is not action to advocate these approaches. Rather, the results were just a reflection of the views of the citizens on the situation, and for the country's leaders as reference.

#CUHK School of Medicine: 20% of COVID-19 patients have liver damage, and the risk of deterioration and death is 8 times more
The study was conducted by the School of Medicine of the Hong Kong Chinese University (CUHK).The sameple covered 1,040 COVID19 patients in Honv Kong diagnosed from January 23 to May 1 this year, with a median age of 35 years.
The research team collected liver function indexes from these patients during their hospitalization and found that 22.5% (234 people) had liver damage. In the sample, 5.1% (53 people) had been in the intensive care unit, and 2.1% (22 people) had needed equipment to assist breathing. Another 0.4% (4 people) died, of which 71% were patients with liver damage.
Professor Wong Lai-hung, specializing in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Department of Internal Medicine and Drug Therapy of CUHK, said that the patient’s liver function is impaired, which may be caused by the inflammation caused by COVID-19, excessive blood pressure and oxygen content, or the effect of drugs used in treatment, as patients treated with more types of drugs are 90% more likely to have liver function problems than other patients.This means that patients who have to take multiple drugs due to a more severe pneumonia are at higher risk.
Prof. Wong suggested that the liver function of patients should be monitored so that any illness can be detected at an early stage.

District Councilors Protest Against Government's Reliance on China Despite Doubts on Quality and Worry over Mass Surveilance
On August 5, a number of pro-democracy district councillors protested at the Metropark Hotel in Kowloon, condemning the authorities for over-relying on China and diminishing the local medical sector. The hotel is where where the seven personnel from China said to assist Hong Kong in Nucleic Acid Testing were staying.
Tsuen Wan District Councillor Roy Tam pointed out that the government purchased nucleic acid testing services from the China companies Huasheng Diagnostic Center and China National Inspection Co., Ltd. in the middle of last month. However, the two companies have many issues and the public is also worried that DNA data will be collected by China for mass surveillance.

Tam further pointed out that Hua Shouen, director of the Huasheng Diagnostic Center, was testified in the DR laboratory poison injection case, and the mother company, BGI (Beijing Genomics Institute) has been blacklisted by the United States for its DNA collection in Xinjiang. It is suspected that the comprehensive COVID-19 test on the Hong Kong population is actually a covet collection of Hongpongers’ DNA.
Tam criticized the government’s failure to locate contractors through public bidding. He also pointed out that another company Zhonglong Inspection and any China-based 'certification' has no relevant medical laboratory licenses. Tam believes that "the government knew it way early," so that after the appointment, China Inspections established the China Inspection Medical Inspection Co., Ltd. on July 23 and added medical laboratory technologists as directors to comply with legal requirements.
Tai Po District Councillor Tam Yee-pui believes that Hong Kong has sufficient manpower and resources in the medical sector and there is no need to seek help from China. He also pointed out that Hong Kong's medical standards are higher than China's and the government has been dwarfing Hong Kong's medical system. After all, "Hongkongers can handle all thesd by themselves."
Sai Kung District Councillor Gary Fan criticized that the government used politics to override the lives of Hongkongers, and that the open borders and the exemption from quarantine continued to increase the burden on Hong Kong medical staff. As the government has introduced Chinese companies to Hong Kong "their quality is doubted by everyone."

Magistrate Attempt to Fine More than Maximum Penalty
The "Lennon Walls" have been a place to stick posters in different districts and for citizens to express their dissatisfaction with the government and condemn police violence.
Two young people posted 22 posters near Fanling MTR station in March, 2020. They were charged afterwards. The two pleaded guilty in court.
After learning that the maximum fine for a summon charge was 10,000 HKD, Magistrate Wu Chung-yi said: "If I fine $1,500 for each poster and you two will pay 50% each, it should add up to $16,500." She repeatedly emphasized that "the maximum fine is 10,000, but then how do one make the count?”
Finally, the maximum fine was imposed, which was 10,000HKD per person. The magistrate asked: "What did the 22 posters say?" The prosecution then read out in court: "Police Disppear on 7.21, Murder on 8.31, and Shot Civilians on 10.1, Police are collaborators, Blue ribboners don't know shame."

The American Institute in Taiwan (#AIT) announced on Aug 5 that U.S. Health and Human Services (#HHS) Secretary Alex Azar would lead a delegation to Taiwan in the coming days.
Azar is the first HHS Secretary, the first United States cabinet member in six years, and even the highest-level of the cabinet members since 1979 to visit Taiwan.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan said Azar would meet with President Tsai Ing-wen, call on Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and Health and Welfare Secretary Chen Shih-Chung. He would also visit the Central Epidemic Command Center meeting with domestic health experts to strengthen the cooperation between Taiwan and the United States in epidemic prevention and health care.
Taiwan said that it is the second time since 2014 that the United States sends a Cabinet member to Taiwan, and the highest-level U.S. Cabinet member to visit Taiwan since 1979. "This demonstrates, with the joint efforts of Taiwan and the United States in recent years, the foundation of mutual trust between the two sides has been solid, and communication has been smooth. In the future, our government will build on the existing foundation to steadily enhance the U.S.-Taiwan global partnership and continue to defend shared values such as democracy, freedom, and human rights."
