Hong Kong Student: "The Movement Isn't Over as Long as Someone Carries On"

Part 1/3

Part 2/3

ā€œI felt like people are starting to forget, and everyone is exhaustedā€, Student Politicism convener Wong Yat-Chin said with disappointment in his voice.

It has been more than a year since the beginning of the pro-democracy Anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong, many who had fought alongside with him are gradually withdrawing. They no longer share post about the movement on their social media and many ā€œhave gone back to being political indifferent, caring only about materialistic pleasuresā€.

Wong understands that many people are frustrated by the downturn of the events, but he still hopes to ā€œremind them of their original causeā€, in order to ā€œgive hope to those who once had hopeā€ because ā€œas long as someone persists, this movement will never end.ā€

Although some said the movement is gaining less and less attention, there are always pedestrians stopping by Student Politicismā€™s street booths. Many of those also wrote down their thoughts and words.

Wong recalled a mother pointing at the word ā€œconscienceā€ on the display board and explaining it to her children; and elderly people came to wrote postcards to the 12 Hong Kong youths detained in China.

The most unforgettable incident was when the father of Liu Tsz-man, one of the pro-democracy Hongkongers who was captured by China, came to write a postcard.

ā€œAt first I was just taking it, but he grabbed my hand and pointed to the addressee which reads ā€˜From: Dadā€™ā€.

No one could forget the hollow and hopeless look in Liu's father's eyes. ā€œI really wanted to give him a hug. I asked if there is anything I can do to help. He said no in a tone of despair and walked awayā€.

7 young activists sentenced to 10 months in jail in Hong Kong after serving in Chinese prison

The #12HongKongers who intended to abscond to #Taiwan reportedly in August 2020 were arrested and detained by PRC's marine police for secretly crossing the border.

Up til July 2022, 2 of these 12 Hongkongers are still being detained in China while 9 were charged for #ObstructionofJustice when they returned to Hong Kong after serving their sentence in China.

Amonh them, Wong Wai-Yin were charged with the #CrimeofExplosives instead of Obstruction of Justice. Hoang Lam Phuc and the others have pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 10 months in jail at the District Court in Hong Kong on July 15, 2022.

Li Chi-yin, who is serving 3.5 years in prison, was added 7 months in jail.

Temporary judge Wong Hing-Wai Newman claimed that their behaviour shows their ignorance and intention to challenge to Hong Kong judicial system.

The judge describes the case as the "first in history" that the Department of Justice charges people who do not return to detention on time for Obstruction of Justice. He says it is a pity to sentence these young defendants after reading their petition letters, but "rules are rules".
