Rise, Ye Men of Valour

At ten in the evening in Hong Kong, people chanted protest slogans: from the most primitive of dilapidated shacks to the most sublime of a modest flat; from the quietest of boulevards to the most boisterous of backstreets. It played out again tonight on the streets of Mong Kok, where strangers gathered side by side, in their common cause and aim. They may have marched alongside each other during the protests; they may have grappled with the same officers on the frontlines. Though nights have passed, and days gone and went, when they hear the anthem, they still came in solidarity, as a child would to a mother’s calling.

Despite the closing clutch from tyranny, the bludgeon and the threats, we Hongkongers don’t surrender ourselves to servitude and shame, no matter how great the agony may be. We stay in readiness for our battles, for it is better to step forth squarely against formidable odds than to look upon the ashes of fellow martyrs and the suffering of our kith and kin.

In wrath, in blood, in tears and pain, our fire shall never perish.

A school in Yunnan Province force students to take "pre-prescript" Chinese cauldron medicine to “cure” the "yet to be sick"

Editorial note: The Great Leap “Forward” era of radical blind following political directions of CCP over everything else is coming back in PRC in how to tackle the coronavirus. Just because the political bureau called for integrating traditional Chinese medicine as part of the ‘curing’ option of the coronavirus has caused bureaucracy and administrative units all the way down to lower level of governments to take bizarre extreme measures by forcing students and teachers to take ‘standardised' pre-prescript Chinese medicine as a condition to get back to schools. Some of the lower level bureaucratic units go as far as pre-designated where and what to buy for ‘prevention’ of the virus.

Summary: On the first day of Chinese New Year (25 Jan), CCP Political Bureau conducted a meeting. New China News Agency reported that the Political Bureau considered it was necessary to combine Western and Chinese medication in order to ‘improve’ the treatment of diseases. On the 12 Feb, the Office of the National Health Committee and the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine jointly issued a notice requiring all public health departments and traditional Chinese medicine administration departments of lower levels of governments to place traditional Chinese medicine in more focal roles in combating the virus.

Selective silence of social elite is the biggest accomplice of tyranny

(15 Mar) Due to the Wuhan pneumonia outbreak in Hong Kong, the public has become highly aware of health and hygiene, which makes some experts the most credible group in the society. Prof. Yuen Kwok Yung, Microbiology lecturer at HKU, and Prof. Gabriel Leung, dean of medicine at HKU, are two of the most credible members in Carrie Lam’s expert team.

Portrayed as proper and professional through the lens, do they really care about the welfare of Hongkongers as portrayed? Other than seeing what they said, more importantly, we have to see what they did not do and what they deliberately avoided.

//Have they voiced out for any detainees or prisoners in the past nine months?

//Have they performed their duty as JP to speak out for social injustice?

//If they say a word of justice, it would make it to the news, it would put pressure on the regime, it would have left a remark in Hong Kong’s history, yet they chose to stay silent.

//Selective silence and inaction shows that it’s not that they don’t know politics, but in fact, they use their scientific professionalism as their halo to deceive the public’s trust. They are downright propaganda machines.

//When the public was standing up against police brutality, they chose to remain silent. When medics went on strike to protect their health, they chose to side with Carrie Lam. When journalists got attacked reporting the truth, they didn’t dare to make a noise, not a single word on police brutality.

The Hong Kong government may make use of the pretext of fighting virus to enforce Martial Law, Doctor Alfred WONG Yam Hong: tyranny and virus never relax

[Independent Media Report] Under the second wave of epidemic of Wuhan Coronavirus, professions warned that the Hong Kong medical system may collapse in a week’s time. Spokesman of the Citizens’ Press Conference worries the government will introduce Martial Law to suppress the anti-tyranny movement, by virtue of the justification for fighting virus, and in fact it is a good pretext to be used. Doctor Alfred WONG Yam Hong, physician of Tuen Mun Hospital and member of Médecins Inspirés, appeals Hong Kong people to minimize staying outdoor and uphold personal hygiene to avoid intensifying the epidemic. “Tyranny and virus have never relaxed, not even a single moment”, said Doctor WONG.

//Hong Kong people need to do their best to fight against the epidemic to avoid community outbreak, otherwise the government will make use of this to impose the Martial Law – this will definitely be an endless trouble.”

//“all my hopes are on Hong Kong people, but not any on the government.”

//Under the current trend, the number of confirmed cases would hit 1,000 in 5 days, substantially overloading the negative pressure wards.

Understanding Hong Kong's chaos in 800 words

(4 May) Hong Kong's chaos is caused by its eventual grafting onto China's authoritarian soil two decades after the transfer of sovereignty.

Hong Kong was intended to have been ruled directly by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Before Britain pulled out, however, it unexpectedly drove a wedge in the plan with the Sino-British Joint Declaration. From that, the Basic Law was derived. China was left stuck with a shell. At the time, there was no way to absorb Hong Kong into the CCP's regime.

//Hong Kong's chaos is nothing more than China's process of transforming it from the originally promised "two systems" into "one country". China kept saying it was an "acclimatisation period" but actually meant it to be the digestion of Hongkongers' so-called elitism. Even the so-called immature democracy in Hong Kong politics is to be digested away, step by step.

//"How is this good for China? China needs to keep Hong Kong as an international gateway for foreign exchange."... The mindset of communist-ruled China is very different from the common wisdom of the West, however.

The time of "One Country, two system" is dead!

Despite a short-lived protest from the democrats, Pro-Beijing camp's favourite Starry Lee of the DAB party has been elected House Committee Chairperson of the Legislative Council, winning an overwhelming majority of the votes. It is evident that the local legislation and even elections within the legislature have been interfered with by the central government in #Beijing , which keeps ignoring its part of commitment stipulated in the Sino-British Joint Declaration. It is yet another sign of the demise of ‘One Country, Two Systems’.

Chinese officials have announced plans to impose sweeping new controversial laws on Hong Kong after last year's pro-democracy unrest, the implications of which activists say could be "deadly dangerous" and a "knockout blow" to the "one country, two systems" principle.

The controversial National Security Law would ban secession, foreign interference, terrorism and all seditious activities aimed at toppling the central government and any external interference in the former British colony. The Chinese government thinks that it could silence Hongkongers’ voices by force and fear, yet it does trigger their anger to a greater extent. Also, it thinks that Hong Kong could bring them lucrative economic benefits and could be easily controlled as mainland.

However, it doesn't understand that the real causes of Hong Kong's success are Hongkongers' diligence and creativity, the Laissez-Faire policy, and the rule of law. There is close economic relation between Hong Kong and other countries due to its stable economy and successful judiciary system. Thus, international companies trust that Hong Kong is a reliable place to be invested in.

In fact, mainland China used Hong Kong as a springboard to connect the world in the past. However, China's interference with Hong Kong's local affairs has caused Hong Kong economic growth dropped sharply, as such global companies have been starting to quit the market of Hong Kong since the city’s #freedom and high degree of #autonomy are being eroded.

Although Hongkongers are facing creeping meddling brought from authoritarianism, Hongkongers will not give up. It is because Hongkongers receive supports from all over the world and they know that they are not left behind.

“I don’t know what it is, because nobody knows yet. If it happens, we’ll address that issue very strongly”, said Donald Trump. “We demand the Canadian government and the international community to immediately revoke Hong Kong’s special administrative status. We must consider Hong Kong’s democratic future outside of the confines of the One-China fantasy”, Alliance Canada Hong Kong states.

Therefore, we Hongkongers are not afraid of the #tyranny. We keep fighting against the unfair system and fighting for what we deserved -freedom. The resilience of #Hongkongers shall not be underestimated because we are water. We shall not stop our protests and revolution - not until we win.

"We shall defend our island. Whatever the cost maybe. We shall fight on the beaches. We shall fight on the landing grounds. We shall fight in the fields and in the streets. We shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender."
--- Winston S. Churchill, June 4, 1940.

China lost patience over Hong Kong

The central government is exploiting the right of Hong Kongers at an alarming rate, interferencing local legislation and “the high degree of autonomy”. Chinese officials have announced plans to impose controversial laws in Hong Kong, the implications of which activists say could be "deadly dangerous" and a "knockout blow" for Hong Kong's one country, two systems deal with China.

Hong Kong’s autonomy was guaranteed under the “one country, two systems” principle enshrined in the 1984 Sino-British joint declaration. Yet, 186 law and policy leaders from UK said the proposed laws are a “comprehensive assault on the city’s autonomy, rule of law and fundamental freedoms” and “flagrant breach” of the Sino-British Joint Declaration. Despite being blamed for the pandemic, China is using the coronavirus crisis as a distraction to push through its geopolitical aims. The international community should not trust Beijing to keep its word when it comes to Hong Kong, people will be reluctant to take its word on other matters. The only hope of Hong Kongers might be from international helps, especially, Britain's.
Chris Patten, the last governor of the former British colony, mentioned China has betrayed the people of Hong Kong, and the UK has a moral, economic and legal duty to stand up for them. He also suggested Hong Kong residents with British national (overseas) passports (BNO) should be allowed to settle in the UK. The number of applications of #BNO has increased sharply since 2019. Hong Kongers have no faith in the #tyranny government.

Boris Johnson’s spokesman said on Friday that the prime minister and his government were monitoring the situation, and that as a party to the joint declaration the #UK was committed to the upholding Hong Kong’s #autonomy and respecting the one country, two systems model. And that could be the only hope for Hong Kongers to shirk the authoritarianism. Yet, even #immigration can help some of the Hong Kongers, the root cause has not been solved. As a Hong Konger, I wish that Britain could take a part in our situation as what Chris Patten mentioned and willing to give a hand to us.

Battle against tyranny: High Court judge Patrick Li barred from Anti-ELAB related hearings after signing Anti-Extradition petition

(28 May) On the eve of the 9 June demonstrations last year, High Court judge Patrick Li, who presides over the Court of First Instance, signed a joint press statement alongside more than three thousand alumni from the University of Hong Kong entitled, "We oppose deceitful policies, withdraw the Extradition Bill." The Judiciary later acknowledged that a judge was involved in the petition. Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma discussed the matter with the said judge, reminding him to refrain from letting similar issues to occur in the future. Today [28 May], Sing Tao Daily quoted the Judiciary that based on the Guide to Judicial Conduct, Li was to avoid handling cases that related to the petition's subject matter to prevent "apparent bias" from arising. This means he is barred from handling cases on Anti-ELAB [Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill].

According to the report, the Judiciary responded by quoting paragraphs 46 and 47 of the Guide to Judicial Conduct: "In practice, questions of disqualification are most likely to arise in relation to suggestions of the apparent bias", and "The apparent bias test may be stated as follows: A particular judge is disqualified from sitting if the circumstances are such as would lead a reasonable, fair-minded and well-informed observer to conclude that there is a real possibility that the judge would be biased." The above principles apply to scheduling cases at all levels of court. The Judiciary decided that when assigning cases for the Court of First Instance judge Patrick Li, he would not sit in cases related to the joint statement to avoid apparent bias.

On 1 Oct last year, Li handled the case of local actor Gregory Wong concerning the 1 July Legislative Council incident. Wong was detained by the police for approximately 36 hours. Li granted a writ of habeas corpus after trial and Wong was released at 7:50 pm on the same day.

Last month, District Judge Kwok Wai-kin's handling of the Lennon Wall attack case in Tseung Kwan O provoked controversy over his verdict where he praised the defendant's "noble virtue". Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma subsequently issued a statement that inappropriate or unnecessary expressions of political opinions by judges and judicial officers could harm their impartiality and credibility. He determined that Kwok should not sit in any cases surrounding such political issues for the time being. Currently, two judges in charge of criminal cases - Patrick Li and Kwok Wai-kin - are barred from hearings that involve Anti-ELAB due to personal conduct or remarks made in trial.

Feeling Inspired on the night of 4 June, 2020 in Hong Kong

Image:
https://t.me/guardiansofhongkong/22729

(4 Jun) Today, Fellow saw a bunch of posts condemning the hypocrisy of Hong Kong celebrities by showing their old photos, especially those in The Concert for Democracy in China, as well as when people like Leung Chun-ying (Third Chief Executive of Hong Kong) and Priscilla Leung Mei-fun (Hong Kong barrister and legislative conciliator) supported the Tiananmen Square protests in 4 June 1989 and condemning Chinese Communist Party.

Maybe we’ll consider them disgraceful and laughable, but when we think about it, on the path of a revolution, both you and me are bound to be tempted by the enemy at all times.

Recently, Fellow rewatched the Sci-fi movie, The Matrix, which was a favourite during my school days. The most classic scene in the movie is one where the protagonist Neo (Keanu Reeves) had to choose between the “Red Pill” or “Blue Pill”, aka “to awake” or “to indulge”.

1. Choosing the “Blue Pill”—to be comfortable with the status quo
Stay in the past, where truth and justice are not the purposes of life; As long as life is good and stable, everything else can be ignored, and it does not matter even if life is virtual.

2. Choosing the “Red Pill”—to pursue the truth

Leave the comfort zone to face the unacceptable truth, and live a life that others may not understand, and even have his own safety threatened.

In the movie, Neo chose the Red Pill. He woke up to see himself (and all of mankind) always being the slaves to the Matrix, where the past was just a virtual dream created to cultivate humanity as a source of energy. Afterwards, Neo embarked on a harrowing adventure to defy the Matrix while being hunted. Indeed, one year ago, many Hongkongers chose the Red Pill to protest, few million people once took to the street against the demonic Extradition Bill. But we can reverse our original choice at any time.

In the movie, there’s an antagonist called Cypher, who had the Red Pill before Neo and joined the Anti-Matrix revolutionary army. But as time went on, Cypher started to get tired of being in the real world, even more so of having to eat monotonous food that tasted bad every day. Thus, seduced by the Matrix, he decided to betray his comrades in arms and told Agent Smith (the lobbyist the Matrix sent to seduce him), “You know, I know this steak doesn't exist. I know that when I put it in my mouth, it's the Matrix telling my brain that it is juicy and delicious. After nine years, you know what I realize? Ignorance is bliss. I don't want to remember nothing. NOTHING! You understand? (Give me the Blue Pill again) And I wanna be rich. You know, someone important, like an actor.” The Matrix answered his demands on the condition that he kills the other anti-Matrix revolutionaries.

Of course, in the end, Cypher's devious plan failed and he became one of the most hated characters in the movie.
In reality, 31 years ago there were 1.5 million Hongkongers who took to the street for democracy; But today, how many of them have become useless elderly and blue ribbon (pro-government people)? From going against the CCP to flattering it? Every one of them has taken the Blue Pill like Cypher.

After one year of protest, have you become numb and jaded (about the sadness and unfairness in our daily life)? Will you choose to go back to the false life and continue with the status quo? I hope today's portrait of the hypocrites will serve as a reminder for us in the future.

I also declares once again that as long as tyranny is not extinguished, we will continue to fight even if it is our last breath.

Never jaded, never forget.
